Porous sorbents for the capture of radioactive iodine compounds: a review.

ABSTRACT: The number of studies on the capture of radioactive iodine compounds by porous sorbents has regained major importance in the last few years. In fact, nuclear energy is facing major issues related to operational safety and the treatment and safe disposal of generated radioactive waste. In particular during nuclear accidents, such as that in 2011 at Fukushima, gaseous radionuclides have been released in the off-gas stream. Among these, radionuclides that are highly volatile and harmful to health such as long-lived ¹²⁹I, short-lived ¹³¹I and organic compounds such as methyl iodide (CH₃I) have been released. Immediate and effective means of capturing and storing these radionuclides are needed. In the present review, we focus on porous sorbents for the capture and storage of radioactive iodine compounds. Concerns with, and limitations of, the existing sorbents with respect to operating conditions and their capacities for iodine capture are discussed and compared.

Iodine Capture with Mechanically Robust Heat-Treated Ag-Al-Si-O Xerogel Sorbents.

Project description:Various radionuclides are released as gases during reprocessing of used nuclear fuel or during nuclear accidents including iodine-129 (129I) and iodine-131 (131I). These isotopes are of particular concern to the environment and human health as they are environmentally mobile and can cause thyroid cancer. In this work, silver-loaded heat-treated aluminosilicate xerogels (Ag-HTX) were evaluated as sorbents for iodine [I2(g)] capture. After synthesis of the base NaAlSiO4 xerogel, a heat-treatment step was performed to help increase the mechanical integrity of the NaAlSiO4 gels (Na-HTX) prior to Ag-exchanging to create Ag-HTX xerogels. Samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, gravimetric iodine loading, nanoindentation, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The structural and chemical analyses of Ag-HTX showed uniform distribution of Ag throughout the gel network after Ag-exchange. After I2(g) capture, the AgI crystallites were observed in the sorbent, verifying chemisorption as the primary iodine capture mechanism. Iodine loading of this xerogel was 0.43 g g-1 at 150 °C over 1 day and 0.52 g g-1 at 22 °C over 33 days. The specific surface area of Ag-HTX was 202 m2 g-1 and decreased to 87 m2 g-1 after iodine loading. The hardness of the Na-HTX was >145 times higher than that of the heat-treated aerogel of the same starting composition. The heat-treatment process increased Young's modulus (compressive) value to 40.8 MPa from 7.0 MPa of as-made xerogel, demonstrating the need for this added step in the sample preparation process. These results show that Ag-HTX is a promising sorbent for I2(g) capture with good iodine loading capacity and mechanical stability.

Porous ZIF-8@polyacrylonitrile composite beads for iodine capture.

Project description:The safe and effective capture and storage of iodine from nuclear waste is of great significance in industry. This article reports the preparation of a series of millimeter-sized ZIF-8@polyacrylonitrile composite beads with high specific surface area and porosity by the phase inversion method for iodine capture. The composite beads showed a higher capture capacity (4150 mg g-1) under excess iodine vapor. The amount of iodine adsorbed in the organic solution is also as high as 643 mg g-1, and the adsorption conforms to the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, composite beads also exhibit higher thermal stability (310 °C). Therefore, ZIF-8@polyacrylonitrile composite beads show great potential as a material for capturing and temporarily storing radioactive iodine.

Porous pillar[6]arene-based polymers for reversible iodine capture.

Project description:Iodine in nuclear waste can cause serious environment pollution and health risks, and has thus driven more development of materials for iodine capture. Herein, a novel porous pillar[6]arene-based polymer (P-P6APs) was easily prepared as a supramolecular adsorbent for iodine via a one-step crosslinking reaction between per-hydroxylated pillar[6]arene and decafluorobiphenyl. Nitrogen adsorption tests demonstrated that this material possessed a satisfactory surface area (S BET = 366 m2 g-1) and pore diameter (3.8 nm), which was due to the macrocyclic scaffolds. Compared with commercially available activated carbon, P-P6APs exhibited superior adsorption efficiency toward volatile iodine not only in the solution phase (water and n-hexane) but also in the gas phase. This outcome was mainly ascribed to nonspecific adsorption by the pore structure of the crosslinked material coupled with multiple intermolecular binding sites of the macrocyclic scaffold. Moreover, this supramolecular absorbent was recyclable and could be reused 5 times with no obvious loss of performance.

Fluorescent aminal linked porous organic polymer for reversible iodine capture and sensing.

Project description:A novel triazene-anthracene-based fluorescent aminal linked porous organic polymer (TALPOP) was prepared via metal free-Schiff base polycondensation reaction of 9,10-bis-(4,6-diamino-S-triazin-2-yl)anthracene and 2-furaldehyde. The polymer has exceptional chemical and thermal stabilities and exhibit good porosity with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 401 m2g-1. The combination of such porosity along with the highly conjugated heteroatom-rich framework enabled the polymer to exhibit exceptional iodine vapor uptake of up to 314 wt % and reversible iodine adsorption in solution. Because of the inclusion of the anthracene moieties, the TALPOP exhibited excellent detection sensitivity towards iodine via florescence quenching with Ksv value of 2.9 × 103 L mol-1. The cost effective TALPOP along with its high uptake and sensing of iodine, make it an ideal material for environmental remediation.

Radioactive iodine and female fertility.

Project description:Radioactive iodine (I131) is used after surgery in the treatment of Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma (DTC). There is no solid evidence about the potential deleterious effect of I131 on women fertility. The objective of this study is to assess the impact that I131 may have on fertility in women. All women followed by DTC in our department have been analyzed and women younger than 45 years old at the time of diagnosis and initial treatment were included. There were 40 women exposed to I131 (study group) and 11 women who were only treated with thyroidectomy (control group). Of the women exposed to I131, 40% went through early menopause, while no cases were reported among their controls. Furthermore, 29.2% of women exposed to I131 had decreased Antimüllerian Hormone (AMH), compared to the only 11% of unexposed women (not significant). Regarding the fertility impairment "perceived" by patients, in the group of women exposed to iodine, 17.9% described being unable to complete their genesic desire whereas, none was registered in the control group. We conclude that radioactive iodine can affect a woman's fertility and shorten her reproductive life, so this is an aspect that should be taken into consideration.

Assessing CO<sub>2</sub> Capture in Porous Sorbents via Solid-State NMR-Assisted Adsorption Techniques.

Project description:Adsorption isotherms obtained through volumetric measurements are widely used to estimate the gas adsorption performance of porous materials. Nonetheless, there is always ambiguity regarding the contributions of chemi- and physisorption processes to the overall retained gas volume. In this work, we propose, for the first time, the use of solid-state NMR (ssNMR) to generate isotherms of CO2 adsorbed onto an amine-modified silica sorbent. This method enables the separation of six individual isotherms for chemi- and physisorbed CO2 components, a feat only possible using the discrimination power of NMR spectroscopy. The adsorption mechanism for each adsorbed species was ascertained by tracking their adsorption profiles at various pressures. The proposed method was validated against conventional volumetric adsorption measurements. The isotherm curves obtained by the proposed ssNMR-assisted approach enable advanced analysis of the sorbents, revealing the potential of variable-pressure NMR experiments in gas adsorption applications.

Quantitative thyroglobulin response to radioactive iodine treatment in predicting radioactive iodine-refractory thyroid cancer with pulmonary metastasis.

Project description:ObjectiveCurrent diagnosis of radioactive iodine (RAI)-refractory (RAIR) differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is based on the imaging technique, which is of a high cost. Serum thyroglobulin (Tg) is a sensitive and easily obtained biomarker. Hence, we aimed to assess the predicting value of quantitative response of Tg in earlier identifying the RAIR-DTC with pulmonary metastasis.Patients and methodsPulmonary metastatic DTC patients who underwent total or near-total thyroidectomy and at least two times of RAI therapy were included in this study. The pre-ablative stimulated Tg at the first and second RAI therapy were defined as pstim-Tg1 and pstim-Tg2, while the suppressed Tg before and after the second RAI therapy were designated sup-Tg1 and sup-Tg2. The predicted value of pstim-Tg2/Tg1 and sup-Tg2/Tg1 ratio were detected using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression analyses.ResultsTotally 115 patients were involved in this study. ROC curves showed a cut-off value of 0.544 for pstim-Tg2/ pstim-Tg1 in detecting RAIR, with a sensitivity of 0.9 and specificity of 0.477, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.744. Similarly, the cut-off of sup-Tg2/ sup-Tg1 was 0.972, with a sensitivity of 0.733 and specificity of 0.935, and AUC of 0.898. Univariate analysis illustrated that age, tumor size, pstim-Tg2/Tg1, sup-Tg2/ sup-Tg1 and BRAFV600E mutation were eligible to predict RAIR. While from multivariate analysis, only age, pstim-Tg2/Tg1, sup-Tg2/ sup-Tg1 and BRAFV600E mutation were verified to be the independent predictive factors.ConclusionThe quantitative Tg response was encouraging in identifying RAIR-DTC with pulmonary metastasis. Age, BRAFV600E mutation and Tg response were independent predictors in predicting RAIR-DTC.

A Porous π-Stacked Self-Assembly of Cup-Shaped Palladium Complex for Iodine Capture.

Project description:Acquiring adsorbents capable of effective radioiodine capture is important for nuclear waste treatment; however, it remains a challenge to develop porous materials with high and reversible iodine capture. Herein, we report a porous self-assembly constructed by a cup-shaped PdII complex through intermolecular π···π interactions. This self-assembly features a cubic structure with channels along all three Cartesian coordinates, which enables it to efficiently capture iodine with an adsorption capacity of 0.60 g g-1 for dissolved iodine and 1.81 g g-1 for iodine vapor. Furthermore, the iodine adsorbed within the channels can be readily released upon immersing the bound solid in CH2Cl2, which allows the recycling of the adsorbent. This work develops a new porous molecular material promising for practical iodine adsorption.

Synthesis of a Triazaisotruxene-Based Porous Organic Polymer and Its Application in Iodine Capture.

Project description:A new triazaisotruxene-based porous organic polymer (POP) was designed and successfully synthesized by a FeCl3-promoted crosslinking reaction. As a result of its porosity and good thermal stability, the designed POP can be utilized as a promising adsorbent for iodine, not only in the gaseous phase, but also in organic and aqueous solutions. Compared to its triazatruxene (TN) analogue, the ITN-based POP shows equal iodine uptake in the gaseous phase and in hexane solution, and better uptake in aqueous solution.

Update on the systemic management of radioactive iodine refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (Review).

Project description:The incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has increased over the last few decades, though it remains to be a rare disease. The prognosis of DTC is excellent; its treatment includes surgery (near-/total thyroidectomy), which is usually followed by remnant thyroid bed ablation using radio-iodine, as well as a risk-stratified follow-ups, including hormone replacement. Treatment of patients who are non-responsive to radioactive iodine (RAI) remains a challenge. Targeted therapies for RAI refractory DTC act primarily through inhibition of cell proliferation, survival and angiogenesis. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have achieved prolonged responses and improved progression-free survival, thereby representing a shift in the treatment of advanced thyroid cancer. There will be number of targeted treatment options for this patient population in the near future. Evidence regarding which drug should be used first and whether there is crossover drug resistance between these drugs is still lacking. Clinicians should be able to choose precisely which patients should be treated with novel targeted therapies after taking into account the following facts: i) TKIs have still not demonstrated a survival benefit. ii) The adverse effects of long-lasting treatment with TKIs could worsen quality of life, which is mostly excellent in these patients before starting treatment with these agents.
