Multivariate Control of Effective Cobalt Doping in Tungsten Disulfide for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Tungsten Disulfide (WS2) is considered to be a promising Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) catalyst to replace noble metals (such as Pt and Pd). However, progress in WS2 research has been impeded by the inertness of the in-plane atoms during HER. Although it is known that microstructure and defects strongly affect the electrocatalytic performance of catalysts, the understanding of such related catalytic origin still remains a challenge. Here, we combined a one-pot synthesis method with wet chemical etching to realize controlled cobalt doping and tunable morphology in WS2. The etched products, which composed of porous WS2, CoS2 and a spot of WOx, show a low overpotential and small Tafel slope in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The overpotential could be optimized to -134 mV (at 10 mA/cm2) with a Tafel slope of 76 mV/dec at high loadings (5.1 mg/cm2). Under N2 adsorption analysis, the treated WS2 sample shows an increase in macropore (>50 nm) distributions, which may explain the increase inefficiency of HER activity. We applied electron holography to analyze the catalytic origin and found a low surface electrostatic potential in Co-doped region. This work may provide further understanding of the HER mechanism at the nanometer scale, and open up new avenues for designing catalysts based on other transition metal dichalcogenides for highly efficient HER.

Controlled partial transfer hydrogenation of quinolines by cobalt-amido cooperative catalysis.

Project description:Catalytic hydrogenation or transfer hydrogenation of quinolines was thought to be a direct strategy to access dihydroquinolines. However, the challenge is to control the chemoselectivity and regioselectivity. Here we report an efficient partial transfer hydrogenation system operated by a cobalt-amido cooperative catalyst, which converts quinolines to 1,2-dihydroquinolines by the reaction with H3N·BH3 at room temperature. This methodology enables the large scale synthesis of many 1,2-dihydroquinolines with a broad range of functional groups. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the reduction of quinoline is controlled precisely by cobalt-amido cooperation to operate dihydrogen transfer from H3N·BH3 to the N=C bond of the substrates.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of quinolines with water over a fluorine-modified cobalt catalyst.

Project description:Room temperature and selective hydrogenation of quinolines to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines using a safe and clean hydrogen donor catalyzed by cost-effective materials is significant yet challenging because of the difficult activation of quinolines and H2. Here, a fluorine-modified cobalt catalyst is synthesized via electroreduction of a Co(OH)F precursor that exhibits high activity for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of quinolines by using H2O as the hydrogen source to produce 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines with up to 99% selectivity and 94% isolated yield under ambient conditions. Fluorine surface-sites are shown to enhance the adsorption of quinolines and promote water activation to produce active atomic hydrogen (H*) by forming F--K+(H2O)7 networks. A 1,4/2,3-addition pathway involving H* is proposed through combining experimental and theoretical results. Wide substrate scopes, scalable synthesis of bioactive precursors, facile preparation of deuterated analogues, and the paired synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline and industrially important adiponitrile at a low voltage highlight the promising applications of this methodology.

Highly efficient ethylene production via electrocatalytic hydrogenation of acetylene under mild conditions.

Project description:Renewable energy-based electrocatalytic hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene (E-HAE) under mild conditions is an attractive substitution to the conventional energy-intensive industrial process, but is challenging due to its low Faradaic efficiency caused by competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we report a highly efficient and selective E-HAE process at room temperature and ambient pressure over the Cu catalyst. A high Faradaic efficiency of 83.2% for ethylene with a current density of 29 mA cm-2 is reached at -0.6 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. In-situ spectroscopic characterizations combined with first-principles calculations reveal that electron transfer from the Cu surface to adsorbed acetylene induces preferential adsorption and hydrogenation of the acetylene over hydrogen formation, thus enabling a highly selective E-HAE process through the electron-coupled proton transfer mechanism. This work presents a feasible route for high-efficiency ethylene production from E-HAE.

General and Efficient Copper-Catalyzed Oxazaborolidine Complex in Transfer Hydrogenation of Isoquinolines under Mild Conditions.

Project description:A general and efficient method for copper-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of isoquinolines with an oxazaborolidine-BH3 complex, under mild reaction conditions, is successfully developed. A broad range of isoquinolines has been reduced to the corresponding products with 61-85% yields. The method is applied to the synthesis of biologically active tetrahydrosioquinoline alkaloid (±)-norlaudanosine in 62% yield, which is the key precursor for the preparation of (±)-laudanosine, (±)-N-methyl-laudanosine, and (±)-xylopinine in one or two steps.

Selective cobalt nanoparticles for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes.

Project description:Nitrogen modified cobalt catalysts supported on carbon were prepared by pyrolysis of the mixture generated from cobalt(ii) acetate in aqueous solution of melamine or waste melamine resins, which are widely used as industrial polymers. The obtained nanostructured materials catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes with formic acid in the absence of base. The optimal Co/Melamine-2@C-700 catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity for the dehydrogenation of formic acid into molecular hydrogen and carbon dioxide and allows for the reduction of diverse N-heteroarenes including substrates featuring sensitive functional groups.

Tuning crystal-phase of bimetallic single-nanoparticle for catalytic hydrogenation.

Project description:Bimetallic nanoparticles afford geometric variation and electron redistribution via strong metal-metal interactions that substantially promote the activity and selectivity in catalysis. Quantitatively describing the atomic configuration of the catalytically active sites, however, is experimentally challenged by the averaging ensemble effect that is caused by the interplay between particle size and crystal-phase at elevated temperatures and under reactive gases. Here, we report that the intrinsic activity of the body-centered cubic PdCu nanoparticle, for acetylene hydrogenation, is one order of magnitude greater than that of the face-centered cubic one. This finding is based on precisely identifying the atomic structures of the active sites over the same-sized but crystal-phase-varied single-particles. The densely-populated Pd-Cu bond on the chemically ordered nanoparticle possesses isolated Pd site with a lower coordination number and a high-lying valence d-band center, and thus greatly expedites the dissociation of H2 over Pd atom and efficiently accommodates the activated H atoms on the particle top/subsurfaces.
