Li₂ZnTi₃O₈/graphene nanocomposite as a high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT: An Li₂ZnTi₃O₈/graphene (LZTO/G) anode is successfully synthesized by a two-step reaction. The results show that LZTO particles can be well dispersed into the graphene conductive network. The conductive structure greatly improves the electrochemical performance of LZTO/G. When cycled for 400 cycles, 76.4% of the capacity for the 2nd cycle is maintained at 1 A g^-1. Also, 174.8 and 156.5 mA h g^-1 are still delivered at the 100th cycle for 5 and 6 A g^-1, respectively. The excellent cyclic performance and the large specific capacities at high current densities are due to the good conductive network of the LZTO active particles, large pore volume, small particle size, low charge-transfer resistance and high lithium diffusion coefficient.

A novel graphene-polysulfide anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:We report a simple and efficient approach for fabrication of novel graphene-polysulfide (GPS) anode materials, which consists of conducting graphene network and homogeneously distributed polysulfide in between and chemically bonded with graphene sheets. Such unique architecture not only possesses fast electron transport channels, shortens the Li-ion diffusion length but also provides very efficient Li-ion reservoirs. As a consequence, the GPS materials exhibit an ultrahigh reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and superior long-term cycling performance in terms of 1600, 550, 380 mAh g(-1) after 500, 1300, 1900 cycles with a rate of 1, 5 and 10 A g(-1) respectively. This novel and simple strategy is believed to work broadly for other carbon-based materials. Additionally, the competitive cost and low environment impact may promise such materials and technique a promising future for the development of high-performance energy storage devices for diverse applications.

First-principles calculations of an asymmetric MoO2/graphene nanocomposite as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Previous work on the synthesis and preparation of MoO2/graphene nanocomposites (MoO2/G) indicates that MoO2/G is a good anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBS). In this work, we used larger super-cells than those used previously to theoretically construct an asymmetric MoO2/G nanocomposite with smaller lattice mismatch. We then calculated the structural, electronic and Li atom diffusion properties of MoO2/G using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The results show that asymmetric MoO2/G has metallic properties, good stability and a low Li atom diffusion barrier because of the charge transfer induced by van der Waals interactions. The Li diffusion barriers in the interlayer of MoO2/G are in the range of 0.02-0.29 eV, depending on the relative positions of the Li atom and the MoO2 and the C atoms in the graphene layer. The Li diffusion barriers on the outside layers of the MoO2/G nanocomposite are smaller than those of its pristine materials (MoO2 and graphene). These results are consistent with experimental results. The adsorption of Li atoms in the interlayer of the nanocomposite further promotes the adsorption of Li atoms on the outside sites of the MoO2 layer. Hence, the specific capacity of the MoO2/G nanocomposite is larger than 1682 mA h g-1. These properties all indicate that MoO2/G is a good anode material for LIBS.

Electrospun Carbon/Cu x O Nanocomposite material as Sustainable and High Performance Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The increase in energy density of the next generation of battery materials to meet the new challenges of the electrical vehicles era calls for innovative and easily scalable materials with sustainable processes. An innovative Cu x O/C nanocomposite material, characterized by a highly conductive 3D-framework, with Cu x O/Cu-metal contiguous nanodomains is prepared by electrospinning. The electrode processing is made using a polyacrylic acid binder. The nanocomposite has been fully characterized and the electrochemical performance shows high specific capacity values over 450 galvanostatic cycles at 500 mAg-1 specific current with capacity retention values over 80 %. In addition, the composite shows remarkable high rate performance and highly stable interface, which has been studied by impedance spectroscopy.

TiO2 nanotubes wrapped with reduced graphene oxide as a high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Through electrostatic interaction and high-temperature reduction methods, rGO was closely coated onto the surface of TiO2 nanotubes. Even at a high temperature of 700 °C, the nanotube morphology of TiO2 (anatase) was preserved because of the assistance of rGO, which provides a framework that prevents the tubes from breaking into particles and undergoing a phase transformation. The rGO/TiO2 nanotubes deliver a high capacity (263 mAh g-1 at the end of 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1), excellent rate performance (151 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 and 102 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1), and good cycle stability (206 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g-1). These characteristics arise from the GO/TiO2 nanotubes' advanced structure. First, the closely coated rGO and Ti3+ in the tubes give rise to a high electro-conductivity of the nanotubes. Additionally, the Li+ ions can rapidly transfer into the electrode via the nanotubes' empty inner diameter and short tube wall.

A stable TiO2-graphene nanocomposite anode with high rate capability for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:A rapid microwave hydrothermal process is adopted for the synthesis of titanium dioxide and reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites as high-performance anode materials for Li-ion batteries. With the assistance of hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent, graphene oxide was reduced while TiO2 nanoparticles were grown in situ on the nanosheets to obtain the nanocomposite material. The morphology of the nanocomposite obtained consisted of TiO2 particles with a size of ∼100 nm, uniformly distributed on the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets. The as-prepared TiO2-graphene nanocomposite was able to deliver a capacity of 250 mA h g-1 ± 5% at 0.2C for more than 200 cycles with remarkably stable cycle life during the Li+ insertion/extraction process. In terms of high rate capability performance, the nanocomposite delivered discharge capacity of ca. 100 mA h g-1 with >99% coulombic efficiency at C-rates of up to 20C. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the material in terms of high rate capability and cycling stability indicates that the as-developed TiO2-rGO nanocomposites are promising electrode materials for future Li-ion batteries.

Lithium aluminum hydride Li3AlH6: new insight into the anode material for liquid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Metal hydrides have been demonstrated as one of the promising high-capacity anode materials for Li-ion batteries. Herein, we report the electrochemical properties and lithium storage mechanism of a Li-rich complex metal hydride (Li3AlH6). Li3AlH6 exhibits a lithiation capacity of ∼1729 mAh/g with a plateau potential of ∼0.33 V vs. Li+/Li at the first discharge cycle. Experimental results demonstrate that Li3AlH6 is converted into LiH and LiAl in the initial electrochemical lithiation process. In addition, Li3AlH6 also possesses a good cycling stability that 71 % of the second discharge capacity is retained after 20 cycles. More importantly, the cycling performance of Li3AlH6 can be improved to 100 cycles via adjusting electrolyte composition. This study provides a new approach for developing the lithium storage properties of anode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Three-dimensional thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole-based molecules/graphene aerogel as high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Herein, 3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (TDPP) and di-tert-butyl 2,2'-(1,4-dioxo-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-2,5(1H,4H)-diyl)diacetate (TDPPA) were synthesized, which were then loaded in graphene aerogels. The as-prepared thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole-based molecules/reduced graphene oxide composites for lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode composites consist of DPPs nanorods on a graphene network. In relation to the DPPs part, embedding DPPs nanorods into graphene aerogels can effectively reduce the dissolution of DPPs in the electrolyte. It can serve to prevent electrode rupture and improve electron transport and lithium-ion diffusion rate, by partially connecting DPPs nanorods through graphene. The composite not only has a high reversible capacity, but also shows excellent cycling stability and performance, due to the densely distributed graphene nanosheets forming a three-dimensional conductive network. The TDPP60 electrode exhibits high reversible capacity and excellent performance, showing an initial discharge capacity of 835 mA h g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1. Even at a current density of 1000 mA g-1, after 500 cycles, it still demonstrates a discharge capacity of 303 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 80.7%.

Self-Supported Fibrous Sn/SnO2@C Nanocomposite as Superior Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Low-cost and simple methods are constantly chased in order to produce less expensive lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) while possibly increasing the energy and power density as well as the volumetric capacity in order to boost a rapid decarbonization of the transport sector. Li alloys and tin-carbon composites are promising candidates as anode materials for LIBs both in terms of capacity and cycle life. In the present paper, electrospinning was employed in the preparation of Sn/SnOx@C composites, where tin and tin oxides were homogeneously dispersed in a carbonaceous matrix of carbon nanofibers. The resulting self-standing and light electrode showed a greatly enhanced performance compared to a conventional electrode based on the same starting materials that are simply mixed to obtain a slurry then deposited on a Cu foil. Fast kinetics were achieved with more than 90% of the reaction that resulted being surface-controlled, and stable capacities of about 300 mAh/g over 500 cycles were obtained at a current density of 0.5 A/g.

A 2D hybrid nanocomposite: a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries at high temperature.

Project description:Two-dimensional atomically thick materials including graphene, BN, and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have been investigated as possible energy storage materials, because of their large specific surface area, potential redox activity, and mechanical stability. Unfortunately, these materials cannot reach their full potential due to their low electrical conductivity and layered structural restacking. These problems have been somewhat resolved in the past by composite electrodes composed of a graphene and MoS2 mixture; however, insufficient mixing at the nanoscale still limits performance. Here, we examined lithium-ion battery electrodes and reported three composites made using a basic ball milling technique and sonication method. The 5% BN-G@MoS2-50@50 composite obtained has a homogeneous distribution of MoS2 on the graphene sheet and H-BN with high crystallinity. Compared to the other two composites (5% BN-G@MoS2-10@90 and 5% BN-G@MoS2-90@10), the 5% BN-G@MoS2-50@50 composite electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 765 mA h g-1 and a current density of 100 mA g-1 in batteries. Additionally, the 5% BN-G@MoS2-50@50 composite electrode displays an excellent rate capability (453 mA h g-1 at a current density of 1000 mA g-1) at a high temperature of 70 °C, thanks to h-BN that allows reliable and safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. Our research may pave the way for the sensible design of different anode materials, including 2D materials (5% BN-G@MoS2-50@50) for high-performance LIBs and other energy-related fields.

Preparation of Advanced CuO Nanowires/Functionalized Graphene Composite Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:The copper oxide (CuO) nanowires/functionalized graphene (f-graphene) composite material was successfully composed by a one-pot synthesis method. The f-graphene synthesized through the Birch reduction chemistry method was modified with functional group "-(CH₂)₅COOH", and the CuO nanowires (NWs) were well dispersed in the f-graphene sheets. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the composite exhibited good cyclic stability and decent specific capacity of 677 mA·h·g-1 after 50 cycles. CuO NWs can enhance the lithium-ion storage of the composites while the f-graphene effectively resists the volume expansion of the CuO NWs during the galvanostatic charge/discharge cyclic process, and provide a conductive paths for charge transportation. The good electrochemical performance of the synthesized CuO/f-graphene composite suggests great potential of the composite materials for lithium-ion batteries anodes.
