Project description:BackgroundNon-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounts for 90% of all malignant lymphomas. This study aimed to evaluate the global incidence, mortality, associated risk factors, and temporal trends of NHL by sex, age, and country.MethodsData from 185 countries globally were used for analysis. NHL incidence and mortality were collected via the GLOBOCAN (2020), CI5 series I-X, WHO mortality database, the Nordic Cancer Registries, and the SEER Program. The WHO Global Health Observatory provided country-level, age-standardized prevalence of lifestyle and metabolic risk factors. Trends were examined and reported based on average annual percentage change (AAPC) calculated using Joinpoint regression analysis. Incidence and AAPC are based on data for the last 10 years across countries.ResultsGlobally, age-standardized incidence and mortality rates for NHL were recorded at 5.8 and 2.6 per 100,000 individuals, respectively. At country-level, NHL incidence was significantly associated with various factors, including HDI (Human Development Index), GDP per capita, prevalence of tobacco and alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolaemia. Rising trend in NHL incidence was observed, with the highest increase recorded in Estonia (AAPCmale = 4.15, AAPCfemale = 5.14), Belarus (AAPCfemale = 5.13), and Lithuania (AAPCfemale = 4.68). While overall NHL mortality has been decreasing, certain populations experienced increased mortality over the decade. In Thailand, AAPC for mortality was 31.28% for males and 30.26% for females. Estonia saw an AAPC of 6.46% for males, while Slovakia experienced an AAPC of 4.24% for females. Colombia's AAPC was 1.29% for males and 1.51% for females.ConclusionsThis study indicates a rising trend of NHL incidence over the past decade- particularly in developed countries, older males, and younger populations. Further research should investigate deeper insights into specific etiology and prognosis of NHL across subtypes, and potential contributors towards these epidemiologic trends.

Project description:BackgroundUreteral cancer is a rare cancer. This study aimed to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive analysis on the global trends of ureteral cancer incidence and its association with lifestyle and metabolic risk factors.MethodsThe incidence of ureteral cancer was estimated from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Plus and Global Cancer Observatory databases. We analyzed the (1) global incidence of ureteral cancer by region, country, sex, and age group by age-standardized rates (ASR); (2) associated risk factors on a population level by univariable linear regression with logarithm transformation; and (3) incidence trend of ureteral cancer by sex and age group in different countries by Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC).ResultsThe global age-standardized rate of ureteral cancer incidence in 2022 was 22.3 per 10,000,000 people. Regions with higher human development index (HDI), such as Europe, Northern America, and East Asia, were found to have a higher incidence of ureteral cancer. Higher HDI and gross domestic product (GDP) and a higher prevalence of smoking, alcohol drinking, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid disorder were associated with higher incidence of ureteral cancer. An overall increasing trend of ureteral cancer incidence was observed for the past decade, especially among the female population.ConclusionsAlthough ureteral cancer was relatively rare, the number of cases reported was rising over the world. The rising trends among females were more evident compared with the other subgroups, especially in European countries. Further studies could be conducted to examine the reasons behind these epidemiological changes and confirm the relationship with the risk factors identified.

Project description:BackgroundAortic aneurysm has a subtle onset, high rupture mortality, rapid progression in younger individuals, and increasing annual mortality rates. Our study aimed to estimate the global burden and trends of early-onset aortic aneurysm from 1990 to 2021.MethodsParticipants aged 15-39 years from 204 countries and regions (Global Burdern of Disease, GBD) from 1990 to 2021.The primary assessment indicators include age-standardized death rates (ASDR), age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rates (ASDALYR), annual average percent change (AAPC), attributable risk factor proportions, slope index, concentration index, and predictive model for early-onset aortic aneurysm.ResultsFrom 1990 to 2021, the ASDR for aortic aneurysm in adolescents and young adults increased from 0.12 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.11, 0.14) to 0.13 (0.11, 0.14) per 100,000 population, with an AAPC of 0.08% (-0.08%, 0.25%). The ASDALYR rose from 7.25 (6.52, 8.30) to 7.35 (6.51, 8.37), with an AAPC of 0.07% (-0.09%, 0.23%). Both ASDR and ASDALYR are higher in males than females, with a declining trend in females. Higher Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) countries exhibit higher ASDR and ASDALYR compared to lower SDI countries, with a continuous decline observed in high SDI nations. Smoking remains the top risk factor, with population growth being the primary driver. Models predict a global increase in aortic aneurysm deaths, predominantly among males.ConclusionThe overall burden of early-onset aortic aneurysms has exhibited an increasing trend over the last three decades, especially in lower SDI countries. There is an urgent need to develop targeted prevention and control strategies across different regions and countries worldwide.

Project description:BackgroundThe incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has increased steadily over the past few decades. Elucidating its global burden will facilitate more effective disease management and improve patient outcomes. We explored the disease burden, risk factors, and trends in incidence and mortality in NHL globally.MethodsThe up-to-date data on age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of NHL were retrieved from the GLOBOCAN 2020, CI5 volumes I-XI, WHO mortality database, and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, focusing on geographic disparities worldwide. We reported incidence and mortality by sex and age, along with corresponding age-standardized rates (ASRs), the average annual percentage change (AAPC), and future burden estimates to 2040.ResultsIn 2020, there were an estimated 545,000 new cases and 260,000 deaths of NHL globally. In addition, NHL resulted in 8,650,352 age-standardized DALYs in 2019 worldwide. The age-specific incidence rates varied drastically across world areas, at least 10-fold in both sexes, with the most pronounced increase trend found in Australia and New Zealand. By contrast, North African countries faced a more significant mortality burden (ASR, 3.7 per 100,000) than highly developed countries. In the past decades, the pace of increase in incidence and mortality accelerated, with the highest AAPC of 4.9 (95%CI: 3.6-6.2) and 6.8 (95%CI: 4.3-9.2) in the elderly population, respectively. Considering risk factors, obesity was positively correlated with age-standardized incidence rates (P< 0.001). And North America was the high-risk region for DALYs due to the high body mass index in 2019. Regarding demographic change, NHL incident cases are projected to rise to approximately 778,000 by 2040.ConclusionIn this pooled analysis, we provided evidence for the growing incidence trends in NHL, particularly among women, older adults, obese populations, and HIV-infected people. And the marked increase in the older population is still a public health issue that requires more attention. Future efforts should be directed at cultivating health awareness and formulating effective and locally tailored cancer prevention strategies, especially in most developing countries.

Project description:IntroductionThis study aimed to explore the epidemiological trends of laryngeal cancer (LC) using the 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data.MethodsWe analyzed the global LC incidence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and risk factors from 1990 to 2021. We evaluated trends using the annual percentage change (EAPC) and examined variations and associations in LC burden across regions, sociodemographic index (SDI) categories, and age groups.ResultsIn 2021, the global age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) for LC was 2.293 (95% UI: 2.133-2.466), the age-standardized death rate (ASDR) was 1.35 (1.259-1.449), and the age-standardized DALYs rate was 35.803 (33.294-38.538). The EAPCs for ASIR, ASDR, and age-standardized DALYs were -1.089, -1.659, and -1.816, respectively. The ASIR was positively correlated with the SDI (R = 0.32, P < 0.05). The Caribbean had the highest ASDR (2.69) and second-highest EAPC of ASDR (-0.151). Tobacco accounted for 66.46% of global LC deaths, with a decreasing trend over the last 30 years (R = -1, P < 0.05). Conversely, occupational exposure among females showed an increasing trend (R = 0.61, P < 0.05). The reduction in death rate for the 80-89 years age group was nearly twice as high in the high SDI regions as in the low SDI regions (21.89% vs. 11.92%).ConclusionsFrom 1990 to 2021, global LC incidence, deaths, and DALYs decreased, although regional disparities persisted. Death rates remain high in economically disadvantaged regions, especially among the elderly and females with occupational risk. Continued efforts to control tobacco use, develop equitable screening programs, and enhance occupational safety are crucial for addressing global disparities in LC outcomes.

Project description:PurposeHIV/AIDS is a critical public health concern worldwide. This article investigated the spatial and temporal trends in HIV/AIDS burden from 1990 to 2019.MethodsData were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) and the age-standardized rate (ASR) were used to quantify the change in trends at the global, regional, and national levels.ResultsIn terms of temporal trends, during the period 1990-2004, increasing trends in prevalence (EAPC = 7.47, 95% confidence interval [CI] 5.84, 9.12), death (EAPC = 10.85, 95% CI 8.90-12.84), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) (EAPC = 10.40, 95% CI 8.47-12.36) of HIV/AIDS were observed. During the period 2005-2019, the global trends in HIV/AIDS incidence, death, and DALYs of HIV/AIDS decreased, with the EAPCs of -2.68 (95% CI-2.82--2.53), -6.73 (95% CI -6.98--6.47), and -6.75 (95% CI -6.95--6.54), respectively. However, the disease prevalence showed a slight increasing trend (EAPC = 0.71, 95% CI 0.54-0.87). In terms of spatial trends, over the past 15 years, trends in HIV/AIDS incidence of HIV/AIDS appeared upward in High-middle and High sociodemographic index (SDI) areas (EAPC = 6.51, 95% CI 5.50-7.53; EAPC = 2.31, 95% CI 2.02-2.60, respectively).ConclusionDecreasing trends in HIV/AIDS incidence, death, and DALYs have been observed worldwide over the past 15 years, especially in death and DALYs rates. However, the global population living with HIV/AIDS is still increasing. It is worth noting that an unfavorable trend emerged in High-middle and High SDI areas. Prevention and control of HIV/AIDS still need to be strengthened to counteract these concerning trends.

Project description:Leukaemia accounted for approximately 2.5% of all new cancer incidence and 3.1% of cancer-related mortality. The investigation of its risk factors and epidemiologic trends could help describe the geographical distribution and identify high-risk population groups. This study aimed to evaluate the global incidence, mortality, associated risk factors, and temporal trends of leukaemia by sex, age, and country. We extracted incidence and mortality of leukaemia from GLOBOCAN, CI5, WHO mortality database, NORDCAN, and SEER. We searched the WHO Global Health Observatory data repository for the age-standardised prevalence of lifestyle and metabolic risk factors. We tested the trends by calculating Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC) from Joinpoint regression. The age-standardized rate of incidence and mortality were 5.4 and 3.3 per 100,000 globally. The incidence and mortality of leukaemia were associated with Human Development Index, Gross Domestics Products per capita, prevalence of smoking, physical activity, overweight, obesity, and hypercholesterolaemia at the country level. Overall, more countries were showing decreasing trends than increasing trends in incidence and mortality. However, an increasing trend of leukaemia incidence was found in Germany, Korea, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom (AAPC, 2.32-0.98) while its mortality increased in the Philippines, Ecuador, Belarus, and Thailand (AAPC, 2.49-1.23). There was a decreasing trend of leukaemia for the past decade while an increase in incidence and mortality was observed in some populations. More intensive lifestyle modifications should be implemented to control the increasing trends of leukaemia in regions with these trends. Future studies may explore the reasons behind these epidemiological transitions.

Project description:IntroductionOesophageal cancer is a prevalent and deadly cancer around the world.ObjectivesWe aimed to present a comprehensive analysis of the global geographic patterns and temporal trends in the mortality and incidence of oesophageal cancer.MethodsThe mortality and incidence data of oesophageal cancer in 2020 were obtained from the GLOBOCAN database. Based on World Health Organization (WHO) mortality database and the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5), we also retrieved the mortality and incidence age-standardized rates (ASRs) of oesophageal cancer. The average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) of mortality and incidence were calculated using the joinpoint regression analysis.ResultsGlobally, 0.54 million deaths and 0.6 million new cases were identified in 2020. In the majority of countries of South America and Asia, the mortality and incidence trends have substantially decreased, but trends in European countries have varied. The prevalence in European nations varied, but the incidence in most other continents decreased dramatically. In terms of mortality, the global average rate was 5.6 per 100000, ranging from 16.7 (Malawi) to 0.28 (Belize). European countries varied in mortality, such as Norway (AAPC, male: 0.68; female: 0.89) and Ireland (AAPC, male: -0.96; female: -1.52). Most non-European countries saw large decreases in mortality, such as Singapore (AAPC, male: -4.78; female: -6.89). The elderly had more noticeable trends in mortality and incidence in most countries.ConclusionsWe have identified different trends in mortality and incidence among European countries, whereas declining trends were identified in most non-European countries. However, increasing trends were identified in specific subgroups of some countries, such as men in Thailand. For populations with rising mortality and incidence trends, more preventative efforts are required.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to evaluate the updated disease burden, risk factors, and temporal trends of liver cancer based on age, sex, and country.MethodsWe estimated the incidence of liver cancer and its attribution to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 2018 based on the Global Cancer Observatory and World Health Organization (WHO) Cancer Causes database. We extracted the prevalence of risk factors from the WHO Global Health Observatory to examine the associations by weighted linear regression. The trend analysis used data from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents and the WHO mortality database from 48 countries. Temporal patterns of incidence and mortality were calculated using average annual percent change (AAPC) by joinpoint regression analysis.ResultsThe global incidence of liver cancer was (age-standardized rate [ASR]) 9.3 per 100,000 population in 2018, and there was an evident disparity in the incidence related to HBV (ASR 0.2-41.2) and HCV (ASR 0.4-43.5). A higher HCV/HBV-related incidence ratio was associated with a higher level of alcohol consumption (β 0.49), overweight (β 0.51), obesity (β 0.64), elevated cholesterol (β 0.70), gross domestic product (β 0.20), and Human Development Index (HDI; β 0.45). An increasing trend in incidence was identified in many countries, especially for male individuals, population aged ≥50 years, and countries with a higher HCV/HBV-related liver cancer incidence ratio. Countries with the most drastic increase in male incidence were reported in India (AAPC 7.70), Ireland (AAPC 5.60), Sweden (AAPC 5.72), the UK (AAPC 5.59), and Norway (AAPC 4.87).ConclusionWe observed an overall increasing trend of liver cancer, especially among male subjects, older individuals, and countries with a higher prevalence of HCV-related liver cancer. More efforts are needed in enhancing lifestyle modifications and accessibility of antiviral treatment for these populations. Future studies should investigate the reasons behind these epidemiological changes.

Project description:Aim: We aimed to estimate the disease burden and risk factors attributable to ovarian cancer, and epidemiological trends at global, regional, and national levels. Methods: We described ovarian cancer data on incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years as well as age-standardized rates from 1990 to 2017 from the Global Health Data Exchange database. We also estimated the risk factors attributable to ovarian cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years. Measures were stratified by region, country, age, and socio-demographic index. The estimated annual percentage changes and age-standardized rates were calculated to evaluate temporal trends. Results: Globally, ovarian cancer incident, death cases, and disability-adjusted life-years increased by 88.01, 84.20, and 78.00%, respectively. However, all the corresponding age-standardized rates showed downward trends with an estimated annual percentage change of -0.10 (-0.03 to 0.16), -0.33 (-0.38 to -0.27), and -0.38 (-0.32 to 0.25), respectively. South and East Asia and Western Europe carried the heaviest disease burden. The highest incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years were mainly in people aged 50-69 years from 1990 to 2017. High fasting plasma glucose level was the greatest contributor in age-standardized disability-adjusted life-years rate globally as well as in all socio-demographic index quintiles and most Global Disease Burden regions. Other important factors were high body mass index and occupational exposure to asbestos. Conclusion: Our study provides valuable information on patterns and trends of disease burden and risk factors attributable to ovarian cancer across age, socio-demographic index, region, and country, which may help improve the rational allocation of health resources as well as inform health policies.
