Project description:Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic may leave many people behind through a variety of exclusion processes as basic information about the virus and its spread is shared with the public. We conduct a rapid virtual audit of pandemic related press briefings and press conferences issued by governments and international organizations in order to assess if responses have been inclusive to the hearing-impaired communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We analyze COVID-19 press conferences and press briefings issued during Feb-May 2020, for over 123 LMICs and for international organizations (e.g. the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Health Organization (WHO)). Our virtual audit shows that only 65% of countries have a sign language interpreter (SLI) present in COVID-19 press briefings and conferences. This number is smaller in low-income countries (41%) and Sub-Saharan African countries (54%). Surprisingly, none of the international organizations including the WHO has a SLI present during COVID-19 press briefings. We recommend all countries and international organizations to reconsider ways to make press conferences accessible to a wide audience in general, and to the hearing impaired communities in particular by including a SLI during their COVID-19 briefings, a primary step towards upholding the sustainable development pledge of "no one gets left behind."

Project description:Ultra-electron-deficient azaacenes were synthesized via Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of ortho-diaminoarenes with chlorinated mellophanic diimide followed by oxidation of the intermediate N,N'-dihydro compounds with MnO2 or PbO2 . The resulting cata-annulated bisimide azaacenes have ultrahigh electron affinities with first reduction potentials as low as -0.35 V recorded for a tetraazapentacene. Attempts to prepare a tetrakis(dicarboximide)tetraazaheptacene resulted in the formation of a symmetric butterfly dimer.

Project description:It is well-known that the spatial scale at which neighborhoods are operationalized can affect the outcomes we observe. This article describes a typology of children׳s neighborhood income trajectories generated by sequence analysis using 100 × 100 m grids to define neighborhoods. The article further describes ethnic differences in the prevalence of the different types of neighborhood trajectories, focusing on the children of the four largest non-Western immigrant groups in the Netherlands (Turks, Moroccans, Surinamese, Antilleans) and native Dutch children. The data can be compared to the research article "Ethnic differences in timing and duration of exposure to neighborhood disadvantage during childhood" (Kleinepier et al., 2018).

Project description:Tendon injuries can occur due to sports related incidents, as a result of trauma to overuse or during disease or ageing. Tissue engineering can offer great potential in the treatment of a tendon injury. The preferred cell source is autologous in order to reduce immune response in the treated individual. However, in elderly patients age-related changes in metabolism of the implanted cells may affect results of such therapy. In this study the effect of donor age on synthetic activity of cells used for creation of tendon tissue-engineered constructs was investigated by using label-free proteomic comparison.

Project description:Accessible chromatin refers to the active regions of a chromosome that are bound by many transcription factors (TFs). Changes in chromatin accessibility play a critical role in tumorigenesis. With the emergence of novel methods like Assay for Transposase-accessible Chromatin Sequencing, a sequencing method that maps chromatin-accessible regions (CARs) and enables the computational analysis of TF binding at chromatin-accessible sites, the regulatory landscape in cancer can be dissected. Herein, we developed a comprehensive cancer chromatin accessibility database named CATA, which aims to provide available resources of cancer CARs and to annotate their potential roles in the regulation of genes in a cancer type-specific manner. In this version, CATA stores 2 991 163 CARs from 23 cancer types, binding information of 1398 TFs within the CARs, and provides multiple annotations about these regions, including common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), risk SNPs, copy number variation, somatic mutations, motif changes, expression quantitative trait loci, methylation and CRISPR/Cas9 target loci. Moreover, CATA supports cancer survival analysis of the CAR-associated genes and provides detailed clinical information of the tumor samples. Project description:Despite over 50years of inhaled beta-agonists and corticosteroids as the default management or rescue drugs for asthma, recent research suggests that new therapeutic options are likely to emerge. This belief stems from both an improved understanding of what causes and regulates airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction, and the identification of new targets whose inhibition or activation can relax ASM. In this review we discuss the recent findings that provide new insight into ASM contractile regulation, a revolution in pharmacology that identifies new ways to "tune" G protein-coupled receptors to improve therapeutic efficacy, and the discovery of several novel targets/approaches capable of effecting bronchoprotection or bronchodilation.

Project description:BackgroundThe Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) application is an electronic data collection tool developed to provide a standard, easy-to-use method for collecting low-cost, time-relevant data on diet quality.ObjectiveTo assess the feasibility and ease-of-use of the GDQS application and associated set of 3D cubes used as visual aids to assist the respondent with estimating amounts consumed at the food group level.MethodsThe study was conducted in August 2021 in two regions of Ethiopia with varied dietary practices. Face-to-face interviews were conducted in Amharic and Somali by 10 enumerators among 120 women to collect dietary data using the GDQS application. Feedback on each completed interview was collected from both the respondent and enumerator. Enumerators also participated in focus group discussions.ResultsEnumerators rated the GDQS application as easy to use after 85.8% of the interviews completed. They identified the automatic provision of food-specific probes to guide the interview, the automatic classification of reported foods, beverages, and ingredients into the corresponding GDQS food groups, and the ability to work offline as the main advantages of the application. Most respondents (78.3%) did not find it difficult to choose the cube that corresponded to the amount of each food group they reported consuming. Respondents' feedback on the open recall of all foods, beverages and mixed dishes consumed the previous day and the use of 3D cubes was mostly positive.ConclusionThe results suggest that the GDQS application and cubes were easy to use and feasible for collecting data on diet quality in a low-income country setting.

Project description:IntroductionFollowing lockdown periods and restricting public health measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, respiratory tract infections (RTIs) rose significantly worldwide. This led to an increased burden on children's hospitals compromising medical care of acutely and chronically ill children. We characterized changes in the epidemiological pattern of circulating respiratory viral infections.MethodsWe assessed the number of patients with RTIs and the annual distribution of virus detections between 2019 and 2022 based on 4809 clinical samples (4131 patients) from a German pediatric tertiary care-center. We investigated the impact of lockdown periods on spectra of circulating respiratory viruses, pattern of coinfections, age, and seasonality of infections.ResultsA fourfold increase in the number of respiratory virus detections was observed in 2022 vs 2019 with numbers doubling in 2022 (vs 2021). In 2022, seasonal patterns of circulating virus, particularly Adeno and seasonal Coronavirus were far less pronounced compared to previous years, in fact almost disappeared for Rhinoviruses.". SARS-CoV-2, Parainfluenza- and human Metapneumovirus detections increased significantly in 2022 (2019 vs 2022, p < 0.01). Coinfections with multiple viruses occurred more frequently since 2021 compared to pre-pandemic years, especially in younger children (2019 vs 2022, p < 0.01).ConclusionCompared to pre-pandemic years, we observed a dramatic increase in pediatric RTIs with an incrementing spectrum of viruses and a predominance in Rhino/Enterovirus infections - leading to a high rate of hospital admissions, particularly in conjunction with other viruses. This caused an acute shortage in medical care and may also be followed by an increase of virus-triggered secondary chronic respiratory diseases like asthma-rendering a burden on the health system.
