Synopsis of Leptosphaeriaceae and Introduction of Three New Taxa and One New Record from China.

ABSTRACT: Leptosphaeriaceae, a diverse family in the order Pleosporales, is remarkable for its scleroplectenchymatous or plectenchymatous peridium cells. Four Leptosphaeriaceae species were discovered and studied during the investigation of saprobic fungi from plant substrates in China. Novel taxa were defined using multiloci phylogenetic analyses and are supported by morphology. Based on maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses, these isolates represent three novel taxa and one new record within Leptosphaeriaceae. A new genus, Angularia, is introduced to accommodate Angularia xanthoceratis, with a synopsis chart for 15 genera in Leptosphaeriaceae. This study also revealed a new species, Plenodomus changchunensis, and a new record of Alternariaster centaureae-diffusae. These species add to the increasing number of fungi known from China.

Project description:During an investigation of helicosporous fungi in China, a total of seven helicosporous hyphomycetes were obtained from decaying wood in the southern region of the country. Based on phylogenetic analyses using a combined LSU, ITS, tef1α, and rpb2 sequence matrix, in conjunction with morphological comparisons, these taxa were classified within Tubeufia (Tubeufiaceae, Tubeufiales) and were recognized as three new species, viz. Tubeufiaguttulata, T.hainanensis, and T.muriformis, as well as one new distribution record, viz. T.cocois. Evidence for these new taxa and the new record, descriptions, illustrations, notes, and phylogenetic evidence are provided for the newly collected helicosporous species.

Project description:Two new species of the genus Parakiefferiella Thienemann, 1936 (Parakiefferiella fasciata Liu & Wang, sp. n. and Parakiefferiella liupanensis Liu & Wang, sp. n.) are described as adult males from China. Parakiefferiella tamatriangulata Sasa is recorded from China for the first time. A key to the known adult males of Parakiefferiella from China is presented. The generic diagnosis of male Parakiefferiella given by Cranston et al. (1989) is emended.

Three new taxa of the lichen genus Lobothallia (Megasporaceae, Ascomycota) from China.

Project description:Two new species; Lobothalliacrenulata Lun Wang & Y. Y. Zhang, L.lobulata Lun Wang & Y. Y. Zhang and one new variety; L.subdiffractavar.rimosa Lun Wang & Y. Y. Zhang, are reported from China and described, based on morphological, chemical and molecular characters. Phylogenetic analyses showed that these new taxa form monophyletic groups. Lobothalliacrenulata and L.lobulata, together with L.hydrocharis, L.radiosa and L.recedens, form a well-supported clade, whereas L.subdiffractavar.rimosa is nested within the samples of L.subdiffracta. Lobothalliacrenulata is characterised by its placodioid thallus, thickly pruinose upper surface with a rimose appearance, aspicilioid to lecanorine apothecia with a crenate thalline margin and concave, black and pruinose discs. Lobothallialobulata is characterised by its placodioid thallus, pruinose upper surface with lobules, aspicilioid when immature, lecanorine to zeorine apothecia at maturity and concave to plane, dark brown, shiny and epruinose discs. Lobothalliasubdiffractavar.rimosa is characterised by its areolate thallus, rimose and pruinose upper surface, lecanorine apothecia and slightly concave to plane, black and pruinose discs. Secondary metabolites were not detected in the two new species nor the new variety. A key is provided for the species of Lobothallia in China.

Elaphomyces section Elaphomyces (Eurotiales, Ascomycota) - taxonomy and phylogeny of North European taxa, with the introduction of three new species.

Project description:The North European species of Elaphomyces section Elaphomyces (Eurotiales, Pezizomycotina) are studied. Three new species, E. citrinopapillatus, E. pusillus, and E. roseoviolaceus are introduced and verified by morphology and sequence data from ITS, nuclear LSU, mitochondrial SSU, and β-tubulin. A lectotype for Elaphomyces granulatus is selected. Elaphomyces granulatus and E. muricatus are epitypified with sequenced material from the Femsjö region in South Sweden. Elaphomyces striatosporus is epitypified with sequenced material from the vicinity of the type locality in Norway. A key to all species of Elaphomyces occurring in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden is provided.

Three new species and a new record of ConocybesectionPilosellae (Bolbitiaceae, Agaricales) from Jilin Province, China.

Project description:This study is based on the phylogenetic framework of ConocybesectionPilosellae and incorporates materials from Jilin Province. A systematic phylogenetic tree was constructed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (nrLSU), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α) sequences. As a result, three new species were discovered in Jilin Province: Conocybeverna, which emerges in broad-leaved forests during spring; C.angulispora, characterized by angular and submitriform or slightly hexagonal basidiospores; and C.rubrocyanea, with basidiomata displaying a reddish hue when fresh and a bluish hue when dry. Additionally, a new record for China, C.hexagonospora was identified, characterized by the lack of distinct pubescence on the pileus and slightly hexagonal basidiospores, increasing the total number of species within sect. Pilosellae to 22. Key for sect. Pilosellae is provided, accompanied by morphological descriptions and line drawings for the new species and a new record for China.

Descriptions of four species of Polyxenida Verhoeff, 1934 (Diplopoda, Penicillata) from China, including one new species and one new record.

Project description:This study describes a new species of Polyxenida from China, Lophoturussineprocessus sp. nov., along with a species newly recorded from China: Eudigraphisnigricans (Miyosi, 1947), and provides additional descriptions of Eudigraphissinensis Ishii & Liang, 1990 and Polyxenushangzhoensis Ishii & Liang, 1990. The study conducted mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequencing for all four species and constructed a phylogenetic tree based on the molecular data. The comprehensive morphological descriptions and molecular analyses confirm the addition of one new species and one newly recorded species for the Polyxenida fauna of China, elevating the total number of known Polyxenida species in the country from 10 to 12. The study also includes an identification key for Polyxenida species in China.

Identification of three novel species and one new record of Kirschsteiniothelia (Kirschsteiniotheliaceae, Kirschsteiniotheliales) from Jiangxi, China.

Project description:Fungal diversity is rapidly expanding, with numerous species being discovered worldwide. While plant debris is a habitat favoring the survival and multiplication of various microbial species. In this study, several kirschsteiniothelia-like isolates were collected from dead branches of unidentified perennial dicotyledonous plants. Based on morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, and SSU sequences data using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference, three new species of Kirschsteiniothelia, namely K.ganzhouensis, K.jiangxiensis, and K.jiulianshanensis, were introduced, and one known species, K.inthanonensis, was recorded for the first time from China. To improve our comprehensive knowledge of the species diversity of Kirschsteiniothelia, all accepted Kirschsteiniothelia species with morphological characteristics, sequence data, asexual morphs, habitat, host, and locality are listed.
