Adsorption of methylene blue and tetracycline onto biomass-based material prepared by sulfuric acid reflux.

ABSTRACT: The adsorptive removal of environmental pollutants is an effective method for the treatment of contaminated water. Thus, the preparation of adsorbents from low-cost, readily available, and renewable resources has garnered immense attention in recent years. In this study, a facile one-step method for the preparation of a high-capacity adsorbent is demonstrated by refluxing pine cones in concentrated sulfuric acid. With sulfuric acid reflux, the pine cones undergone carbonization as well as functionalization with sulfonic acid groups. The adsorbent demonstrated high adsorption capacity for two emerging organic pollutants, methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC). Different variables such as pH, temperature, contact time, and initial concentration of the pollutants were analyzed and showed that the adsorption capacity for MB increased in a basic pH and vice versa for TC. Also, the elevated temperature favored the adsorption for both MB and TC. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 1666.66, and 357.14 mg g^-1 for MB and TC, respectively. In comparison to the pristine pine cone, the sulfuric acid treated pine cone demonstrated an extraordinary improvement in the adsorption capacity. The adsorption of MB and TC was performed from the tap water matrix and similar adsorption capacities were found. A packed glass column was also prepared to demonstrate the adsorption of MB from tap water under flow conditions.

Project description:The production of cobalt oxide nanoparticles and their use in the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from solution is described in the paper. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the synthesized cobalt oxide nanoparticles have a crystalline cubic structure. The study of the adsorption of methylene blue onto the cobalt oxide nanoparticles involved determining the contact time and initial concentration of the adsorption of MB on the adsorbent. The kinetics of adsorption were analyzed using two kinetic models (pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order), and the pseudo-second-order model was found to be the most appropriate for describing the behavior of the adsorption. This study indicates that the MLTS (monolayer with the same number of molecules per site) model is the most suitable model for describing methylene blue/cobalt oxide systems, and the parameter values help to further understand the adsorption process with the steric parameters. Indicating that methylene blue is horizontally adsorbed onto the surface of the cobalt oxide, which is bonded to two different receptor sites. Regarding the temperature effect, it was found that the adsorption capacity increased, with the experimental value ranging from 313.7 to 405.3 mg g-1, while the MLTS predicted 313.32 and 408.16 mg g-1. From the thermodynamic functions, high entropy was found around 280 mg L-1 concentration. For all concentrations and temperatures examined, the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy of adsorption were found to be negative and positive, respectively, suggesting that the system is spontaneous and endothermic. According to this study's findings, methylene blue adsorption onto cobalt oxide nanoparticles happens via the creation of a monolayer, in which the same amount of molecules are adsorbed at two distinct locations. The findings shed light on the methylene blue adsorption process onto cobalt oxide nanoparticles, which have a variety of uses, including the remediation of wastewater.

Project description:Environment-friendly composite hydrogel beads based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), alginate (Alg) and graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized by an ionotropic gelation technique and studied as an efficient adsorbent for methylene blue (MB). The chemical structure and surface morphology of the prepared hydrogel beads were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and point of zero charge (pHpzc). A hybrid response surface methodology integrated Box-Behnken design (RSM-BBD) was successfully developed to model, simulate, and optimize the biosorption process. The synergistic effects between three critical independent variables including adsorbent dose (0.3-0.7 g), pH of the MB solution (6.5-9.5) and initial MB concentration (15-45 mg L-1) on the MB adsorption capacity (mg g-1) and removal efficiency (%) were statistically studied and optimized. The performance of the RSM-BBD method was found to be very impressive and efficient. Results proved that the adsorption process follows a polynomial quadratic model since high regression parameters were obtained (R 2-value = 99.8% and adjusted R 2-value = 99.3%). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) further confirms the validity of the suggested model. The optimal conditions for 96.22 ± 2.96% MB removal were predicted to be 0.6 g of CMC-Alg/GO hydrogel beads, MB concentration of 15 mg L-1 and pH of 9.5 within 120 min. The adsorption equilibrium is better described by the Freundlich isotherm, indicating that physisorption is the rate controlling mechanism. The MB adsorption process was thermodynamically spontaneous and endothermic. A reusability study revealed that the prepared adsorbent is readily reusable. The adsorbent still maintains its ability to adsorb MB for up to four cycles. Results reported in this study demonstrated that CMC-Alg/GO hydrogel beads are an effective, promising and recyclable adsorbent for the removal of MB from aqueous solutions.
