Phase-Selective Synthesis of Mo-Ta-C Ternary Nanosheets by Precisely Tailoring Mo/Ta Atom Ratio on Liquid Copper.

ABSTRACT: Phase-selective synthesis is an effective way to expand the ultra-thin transition metal carbide family and tune its properties. Herein, a chemical vapor deposition route with specially designed substrate (Ta wire-Cu foil-Mo foil) is carried out to synthesize Mo-Ta-C ternary nanosheets with tunable phase structure. The Ta atoms diffuse on the surface of liquid copper and Mo atoms diffuse through the liquid copper to the surface, which react with the carbon atoms decomposed from the methane and form the Mo-Ta-C ternary nanosheets. By precisely tailoring the Mo/Ta ratio and growth temperature, ultrathin layered orthorhombic (Mo_2/3Ta_1/3)₂C nanosheets and non-layered cubic (Mo_0.13Ta_0.87) C nanosheets with thickness of 21 and 4 nm are selectively synthesized. The approach could pave the way for the formation of multi-component carbide nanosheets with controllable phases.

Real-Time Multiscale Monitoring and Tailoring of Graphene Growth on Liquid Copper.

Project description:The synthesis of large, defect-free two-dimensional materials (2DMs) such as graphene is a major challenge toward industrial applications. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on liquid metal catalysts (LMCats) is a recently developed process for the fast synthesis of high-quality single crystals of 2DMs. However, up to now, the lack of in situ techniques enabling direct feedback on the growth has limited our understanding of the process dynamics and primarily led to empirical growth recipes. Thus, an in situ multiscale monitoring of the 2DMs structure, coupled with a real-time control of the growth parameters, is necessary for efficient synthesis. Here we report real-time monitoring of graphene growth on liquid copper (at 1370 K under atmospheric pressure CVD conditions) via four complementary in situ methods: synchrotron X-ray diffraction and reflectivity, Raman spectroscopy, and radiation-mode optical microscopy. This has allowed us to control graphene growth parameters such as shape, dispersion, and the hexagonal supra-organization with very high accuracy. Furthermore, the switch from continuous polycrystalline film to the growth of millimeter-sized defect-free single crystals could also be accomplished. The presented results have far-reaching consequences for studying and tailoring 2D material formation processes on LMCats under CVD growth conditions. Finally, the experimental observations are supported by multiscale modeling that has thrown light into the underlying mechanisms of graphene growth.

Mo-Doped Cu<sub>2</sub>S Multilayer Nanosheets Grown In Situ on Copper Foam for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Metal sulfide electrocatalyst is developed as a cost-effective and promising candidate for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, we report a novel Mo-doped Cu2S self-supported electrocatalyst grown in situ on three-dimensional copper foam via a facile sulfurization treatment method. Interestingly, Mo-Cu2S nanosheet structure increases the electrochemically active area, and the large fleecy multilayer flower structure assembled by small nanosheet facilitates the flow of electrolyte in and out. More broadly, the introduction of Mo can adjust the electronic structure, significantly increase the volmer step rate, and accelerate the reaction kinetics. As compared to the pure Cu2S self-supported electrocatalyst, the Mo-Cu2S/CF show much better alkaline HER performance with lower overpotential (18 mV at 10 mA cm-2, 322 mV at 100 mA cm-2) and long-term durability. Our work constructs a novel copper based in-situ metal sulfide electrocatalysts and provides a new idea to adjust the morphology and electronic structure by doping for promoting HER performance.

Precisely Tailoring Upconversion Dynamics via Energy Migration in Core-Shell Nanostructures.

Project description:Upconversion emission dynamics have long been believed to be determined by the activator and its interaction with neighboring sensitizers. Herein this assumption is, however, shown to be invalid for nanostructures. We demonstrate that excitation energy migration greatly affects upconversion emission dynamics. "Dopant ions' spatial separation" nanostructures are designed as model systems and the intimate link between the random nature of energy migration and upconversion emission time behavior is unraveled by theoretical modelling and confirmed spectroscopically. Based on this new fundamental insight, we have successfully realized fine control of upconversion emission time behavior (either rise or decay process) by tuning the energy migration paths in various specifically designed nanostructures. This result is significant for applications of this type of materials in super resolution spectroscopy, high-density data storage, anti-counterfeiting, and biological imaging.

Ultrahigh energy-dissipation elastomers by precisely tailoring the relaxation of confined polymer fluids.

Project description:Energy-dissipation elastomers relying on their viscoelastic behavior of chain segments in the glass transition region can effectively suppress vibrations and noises in various fields, yet the operating frequency of those elastomers is difficult to control precisely and its range is narrow. Here, we report a synergistic strategy for constructing polymer-fluid-gels that provide controllable ultrahigh energy dissipation over a broad frequency range, which is difficult by traditional means. This is realized by precisely tailoring the relaxation of confined polymer fluids in the elastic networks. The symbiosis of this combination involves: elastic networks forming an elastic matrix that displays reversible deformation and polymer fluids reptating back and forth to dissipate mechanical energy. Using prototypical poly (n-butyl acrylate) elastomers, we demonstrate that the polymer-fluid-gels exhibit a controllable ultrahigh energy-dissipation property (loss factor larger than 0.5) with a broad frequency range (10-2 ~ 108 Hz). Energy absorption of the polymer-fluid-gels is over 200 times higher than that of commercial damping materials under the same dynamic stress. Moreover, their modulus is quasi-stable in the operating frequency range.

Tailoring Phosphonium Ionic Liquids for a Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition.

Project description:The existence of more than one liquid state in a single-component system remains the most intriguing physical phenomenon. Herein, we explore the effect of cation self-assembly on ion dynamics in the vicinity of liquid-liquid and liquid-glass transition of tetraalkyl phosphonium ([Pmmm,n]+, m = 4, 6; n = 2-14) ionic liquids. We found that nonpolar local domains formed by 14-carbon alkyl chains are crucial in obtaining two supercooled states of different dynamics within a single ionic liquid. Although the nano-ordering, confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, still occurs for shorter alkyl chains (m = 6, n < 14), it does not bring calorimetric evidence of LLT. Instead, it results in peculiar behavior of ion dynamics near the liquid-glass transition and 20-times smaller size of the dynamic heterogeneity compared to imidazolium ionic liquids. These results represent a crucial step toward understanding the nature of the LLT phenomenon and offer insight into the design of efficient electrolytes based on ionic liquids revealing self-assembly behavior.

Modifying Metastable Sr1-xBO3-δ (B = Nb, Ta, and Mo) Perovskites for Electrode Materials.

Project description:The presence of surface/deep defects in 4d- and 5d-perovskite oxide (ABO3, B = Nb, Ta, Mo, etc.) nanoparticles (NPs), originating from multivalent B-site cations, contributes to suppressing their metallic properties. These defect states can be removed using a H2/Ar thermal treatment, enabling the recovery of their electronic properties (i.e., low electrical resistivity, high carrier concentration, etc.) as expected from their electronic structure. Therefore, to engineer the electronic properties of these metastable perovskites, an oxygen-controlled crystallization approach coupled with a subsequent H2/Ar treatment was utilized. A comprehensive study of the effect of the post-treatment time on the electronic properties of these perovskite NPs was performed using a combination of scattering, spectroscopic, and computational techniques. These measurements revealed that a metallic-like state is stabilized in these oxygen-reduced NPs due to the suppression of deep rather than surface defects. Ultimately, this synthetic approach can be employed to synthesize ABO3 perovskite NPs with tunable electronic properties for application into electrochemical devices.

Copper:caeruloplasmin ratio.

Project description:Investigation of copper status can be a diagnostic challenge. The non-caeruloplasmin-bound copper (NCC) has deficiencies; accordingly, the copper:caeruloplasmin ratio has been suggested as an alternative index of copper status. A reference interval for this index was derived. In addition to making the interpretation of copper easier, the copper:caeruloplasmin ratio should also enable adjustment for relatively high caeruloplasmin concentrations without recourse to producing gender- and age-derived intervals. The copper:caeruloplasmin ratio has weaknesses similar to those identified for NCC in that immunological methods used for caeruloplasmin can cross react with apocaeruloplasmin and there is no standardised method for caeruloplasmin. Caeruloplasmin assays also have uncertainty from precision, bias and specificity and, accordingly, method-related differences may have a large effect on the copper:caeruloplasmin ratio in a manner similar to the NCC.

Probing atom dynamics of excited Co-Mo-S nanocrystals in 3D.

Project description:Advances in electron microscopy have enabled visualizations of the three-dimensional (3D) atom arrangements in nano-scale objects. The observations are, however, prone to electron-beam-induced object alterations, so tracking of single atoms in space and time becomes key to unravel inherent structures and properties. Here, we introduce an analytical approach to quantitatively account for atom dynamics in 3D atomic-resolution imaging. The approach is showcased for a Co-Mo-S nanocrystal by analysis of time-resolved in-line holograms achieving ~1.5 Å resolution in 3D. The analysis reveals a decay of phase image contrast towards the nanocrystal edges and meta-stable edge motifs with crystallographic dependence. These findings are explained by beam-stimulated vibrations that exceed Debye-Waller factors and cause chemical transformations at catalytically relevant edges. This ability to simultaneously probe atom vibrations and displacements enables a recovery of the pristine Co-Mo-S structure and establishes, in turn, a foundation to understand heterogeneous chemical functionality of nanostructures, surfaces and molecules.

CO electroreduction on single-atom copper.

Project description:Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) or carbon monoxide (CO) toward C2+ hydrocarbons such as ethylene, ethanol, acetate and propanol represents a promising approach toward carbon-negative electrosynthesis of chemicals. Fundamental understanding of the carbon─carbon (C-C) coupling mechanisms in these electrocatalytic processes is the key to the design and development of electrochemical systems at high energy and carbon conversion efficiencies. Here, we report the investigation of CO electreduction on single-atom copper (Cu) electrocatalysts. Atomically dispersed Cu is coordinated on a carbon nitride substrate to form high-density copper─nitrogen moieties. Chemisorption, electrocatalytic, and computational studies are combined to probe the catalytic mechanisms. Unlike the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism known for copper metal surfaces, the confinement of CO adsorption on the single-copper-atom sites enables an Eley-Rideal type of C-C coupling between adsorbed (*CO) and gaseous [CO(g)] carbon moxide molecules. The isolated Cu sites also selectively stabilize the key reaction intermediates determining the bifurcation of reaction pathways toward different C2+ products.

Structural Tailoring of a Novel Fluorescent IRE-1 RNase Inhibitor to Precisely Control Its Activity.

Project description:Activation of the IRE-1/XBP-1 pathway has been linked to many human diseases. We report a novel fluorescent tricyclic chromenone inhibitor, D-F07, in which we incorporated a 9-methoxy group onto the chromenone core to enhance its potency and masked the aldehyde to achieve long-term efficacy. Protection of the aldehyde as a 1,3-dioxane acetal led to strong fluorescence emitted by the coumarin chromophore, enabling D-F07 to be tracked inside the cell. We installed a photolabile structural cage on the hydroxy group of D-F07 to generate PC-D-F07. Such a modification significantly stabilized the 1,3-dioxane acetal protecting group, allowing for specific stimulus-mediated control of inhibitory activity. Upon photoactivation, the re-exposed hydroxy group on D-F07 triggered the aldehyde-protecting 1,3-dioxane acetal to slowly decompose, leading to the inhibition of the RNase activity of IRE-1. Our novel findings will also allow for spatiotemporal control of the inhibitory effect of other salicylaldehyde-based compounds currently in development.
