A New Species of the Genus Ophiomonas Djakonov (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea: Amphilepididae) from the Deep-Sea of Japan.

ABSTRACT: A new species, Ophiomonas shinseimaruae, is described based on five specimens collected from deep water settings, southeast of Cape Erimo, Hokkaido, Japan. Ophiomonas shinseimaruae sp. n. is distinguished from other congeners based on the following characters: elongate semi-circular and separated radial shields; triangular oral shields; flat and broad tentacle scales on the second tentacle pore; octagonal dorsal arm plates, approximately three times wider than long on proximal portion of the arm; and three arm spines present proximally on the arm. This is the first record of the genus Ophiomonas from Japanese waters. The COI nucleotide sequence for Ophiomonas shinseimaruae sp. n. is provided.

Project description:Squamophis, a new genus of brittle star is described. Two species are included in the genus: Squamophis amamiensis (Okanishi & Fujita, 2009) from south-western Japan and Squamophis albozosteressp. n. from north-western Australia. Squamophisgen. n. is distinguished from the other genera of the family Asteroschematidae by the following characters: each radial shield is single-layered and is completely covered by plate-shaped epidermal ossicles, and the relative length of the longest arm spine throughout the arms is as long as the length of the corresponding arm segment. Squamophis albozosteressp. n. is distinguished from Squamophis amamiensis in having white, slightly domed, plate-shaped epidermal ossicles on the aboral side of the body, the ossicles on aboral and lateral portion of the arms form transverse rows, and the other part of aboral side of disc and basal to middle portion of arms are brown but tip of the arms are light purple.

Order Euryalida (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea), new species and new records from the South China Sea and the Northwest Pacific seamounts.

Project description:Ophiuroids were collected by the manned submersible 'Shenhaiyongshi' from the deep-sea seamounts in the South China Sea and Northwest Pacific regions at 602-1920 m depth, during 2018 to 2020. A total of nine species was identified, including two new species and seven new records from the South China Sea and one new record from the Northwest Pacific region. Two new species are described as Asteroschemashenhaiyongshii sp. nov. and Asteroschemadomogranulatum sp. nov. The seven new records included five species from the genus Asteroschema, and one species each from the genera Asterostegus and Astrodendrum. Comprehensive descriptions of morphological features are provided, including characteristics of the arm skeleton, as well as a phylogenetic analysis based on 16S and COI sequences. Intraspecific genetic distance ranges of Euryalida species from the present study were 0.34% to 1.38%, which was relatively low compared to other orders in the class Ophiuroidea. The present study suggests a high probability that species of the order Euryalida are more widely spread around the Indo-Pacific region than previously expected.

Ophioderma peruana, a new species of brittlestar (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Ophiodermatidae) from the Peruvian coast.

Project description:Ophioderma peruana sp. n. is a new species of Ophiodermatidae, extending the distribution of the genus Ophioderma to Lobos de Afuera Island, Peru, easily distinguishable from its congeners by its peculiarly fragmented dorsal arm plates. Dense granules, rounded or polygonal cover the disc, the radial shields may be naked or completely covered by granules. A good character for recognizing this species in the field is the dorsal side of the disc which is brown with disc granules lighter cream and brown, the arms are mottled with whitish spots and the ventral part of the disc on the interradial part is brown and the radial part bright yellow.

A new species of the rare, deep-sea polychaete genus Benthoscolex from the Sea of Kumano, Japan (Annelida, Amphinomidae).

Project description:A new species of amphinomid polychaete, Benthoscolex seisuiaesp. n., is described from the Sea of Kumano, Japan, from depths of 487-596 m. The species is distinguishable from its congeners by the following features: i) palps 1.8 times as long as lateral antennae; ii) branchiae do not reach to the tip of the notochaetae. This is the first record of Benthoscolex from Japan. A partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequence from the holotype of B. seisuiaesp. n. is provided for reliable species identification in the future.

Sea stars of the genus Henricia Gray, 1840 (Echinodermata, Asteroidea) from Vostok Bay, Sea of Japan.

Project description:We report seven species of the genus Henricia Gray, 1840 that were found in Vostok Bay, and two species from adjacent area, known from museum collection or seen in underwater footage. while existing literature reported no confirmed species from this area. Most of these species: H. djakonovi, H. alexeyi, H. densispina, H. hayashii, H. granulifera, H. pacifica, H. asiatica, and H. oculata robusta were reported from the Sea of Japan previously. H. nipponica, known from Japan, is reported from Russian seas for the first time. All studied taxa are re-described here using a range of morphological characters and partial 16S rRNA nucleotide sequences, life colorations of several species are reported for the first time, and an identification key is provided. Lectotype designations are fixed for studied series of species described by AM Djakonov.

The complete mitochondrial genome of deep-sea ophiuroid Ophioleila elegans (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea) from the Shkolnik Guyot, a northwest Pacific seamount.

Project description:Ophiuroids are a diversified benthic taxon in the deep sea. Given their various dispersal strategies, they are considered an adequate group to assess genetic connectivity, especially in the seamounts that function as islands. Ophioleila elegans A.H. Clark, 1949, in the family Ophiothamnidae, was previously reported from the Caiwei Guyot, a seamount in the northwest Pacific Ocean. Here, we described the mitochondrial genome of O. elegans collected from another seamount in the northwest Pacific. The whole mitogenome is 16,376 bp in length and encodes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the mitogenome sequences showed that O. elegans was clustered with Histampica sp., the only species for which mitogenome sequence has been reported within the family Ophiothamnidae. The complete mitogenome of O. elegans first reported in the present study provides useful information for population genetics and evolutionary relationship of this taxon, especially in the northwest Pacific seamounts.

The complete mitochondrial genome of a deep sea ophiuroid of the genus Amphiura (Ophiuroidea: Amphiuridae).

Project description:Amphiura is a widely distributed genus of Ophiuroidea from various environment, play an important role in evolution. Here, we reported a complete mitochondrial genome of Amphiura sp. which was collected from a deep sea seamount in the West Pacific. The mitogenome is 15,457 in length, including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. All genes are arranged in the same order of published mitogenomes in the same genus. The phylogenetic analysis support monophyly of the family Amphiuridae but not for the genus Amphiura.

A taxonomic review of the genus Astrocladus (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida, Gorgonocephalidae) from Japanese coastal waters.

Project description:Japanese species of the genus Astrocladus (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida, Gorgonocephalidae) are reviewed. Astrocladus coniferus recently has two junior synonyms, A. dofleini Döderlein and A. pardalis Döderlein, however, status of these species has long been questioned. These species concepts have not been reviewed in recent years and no molecular phylogenetic analyses have been performed. Observations of the lectotype of A. coniferus, as well as the lectotype and four paralectotypes of A. dofleini and the holotype of A. pardalis have revealed that A. coniferus and A. pardalis are conspecific and morphologically distinguishable from A. dofleini. Astrocladus coniferus and A. dofleini are supported as distinct species by our molecular data. Additionally, we re-describe A. exiguus and A. annulatus, based on recently collected specimens and the holotype. We conclude that four species, A. annulatus, A. coniferus, A. dofleini, and A. exiguus are present in Japanese waters.

Ophiuroidea (Echinodermata) from coral reefs in the Mexican Pacific.

Project description:There are numerous and important coral reefs in the Mexican Pacific, but scarce studies of brittle stars conducted in these ecosystems. In this regard, this work provides the first annotated checklist of brittle stars associated with coral communities and reefs in the Mexican Pacific and an illustrated key to identify the species. We also provide taxonomic descriptions, spatial and bathymetric distributions and some important remarks of the species. We report a total of 14 species of brittle stars belonging to nine genera and seven families. Ophiocnida hispida in Jalisco, Ophiophragmus papillatus in Guerrero, and Ophiothrix (Ophiothrix) spiculata and Ophiactis simplex in Colima are new distribution records. The record of O. papillatus is remarkable because the species has not been reported since its description in 1940. The brittle stars collected in this study, represent 22.2% of the total species previously reported from the Mexican Pacific. Presently, anthropogenic activities on the coral reefs of the Mexican Pacific have increased, thus the biodiversity of brittle stars in these ecosystems may be threatened.

Review of Ophioplinthaca Verrill, 1899 (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Ophiacanthidae), description of new species in Ophioplinthaca and Ophiophthalmus, and new records from the Northwest Pacific and the South China Sea.

Project description:The ophiuroid genus Ophioplinthaca is well characterized by the deep incisions in the disc. Prior to this study, it contained 32 accepted species, but species limits and geographic distributions were not well understood. The manned submersible vehicle 'Shenhaiyongshi' was used to collect ophiuroid specimens from the deep-sea seamounts and cold seeps in the South China Sea and Northwest Pacific at 602-3600 m depth, during 2018 to 2020. The genus Ophioplinthaca was reviewed using both morphological data and a phylogenetic analysis, based on COI sequences. The taxonomic status of the genus Ophiophthalmus Matsumoto, 1917, a junior homonym of Ophiophthalmus Fitzinger, 1843 (a reptile) was clarified by proving prevailing usage of the ophiuroid name. A total of eight species were identified, including two new species, described asOphioplinthacabrachispina sp. nov. and Ophiophthalmusserratus sp. nov., and two new records. The new species are characterized by unique features of the arm skeletons. Tabular keys to all Ophioplinthaca and Ophiophthalmus species are provided. Interspecific and intraspecific genetic distance of Ophioplinthaca species ranged from 2.32% to 19.72%, and from 0.26% to 0.90%, respectively. The data suggest that species of the genus Ophioplinthaca are more widely spread around the Northwest Pacific region deep-sea seamounts than previously known.
