Simultaneous dyeing and antibacterial finishing of polypropylene using vinyl sulfone dye under supercritical carbon dioxide.

ABSTRACT: Polypropylene fibres are difficult to dye using commonly used techniques due to the high crystallinity and non-polar aliphatic structure, that lack reactive places for dyes in the molecule. Dyeing PP fabric in scCO₂ with antibacterial dyes merged the dyeing and finishing methods, resulting in a more productive technique in terms of water and energy consumption. Unmodified polypropylene fabric was dyed with 4-[2-[4-(ethenylsulphonyl)phenyl]diazenyl]-N,N-diethylbenzenamine antibacterial dye under scCO₂ medium. The influences of scCO₂ working parameters, such as dye concentration, pressure, dyeing time, and temperature, on fabric dye absorption expressed as color strength were studied. The color strength (K/S) was measured as well as CIELAB color parameters. The results were compared with its water dyeing analogue and it was observed that color strength as well as color depth (L) of the samples dyed in scCO₂ were noticeably better than its water counterpart. In both scCO₂ and water, the fastness properties (washing, rubbing, and light) of the dyed samples were excellent. Antibacterial activity of the dyed polypropylene sample in scCO₂ was estimated and the results indicated good antibacterial efficiency.

Project description:Mechanical interactions between fibroblasts and their surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) guide fundamental behaviors such as spreading, migration, and proliferation that underlie disease pathogenesis. The challenges of studying ECM mechanics in vivo have motivated the development of in vitro models of the fibrous ECM in which fibroblasts reside. Natural materials such as collagen hydrogels bear structural and biochemical resemblance to stromal ECM, but mechanistic studies in these settings are often confounded by cell-mediated material degradation and the lack of structural and mechanical tunability. Here, we established a new material system composed of electrospun dextran vinyl sulfone (DexVS) polymeric fibers. These fibrous matrices exhibit mechanical tunability at both the single fiber (80-340 MPa) and bulk matrix (0.77-11.03 kPa) level, as well as long-term stability in mechanical properties over a two-week period. Cell adhesion to these matrices can be either user-defined by functionalizing synthetic fibers with thiolated adhesive peptides or methacrylated heparin to sequester cell-derived ECM proteins. We utilized DexVS fibrous matrices to investigate the role of matrix mechanics on the activation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, a key step of the fibrotic progression. In contrast to previous findings with non-fibrous hydrogel substrates, we find that fibroblasts in soft and deformable matrices exhibit increased spreading, focal adhesion formation, proliferation, and myofibroblast activation as compared to cells on stiffer matrices with equivalent starting architecture. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Cellular mechanosensing of fibrillar extracellular matrices plays a critical role in homeostasis and disease progression in stromal connective tissue. Here, we established a new material system composed of electrospun dextran vinyl sulfone polymeric fibers. These matrices exhibit architectural, mechanical, and biochemical tunability to accurately model diverse tissue microenvironments found in the body. In contrast to previous observations with non-fibrous hydrogels, we find that fibroblasts in soft and deformable fibrous matrices exhibit increased spreading and focal adhesion formation as compared to those in stiffer matrices with equivalent architecture. We also investigated the role of matrix stiffness on myofibroblast activation, a critical step in the fibrotic cascade, and find that low stiffness matrices promote increased myofibroblast activation.

Project description:Mutual diffusion of six hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, isobutane, benzene, toluene or naphthalene) diluted in supercritical carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text]) is studied by molecular dynamics simulation near the Widom line, i.e., in the temperature range from 290 to 345 K along the isobar 9 MPa. The [Formula: see text] + aromatics mixtures are additionally sampled at 10 and 12 MPa and an experimental database with Fick diffusion coefficient data for those systems is provided. Taylor dispersion experiments of [Formula: see text] with benzene, toluene, n-dodecane and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene are conducted along the [Formula: see text] 10 MPa isobar. Maxwell-Stefan and Fick diffusion coefficients are analyzed, together with the thermodynamic factor that relates them. It is found that the peculiar behavior of the Fick diffusion coefficient of some [Formula: see text] mixtures in the extended critical region is a consequence of the thermodynamic factor minimum due to pronounced clustering on the molecular scale. Further, the strong dependence of the Fick diffusion coefficient on the molecular mass of the solute as well as the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation near the Widom line are confirmed. Eleven correlations for the prediction of the Fick diffusion coefficient of [Formula: see text] mixtures are assessed. An alternative two-step approach for the prediction of the infinite dilution Fick diffusion coefficient of supercritical [Formula: see text] mixtures is proposed. It requires only the state point in terms of temperature and pressure (or density) as well as the molecular solute mass as input parameters. First, entropy scaling is applied to estimate the self-diffusion coefficient of [Formula: see text]. Subsequently, this coefficient is used to determine the infinite dilution Fick diffusion coefficient of the mixture, based on the finding that these two diffusion coefficients exhibit a linear relationship, where the slope depends only on the molecular solute mass.
