New type of alginate/chitosan microparticle membranes for highly efficient pervaporative dehydration of ethanol.

ABSTRACT: A new type of composite alginate membranes filled with chitosan (CS) and three different modified chitosan submicron particles, i.e. phosphorylated (CS-P), glycidol (CS-G) or glutaraldehyde (CS-GA) crosslinked ones, were prepared, and the pervaporation of water/ethanol mixture was investigated. The influence of various chitosan particles and their content on the transport properties of membranes was discussed. It was found that the addition of chitosan particles into the alginate matrix has a prominent effect on the ethanol/water separation efficiency. All tested membranes are characterized simultaneously by a high flux and selectivity, exhibiting advantageous properties, and outperforming numerous conventional materials. The best results were achieved for alginate membranes filled with phosphorylated chitosan particles at 10 wt%, for which separation factor, flux and PSI were equal to 136.2, 1.90 kg m^-2 h^-1 and 256.9 kg m^-2 h^-1, respectively.

Novel PDMS-b-PPO Membranes Modified with Graphene Oxide for Efficient Pervaporation Ethanol Dehydration.

Project description:Purification and concentration of bioalcohols is gaining new status due to their use as a promising alternative liquid biofuel. In this work, novel high-performance asymmetric membranes based on a block copolymer (BCP) synthesized from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) were developed for enhanced pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. Improvement in dehydration performance was achieved by obtaining BCP membranes with a "non-perforated" porous structure and through surface and bulk modifications with graphene oxide (GO). Formation of the BCP was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The changes to morphology and physicochemical properties of the developed BCP and BCP/GO membranes were studied by scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle measurements. Transport properties of the developed membranes were evaluated by the pervaporation dehydration of ethanol over a wide concentration range (4.4-70 wt.% water) at 22 °C. The BCP (PDMS:PPO:2,4-diisocyanatotoluene = 41:58:1 wt.% composition) membrane modified with 0.7 wt.% GO demonstrated optimal transport characteristics: 80-90 g/(m2h) permeation flux with high selectivity (76.8-98.8 wt.% water in the permeate, separation factor of 72-34) and pervaporation separation index (PSI) of 5.5-2.9.

Efficient Chitosan/Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Membranes for Direct Alkaline Ethanol Fuel Cells.

Project description:Herein, we prepared a series of nanocomposite membranes based on chitosan (CS) and three compositionally and structurally different N-doped graphene derivatives. Two-dimensional (2D) and quasi 1D N-doped reduced graphene oxides (N-rGO) and nanoribbons (N-rGONRs), as well as 3D porous N-doped graphitic polyenaminone particles (N-pEAO), were synthesized and characterized fully to confirm their graphitic structure, morphology, and nitrogen (pyridinic, pyrrolic, and quaternary or graphitic) group contents. The largest (0.07%) loading of N-doped graphene derivatives impacted the morphology of the CS membrane significantly, reducing the crystallinity, tensile properties, and the KOH uptake, and increasing (by almost 10-fold) the ethanol permeability. Within direct alkaline ethanol test cells, it was found that CS/N rGONRs (0.07 %) membrane (Pmax. = 3.7 mWcm-2) outperformed the pristine CS membrane significantly (Pmax. = 2.2 mWcm-2), suggesting the potential of the newly proposed membranes for application in direct ethanol fuel cells.

Collation Efficiency of Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) and Alginate Membranes with Iron-Based Magnetic Organic/Inorganic Fillers in Pervaporative Dehydration of Ethanol.

Project description:Hybrid poly(vinyl alcohol) and alginate membranes were investigated in the process of ethanol dehydration by pervaporation. As a filler, three types of particles containing iron element, i.e., hematite, magnetite, and iron(III) acetyloacetonate were used. The parameters describing transport properties and effectiveness of investigated membranes were evaluated. Additionally, the physico-chemical properties of the resulting membranes were studied. The influence of polymer matrix, choice of iron particles and their content in terms of effectiveness of membranes in the process of ethanol dehydration were considered. The results showed that hybrid alginate membranes were characterized by a better separation factor, while poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes by a better flux. The best parameters were obtained for membranes filled with 7 wt% of iron(III) acetyloacetonate. The separation factor and pervaporative separation index were equal to 19.69 and 15,998 g⋅m-2⋅h-1 for alginate membrane and 11.75 and 14,878 g⋅m-2⋅h-1 for poly(vinyl alcohol) membrane, respectively.

Tailored freestanding multilayered membranes based on chitosan and alginate.

Project description:Engineering metabolically demanding tissues requires the supply of nutrients, oxygen, and removal of metabolic byproducts, as well as adequate mechanical properties. In this work, we propose the development of chitosan (CHIT)/alginate (ALG) freestanding membranes fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. CHIT/ALG membranes were cross-linked with genipin at a concentration of 1 mg·mL(-1) or 5 mg·mL(-1). Mass transport properties of glucose and oxygen were evaluated on the freestanding membranes. The diffusion of glucose and oxygen decreases with increasing cross-linking concentration. Mechanical properties were also evaluated in physiological-simulated conditions. Increasing cross-linking density leads to an increase of storage modulus, Young modulus, and ultimate tensile strength, but to a decrease in the maximum hydrostatic pressure. The in vitro biological performance demonstrates that cross-linked films are more favorable for cell adhesion. This work demonstrates the versatility and feasibility of LbL assembly to generate nanostructured constructs with tunable permeability, mechanical, and biological properties.

Ethanol-Precipitation-Assisted Highly Efficient Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots from Chitosan.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) were prepared from chitosan through a hydrothermal reaction. When ethanol precipitation was used as the purification method, a high product yield of 85.3% was obtained. A strong blue fluorescence emission with a high quantum yield (QY) of 6.6% was observed from the NCQD aqueous solution. Physical and chemical characteristics of the NCQDs were carefully investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transient fluorescence spectra. Experimental results showed that diameters of the NCQDs were in the range of 2-10 nm. The carbon quantum dots possess good water dispersibility and precipitation by ethanol. When used for metal ion detection, the detection limit of the NCQDs for Fe3+ was as low as 1.57 μM. This work proposed a facile method to synthesize NCQDs from chitosan with high yield and demonstrated that carbon quantum dots derived from chitosan were promising for ion detection.

Ethanol dehydration performance of three types of commercial-grade zeolite permselective membranes.

Project description:BackgroundMany organic solvents form difficult-to-separate mixtures with water and have an affinity for water, making drying a potential reuse prerequisite. Pervaporation (PV) and vapor permeation (VP) membrane technologies hold promise for energy-efficient solvent drying. Several water-selective membrane materials are commercially available, but performance data is limited, particularly for two recently commercialized membrane materials: chabazite (CHA) and T-type zeolites. In this work, commercial-grade samples of CHA and T-type membranes, along with a NaA zeolite membrane, were evaluated for the removal of water from ethanol.ResultsThe CHA sample had the highest initial PV water permeance (6820 GPU) and water permselectivity (3430) with 5 wt% water in ethanol at 50 °C. Initial NaA membrane performance was slightly lower (6060 GPU and 3260), while the T-type membrane had the lowest initial permeance and selectivity (4260 GPU and 1090). Performance declined over time, most notably for the NaA membrane, for which water permeance fell over 50% through 39 days of testing. The T-type membrane exhibited the steadiest PV water permeance, but the most variable ethanol permeance.ConclusionThe PV performance of the three membranes largely overlapped the predicted range for T-type membranes. That performance generally exceeds the anticipated ethanol drying performance of non-zeolitic PV membranes but is less than that predicted for NaA and CHA membranes. The present CHA membrane results, along with other recent reports, refine earlier predictions of the ethanol dehydration performance of that type of zeolite. The changing performance with time should be understood to properly design a solvent dehydration system.

Novel Highly Efficient Antibacterial Chitosan-Based Films.

Project description:In this study, we elaborated new chitosan-based films reinforced by iron(III)-containing chitosan nanoparticles Fe(III)-CS-NPs at different concentrations. We found that the optimum concentration of Fe(III)-CS-NPs for the improvement of antibacterial and mechanical properties of the films was 10% (σb = ca. 8.8 N/mm2, εb = ca. 41%, inhibition zone for S. aureus = ca. 16.8 mm and for E. coli = ca. 11.2 mm). Also, using the click-chemistry approach (thiol-ene reaction), we have synthesized a novel water-soluble cationic derivative of chitin. The addition of this derivative of chitin to the chitosan polymer matrix of the elaborated film significantly improved its mechanical (σb = ca. 11.6 N/mm2, εb = ca. 75%) and antimicrobial (inhibition zone for S. aureus = ca. 19.6 mm and for E. coli = ca. 14.2 mm) properties. The key mechanism of the antibacterial action of the obtained films is the disruption of the membranes of bacterial cells. The elaborated antibacterial films are of interest for potential biomedical and food applications.

Novel Mixed Matrix Sodium Alginate-Fullerenol Membranes: Development, Characterization, and Study in Pervaporation Dehydration of Isopropanol.

Project description:Novel mixed matrix dense and supported membranes based on biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) modified by fullerenol were developed. Two kinds of SA-fullerenol membranes were investigated: untreated and cross-linked by immersing the dry membranes in 1.25 wt % calcium chloride (CaCl2) in water for 10 min. The structural and physicochemical characteristics features of the SA-fullerenol composite were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic methods, scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and swelling experiments. Transport properties were evaluated in pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol in a wide concentration range. It was found that the developed supported cross-linked SA-5/PANCaCl2 membrane (modified by 5 wt % fullerenol) possessed the best transport properties (the highest permeation fluxes 0.64-2.9 kg/(m2 h) and separation factors 26-73,326) for the pervaporation separation of the water-isopropanol mixture in the wide concentration range (12-90 wt % water) at 22 °C and is suitable for the promising application in industry.

A highly hydrophilic benzenesulfonic-grafted graphene oxide-based hybrid membrane for ethanol dehydration.

Project description:A new type of hybrid membrane was prepared by blending sodium alginate (SA) with benzenesulfonic-grafted graphene oxide (BS@GO), which showed higher hydrophilicity and more defects or edges than GO to create channels for the transfer of water molecules. BS@GO was synthesized by reacting aryl diazonium salts with graphene oxide (GO). The BS@GO sheets were aligned parallelly to the membrane surface and affected the interactions between the SA chains. BS@GO could improve the hydrophilicity and pervaporation properties of SA-based hybrid membranes. Also, compared to GO fillers, BS@GO fillers could supply higher water permeance to improve the pervaporation flux and separation factor. For the pervaporation of 90 wt% aqueous ethanol at 343 K, the optimum hybrid membrane with 1.5 wt% BS@GO in the SA matrix showed the maximum permeate flux of 703 ± 89 g m-2 h-1 (1.4 times higher than that of an SA membrane), and the highest separation factor was 5480 ± 94 (5.6 times higher than that of the SA membrane). Moreover, the hybrid membrane exhibited good stability and separation ability during long-term testing.

Highly Selective Supported Graphene Oxide Membranes for Water-Ethanol Separation.

Project description:A polyethersulfone (PES)-supported graphene oxide (GO) membrane has been developed by a simple casting approach. This stable membrane is applied for ethanol/water separation at different temperatures. The 5.0 µm thick GO film coated on PES support membrane showed a long-term stability over a testing period of one month and excellent water/ethanol selectivity at elevated temperatures. The water/ethanol selectivity is dependent on ethanol weight percentage in water/ethanol feed mixtures and on operating temperature. The water/ethanol selectivity was enhanced with an increase of ethanol weight percentage in water/ethanol mixtures, from below 100 at RT to close to 874 at a 90 °C for 90% ethanol/10% water mixture. Molecular dynamics simulation of water-ethanol mixtures in graphene bilayers, that are considered to play a key role in transport, revealed that molecular transport is negligible for layer spacing below 1 nm. The differences in the diffusion of ethanol and water in the bilayer are not consistent with the large selectivity value experimentally observed. The entry of water and ethanol into the interlayer space may be the crucial step controlling the selectivity.
