Many naturally occurring bacteria lead a lifestyle of metabolic dependency for crucial resources. We do not understand what factors drive bacteria toward this lifestyle and how. Here, we systematically show the crucial role of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in dependency evolution in bacteria.
