In Europe, amatoxin-containing mushrooms are responsible for most of the deadly poisonings caused by macrofungi. The present work presents a multidisciplinary revision of the European species of <i>Amanita</i> sect. <i>Phalloideae</i> based on morphology, phylogeny, epidemiology, and biochemistry of amatoxins and phallotoxins.
