Increasing Chinese EFL Learners' Grit: The Role of Teacher Respect and Support.

ABSTRACT: Owing to the pivotal role of grit in scholastic success, factors that help learners become gritty are worth to be studied. Accordingly, this research sought to inspect the impact of teacher respect and teacher support on Chinese EFL learners' grit. In doing so, three reliable measures of the variables were sent to 613 Chinese EFL learners. Using Spearman correlation tests, strong connections were discovered between teacher respect, teacher support, and Chinese EFL learners' grit. Multiple regression analysis was then performed to inspect the role of teacher respect and teacher support in increasing Chinese EFL learners' grit. As a result, both teacher respect and teacher support were found to be highly influential in increased learner grit. The limitations and implications are discussed.

Teacher support as predictors of Chinese EFL learners' classroom flow: the mediating role of academic self-efficacy.

Project description:Informed by social support theory and control-value theory, this study investigates the predictive role of teacher support on classroom flow among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and the mediating effect of academic self-efficacy. A survey was conducted among 557 Chinese university EFL learners to gather relevant data. Descriptive statistics indicate that the participants exhibited a moderate level of classroom flow and exhibited significant variations based on gender and grade. Analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that teacher support has a noteworthy, positive predictive impact on EFL learners' classroom flow. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy serves as a partial mediator between teacher support and classroom flow, with instrumental and emotional teacher support showing the strongest indirect effects. Notably, various dimensions of teacher support, aligning with students' psychological needs as outlined by self-determination theory, have unique predictive effects on both classroom flow and academic self-efficacy. Appraisal and informational teacher support have the greatest predictive influence on classroom flow among the teacher support considered. The findings enhance understanding of the dynamics between teacher support, academic self-efficacy, and classroom flow, offering practical implications for creating autonomy-supportive educational environments that can elevate EFL learners' engagement and academic achievements.

EFL learners' boredom coping strategies: the role of teacher-student rapport and support.

Project description:BackgroundA significant issue in the language education context is examining the coping strategies that learners apply to combat boredom in the class environment. As a significant contextual element affecting different dimensions of learners' acquisition, teacher support in general education has been extensively studied but widely neglected in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. Also, having a relationship with a teacher can help a learner cope better with school challenges as the teacher can act as a reference for the learner.MethodsTo this end, 268 EFL learners participated to fill out the three scales namely, Teacher Support, Teacher-Student Rapport (T-SR), and learners' Boredom Coping Strategies (BCS).ResultsUsing multiple regressions, the results revealed that there are constructive links between these concepts as they affect learners' BCS, and both T-SR and teacher support were predictors of learners' BCS while the better predictor was teacher support.ConclusionsAs a result, it can be assumed that these two elements can enhance the students' BCS in language acquisition which ends in declining boredom. Additionally, this research may have further implications for the team members of language teaching in academic environments.

ESL/EFL Learners' Responses to Teacher Written Feedback: Reviewing a Recent Decade of Empirical Studies.

Project description:Teacher written feedback (TWF) has long been regarded as a necessary pedagogical tool for improving the writing proficiency of ESL/EFL learners, while student responses to this feedback can often reflect its effectiveness. This paper reviews 64 articles appearing in high-ranking journals during 2010-2021 in terms of research methodology, theoretical framework and main findings. Analysis of these articles reveals few studies adopted any theoretical frameworks to examine learner responses to TWF and suggests a need for longitudinal naturalistic studies adopting mixed methods and some theoretical framework such as sociocultural theory of mind (SCT) to better explain learners' dynamic engagement in response to TWF. The main findings of these previous studies reveal the diverse responses among learners at different language proficiency levels and in various sociocultural contexts. The results of the review indicate that future research could take classroom-based mixed-method research design to investigate learner variables.

Effects of perceived teacher support on online language learners' engagement.

Project description:This study aimed to investigate the effects of perceived teacher support on online language learners' engagement. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to explore the issue. A total of 1429 Chinese first-year non-English major students from different disciplines participated in the survey, and three of them were selected as semi-structured interviewees. The collected survey data were processed through multiple analyses with the help of SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0, while qualitative data subsequently gathered from interviews served as supplementary evidence for examining the quantitative results. The findings indicated that online language learners were generally engaged at an intermediate level, and overall perceived teacher support was relatively close to the upper level. Furthermore, online language learners' engagement was positively correlated with perceived teacher support. Specifically, perceived intellectual support dominated in predicting overall engagement, cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, and social engagement, whereas perceived emotional support had the strongest influence on language learners' behavioral engagement in the online context. The implications of these findings for future studies and educational practices were discussed.

Evaluating academic motivation among Chinese secondary EFL learners: validation and measurement invariance.

Project description:Inspired by self-determination theory (SDT), the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) was developed to measure students' learning motivation. While the AMS has been widely validated and used in educational contexts, it has generally overlooked the domain-specific nature of academic motivation, particularly in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in China, home to the world's largest population of EFL learners. This study sought to adapt the AMS and substantiate its validity using both within-network and between-network approaches with a sample of 1,390 Chinese secondary EFL learners. Results from item analysis, internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the 28-item EFL-specific AMS exhibits robust psychometric properties, characterised by a seven-factor structure, and demonstrates invariance across gender and grade levels. Structural equation modelling (SEM) analyses further indicated that both extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are positively correlated with perceived teacher support, engagement, and achievement, whereas amotivation is inversely associated with these outcomes. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are also discussed.

Engagement Mediates the Relationship Between Emotion and Achievement of Chinese EFL Learners.

Project description:Since the coming of Positive Psychology in the field of second language acquisition (SLA), the significance of emotion, especially positive emotion, has been well recognized by researchers. Educational research has indicated that both emotion and engagement play fundamental roles in learning process and psychological wellbeing, but research on their relationship is scant in SLA. The present study contributed to the development of Positive Psychology in SLA by investigating the relationships between achievement emotions, behavioral engagement, and self-reported English achievements. 633 students from four senior high schools in China participated in the study. Data collected through questionnaires revealed: (1) Participants reported a medium to high level of foreign language enjoyment (FLE), foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA), and behavioral engagement; females had a higher level of FLE and behavioral engagement than males; the participants reported more anxiety and less enjoyment than western samples; (2) significant correlations were found between FLE, FLCA, behavioral engagement, and self-reported achievement; (3) significant mediating effects of behavioral engagement were found between both achievement emotions and self-reported achievement, and the mediating effect of engagement was stronger between FLCA and self-reported achievement. The findings extended the nomological network of achievement emotions, developed our insights into the complex relationships between emotions, learner engagement and language achievement, and revealed the mediating effects of behavioral engagement. Finally, directions for future study and implications for foreign language educators were provided.

Unpacking EFL Teacher Self-Efficacy in Livestream Teaching in the Chinese Context.

Project description:Teacher self-efficacy has long been researched in the context of face-to-face teaching, but it has received less attention with regard to online teaching. To address this gap, the current study utilized a questionnaire adapted from Lin and Zheng as the major instrument and supplementary interviews to examine teacher self-efficacy in livestream teaching in the Chinese context. Exploratory factor analysis results from 486 senior high school English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers in China yielded a two-factor structure of teacher self-efficacy comprising instructional self-efficacy and technological self-efficacy. Across the sample, EFL teachers had moderate-to-high self-efficacy in general, and they showed higher levels of technological self-efficacy than instructional self-efficacy. The interview data also indicated a fluctuation in technological self-efficacy at the onset of livestream teaching compared to 1 month into livestream teaching. This study results offer some useful suggestions for enhancing teacher self-efficacy.

Text memorization: An effective strategy to improve Chinese EFL learners' argumentative writing proficiency.

Project description:This study aims to explore the impact of text memorization strategies on Chinese EFL learners' English argumentative writing proficiency, the process of their text memorization, and specific strategies deployed for the enhancement of the memorization effect. Seven text memorization tests, one pre-test, and one post-test were administrated to 33 Chinese English majors to, respectively, examine students' memorization outcomes as well as their English argumentative writing proficiency before and after memorizing seven model English writings. Data were also collected through interviews with the 12 top scorers in text memorization tests. The results showed that text memorization as a foreign language learning strategy significantly impacted the improvement of EFL learners' argumentative writing proficiency. Moreover, in the text memorization process, in which varieties of strategies were employed, it was found that storage was preceded by understanding among the majority of the interviewees. Since text memorization was found to be advantageous to EFL learners' writing proficiency, a new system of text memorization strategies was developed in the current study to provide both scholars and teachers with insight into text memorization strategies associated with the writing skills of EFL learners.

Overlap or breakthrough? exploration of the academic buoyancy structure in Chinese EFL learners.

Project description:Academic buoyancy, recognized as a key component of positive personality traits in learning, has garnered significant attention. However, most research on buoyancy is limited to general educational contexts, lacking a comprehensive theoretical framework that poses challenges in evaluating buoyancy's impact on learners within the domain of second language acquisition (SLA). This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating academic buoyancy within the realm of foreign language learning, specifically among university students in mainland China studying English as a foreign language (EFL). The study comprises two phases, with a total of 632 EFL participants. In the initial phase, a 32-item scale was tailored to the present study, drawing on scales from previous buoyancy-related research. Item analysis and exploratory factor analysis were subsequently conducted with a sample of 209 students. The phase retained 21 measurements and identified three main components of buoyancy: sustainability (the ability to persist despite difficulties), goal-orientedness (the focus on achieving specific learning objectives), and controllability (the perception of managing learning challenges). In the second phase, the refined questionnaire was administered to an additional 423 students, and the data underwent confirmatory factor analysis. A reliable 12-item scale was obtained that accurately reflects the identified components of academic buoyancy. By elucidating the structure of buoyancy, this study offers valuable empirical insights that can guide pedagogical strategies and strengthen learner buoyancy in language learning contexts. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on positive personality traits in education, highlighting the importance of fostering buoyancy in language learners to support their academic success.

Effects of reasoning demands triggered by genre on Chinese EFL learners' writing performance.

Project description:IntroductionGenres, having distinct communicative functions, elicit different levels of reasoning demands in writing tasks. The current study investigated the influence of cognitive complexity triggered by a seldom studied pair of genres (expository writing vs. argumentative writing) on Chinese advanced EFL learners' writing performance.MethodA total of 76 L2 learners participated in two writing tasks: one simpler expository writing task involving fewer reasoning demands and the other more complex argumentative writing task eliciting more reasoning demands. Multiple measure indices were adopted to comprehensively reflect the differences in production dimensions between the two writing tasks, such as lexical complexity, syntactic complexity, accuracy, fluency, and cohesion.Results and discussionThe results showed that cognitive complexity significantly improved lexical complexity, clausal complexity, and cohesion, which generally supported the Cognition Hypothesis. However, phrasal structures and clausal structures within the construct of syntactic complexity displayed a trade-off effect, partially corroborating the Trade-off Hypothesis. Accuracy and fluency were uninfluenced, verifying neither of these hypotheses. Implications for sequencing and designing L2 writing tasks were provided for relevant stakeholders.
