Growth and properties of ZnO nanorods by RF-sputtering for detection of toxic gases.

ABSTRACT: There is a strong demand for nanostructured materials prepared by an industrially-scalable technique. The current work is devoted to the preparation of ZnO polycrystalline nanorods using RF sputtering at 400 °C and Sn droplets as a catalyzer layer, for highly sensitive gas sensors. Nanorods with diameters ranging from 100 to 200 nm can be tailored by changing the RF power and the deposition time. Raman and PL spectroscopy indicate that the material obtained is ZnO, with a characteristic emission spectrum in the UV region and in the visible. The functional properties of the ZnO nanorods were investigated by studying the response to CBRN (acetonitrile and DMMP), explosive (H₂), and pollutant gases (H₂S, acetone, and NO₂) in the temperature range 200-500 °C. The sensors showed good response to reducing gases at higher temperatures (500 °C) and to NO₂ at lower temperature (200 °C).

Optimization of ZnO Nanorods Growth on Polyetheresulfone Electrospun Mats to Promote Antibacterial Properties.

Project description:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods grown by chemical bath deposition (CBD) on the surface of polyetheresulfone (PES) electrospun fibers confer antimicrobial properties to the obtained hybrid inorganic-polymeric PES/ZnO mats. In particular, a decrement of bacteria colony forming units (CFU) is observed for both negative (Escherichia coli) and positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) Grams. Since antimicrobial action is strictly related to the quantity of ZnO present on surface, a CBD process optimization is performed to achieve the best results in terms of coverage uniformity and reproducibility. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provide morphological and compositional analysis of PES/ZnO mats while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is useful to assess the best process conditions to guarantee the higher amount of ZnO with respect to PES scaffold. Biocidal action is associated to Zn2+ ion leaching in solution, easily indicated by UV-Vis measurement of metallation of free porphyrin layers deposited on glass.

Development of a High-Resolution Acoustic Sensor Based on ZnO Film Deposited by the RF Magnetron Sputtering Method.

Project description:In the study, an acoustic sensor for a high-resolution acoustic microscope was fabricated using zinc oxide (ZnO) piezoelectric ceramics. The c-cut sapphire was processed into a lens shape to deposit a ZnO film using radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering, and an upper and a lower electrode were deposited using E-beam evaporation. The electrode was a Au thin film, and a Ti thin film was used as an adhesion layer. The surface microstructure of the ZnO film was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thickness of the film was measured using a focused ion beam (FIB) for piezoelectric ceramics deposited on the sapphire wafer, and the thickness of ZnO was measured to be 4.87 μm. As a result of analyzing the crystal growth plane using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, it was confirmed that the piezoelectric characteristics were grown to the (0002) plane. The sensor fabricated in this study had a center frequency of 352 MHz. The bandwidth indicates the range of upper (375 MHz) and lower (328 MHz) frequencies at the -6 dB level of the center frequency. As a result of image analysis using the resolution chart, the resolution was about 1 μm.

An optoelectronic nose for the detection of toxic gases.

Project description:We have developed a simple colorimetric sensor array that detects a wide range of volatile analytes and then applied it to the detection of toxic gases. The sensor consists of a disposable array of cross-responsive nanoporous pigments with colours that are changed by diverse chemical interactions with analytes. Although no single chemically responsive pigment is specific for any one analyte, the pattern of colour change for the array is a unique molecular fingerprint. Clear differentiation among 19 different toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) within two minutes of exposure at concentrations immediately dangerous to life or health were demonstrated. Based on the colour change of the array, quantification of each analyte was accomplished easily, and excellent detection limits were achieved, generally below the permissible exposure limits. Different TICs were identified readily using a standard chemometric approach (hierarchical clustering analysis), with no misclassifications over 140 trials.

UV-Enhanced Ethanol Sensing Properties of RF Magnetron-Sputtered ZnO Film.

Project description:ZnO film was deposited by the magnetron sputtering method. The thickness of ZnO film is approximately 2 μm. The influence of UV light illumination on C₂H₅OH sensing properties of ZnO film was investigated. Gas sensing results revealed that the UV-illuminated ZnO film displays excellent C₂H₅OH characteristics in terms of high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, rapid response/recovery, and low detection limit down to 0.1 ppm. The excellent sensing performance of the sensor with UV activation could be attributed to the photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol on the surface of the ZnO film, the planar film structure with high utilizing efficiency of UV light, high electron mobility, and a good surface/volume ratio of of ZnO film with a relatively rough and porous surface.

Metal Oxide Nanorods-Based Sensor Array for Selective Detection of Biomarker Gases.

Project description:The breath gas analysis through gas phase chemical analysis draws attention in terms of non-invasive and real time monitoring. The array-type sensors are one of the diagnostic methods with high sensitivity and selectivity towards the target gases. Herein, we presented a 2 × 4 sensor array with a micro-heater and ceramic chip. The device is designed in a small size for portability, including the internal eight-channel sensor array. In2O3 NRs and WO3 NRs manufactured through the E-beam evaporator's glancing angle method were used as sensing materials. Pt, Pd, and Au metal catalysts were decorated for each channel to enhance functionality. The sensor array was measured for the exhaled gas biomarkers CH3COCH3, NO2, and H2S to confirm the respiratory diagnostic performance. Through this operation, the theoretical detection limit was calculated as 1.48 ppb for CH3COCH3, 1.9 ppt for NO2, and 2.47 ppb for H2S. This excellent detection performance indicates that our sensor array detected the CH3COCH3, NO2, and H2S as biomarkers, applying to the breath gas analysis. Our results showed the high potential of the gas sensor array as a non-invasive diagnostic tool that enables real-time monitoring.

Optical properties and carrier dynamics in Co-doped ZnO nanorods.

Project description:The controlled modification of the electronic properties of ZnO nanorods via transition metal doping is reported. A series of ZnO nanorods were synthesized by chemical bath growth with varying Co content from 0 to 20 atomic% in the growth solution. Optoelectronic behavior was probed using cathodoluminescence, time-resolved luminescence, transient absorbance spectroscopy, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE). Analysis indicates the crucial role of surface defects in determining the electronic behavior. Significantly, Co-doping extends the light absorption of the nanorods into the visible region, increases the surface defects, and shortens the non-radiative lifetimes, while leaving the radiative lifetime constant. Furthermore, for 1 atomic% Co-doping the IPCE of the ZnO nanorods is enhanced. These results demonstrate that doping can controllably tune the functional electronic properties of ZnO nanorods for applications.

Impact of Ar Flow Rates on Micro-Structural Properties of WS2 Thin Film by RF Magnetron Sputtering.

Project description:Tungsten disulfide (WS2) thin films were deposited on soda-lime glass (SLG) substrates using radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering at different Ar flow rates (3 to 7 sccm). The effect of Ar flow rates on the structural, morphology, and electrical properties of the WS2 thin films was investigated thoroughly. Structural analysis exhibited that all the as-grown films showed the highest peak at (101) plane corresponds to rhombohedral phase. The crystalline size of the film ranged from 11.2 to 35.6 nm, while dislocation density ranged from 7.8 × 1014 to 26.29 × 1015 lines/m2. All these findings indicate that as-grown WS2 films are induced with various degrees of defects, which were visible in the FESEM images. FESEM images also identified the distorted crystallographic structure for all the films except the film deposited at 5 sccm of Ar gas flow rate. EDX analysis found that all the films were having a sulfur deficit and suggested that WS2 thin film bears edge defects in its structure. Further, electrical analysis confirms that tailoring of structural defects in WS2 thin film can be possible by the varying Ar gas flow rates. All these findings articulate that Ar gas flow rate is one of the important process parameters in RF magnetron sputtering that could affect the morphology, electrical properties, and structural properties of WS2 thin film. Finally, the simulation study validates the experimental results and encourages the use of WS2 as a buffer layer of CdTe-based solar cells.

Observation of CO Detection Using Aluminum-Doped ZnO Nanorods on Microcantilever.

Project description:An oscillating piezoresistive microcantilever (MC) coated with an aluminum (Al)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods was used to detect carbon monoxide (CO) in air at room temperature. Al-doped ZnO nanorods were grown on the MC surface using the hydrothermal method, and a response to CO gas was observed by measuring a resonant frequency shift of vibrated MC. CO gas response showed a significant increase in resonant frequency, where sensitivity in the order of picogram amounts was obtained. An increase in resonant frequency was also observed with increasing gas flow rate, which was simultaneously followed by a decrease in relative humidity, indicating that the molecular interface between ZnO and H2O plays a key role in CO absorption. The detection of other gases of carbon compounds such as CO2 and CH4 was also performed; the sensitivity of CO was found to be higher than those gases. The results demonstrate the reversibility and reproducibility of the proposed technique, opening up future developments of highly sensitive CO-gas detectors with a fast response and room temperature operation.

Synergistic effect of Indium and Gallium co-doping on growth behavior and physical properties of hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorods.

Project description:We synthesized ZnO nanorods (NRs) using simple hydrothermal method, with the simultaneous incorporation of gallium (Ga) and indium (In), in addition, investigated the co-doping effect on the morphology, microstructure, electronic structure, and electrical/optical properties. The growth behavior of the doped NRs was affected by the nuclei density and polarity of the (001) plane. The c-axis parameter of the co-doped NRs was similar to that of undoped NRs due to the compensated lattice distortion caused by the presence of dopants that are both larger (In3+) and smaller (Ga3+) than the host Zn2+ cations. Red shifts in the ultraviolet emission peaks were observed in all doped NRs, owing to the combined effects of NR size, band gap renormalization, and the presence of stacking faults created by the dopant-induced lattice distortions. In addition, the NR/p-GaN diodes using co-doped NRs exhibited superior electrical conductivity compared to the other specimens due to the increase in the charge carrier density of NRs and the relatively large effective contact area of (001) planes. The simultaneous doping of In and Ga is therefore anticipated to provide a broader range of optical, physical, and electrical properties of ZnO NRs for a variety of opto-electronic applications.
