1,2σ³λ³-Oxaphosphetanes and Their P-Chalcogenides-A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study.

ABSTRACT: Although 1,2σ⁵λ⁵-oxaphosphetanes have been known for a long time, the "low-coordinate" 1,2σ³λ³-oxaphosphetanes have only been known since their first synthesis in 2018 via decomplexation. Apart from ligation of this P-heterocycle to gold(I)chloride and the oxidation using ortho-chloranil, nothing on their chemistry has been reported so far. Herein, we describe the synthesis of new 1,2σ³λ³-oxaphosphetane complexes (3a-e) and free derivatives (4a-e), as well as reactions of 4a with chalcogens and/or chalcogen transfer reagents, which yielded the P-chalcogenides (14-16a; Ch = O, S, Se). We also report on the theoretical results of the reaction pathways of C-phenyl-substituted 1,2 σ³λ³-oxaphosphetanes and ring strain energies of 1,2σ⁴λ⁵-oxaphosphetane P-chalcogenides.

A combined theoretical and experimental study for silver electroplating.

Project description:A novel method combined theoretical and experimental study for environmental friendly silver electroplating was introduced. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were employed for predicting the behaviour and function of the complexing agents. Electronic properties, orbital information, and single point energies of the 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH), nicotinic acid (NA), as well as their silver(I)-complexes were provided by quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Adsorption behaviors of the agents on copper and silver surfaces were investigated using MD simulations. Basing on the data of quantum chemical calculations and MD simulations, we believed that DMH and NA could be the promising complexing agents for silver electroplating. The experimental results, including of electrochemical measurement and silver electroplating, further confirmed the above prediction. This efficient and versatile method thus opens a new window to study or design complexing agents for generalized metal electroplating and will vigorously promote the level of this research region.

Prebiotic Route to Thymine from Formamide-A Combined Experimental-Theoretical Study.

Project description:Synthesis of RNA nucleobases from formamide is one of the recurring topics of prebiotic chemistry research. Earlier reports suggest that thymine, the substitute for uracil in DNA, may also be synthesized from formamide in the presence of catalysts enabling conversion of formamide to formaldehyde. In the current paper, we show that to a lesser extent conversion of uracil to thymine may occur even in the absence of catalysts. This is enabled by the presence of formic acid in the reaction mixture that forms as the hydrolysis product of formamide. Under the reaction conditions of our study, the disproportionation of formic acid may produce formaldehyde that hydroxymethylates uracil in the first step of the conversion process. The experiments are supplemented by quantum chemical modeling of the reaction pathway, supporting the plausibility of the mechanism suggested by Saladino and coworkers.

PbII-catalyzed transformation of aromatic nitriles to heptanitrogen anions via sodium azide: a combined experimental and theoretical study.

Project description:Under hydrothermal conditions, an open-chain N7 3- anion stabilized in a metal-organic framework (MOF) was achieved for the first time via the in situ reaction of 4-fluorobenzonitrile and sodium azide with Pb2+ ion as catalyst. The anion with C 2h symmetry in the MOF was studied by FT-IR, single-crystal XRD and theoretical calculations. Thermal analysis results demonstrated the stability of the anion in the MOF below 430 °C and a high energy content of 8.61 kJ g-1. The anion is also a good reducing agent. It can easily react with basic KMnO4 solution. Moreover, the present study indicates that the Pb2+ ion activates the azide rather than nitrile in the in situ reaction of nitriles with azides to form polynitrogen and this mechanism is a distinct contradiction with the previous results in which the nitrile reacts with azide in the presence of transition metal ions. Our findings may open a new avenue towards the synthesis and capture of polynitrogen compounds.

Persistent Room Temperature Phosphorescence from Triarylboranes: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Project description:Achieving highly efficient phosphorescence in purely organic luminophors at room temperature remains a major challenge due to slow intersystem crossing (ISC) rates in combination with effective non-radiative processes in those systems. Most room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) organic materials have O- or N-lone pairs leading to low lying (n, π*) and (π, π*) excited states which accelerate kisc through El-Sayed's rule. Herein, we report the first persistent RTP with lifetimes up to 0.5 s from simple triarylboranes which have no lone pairs. RTP is only observed in the crystalline state and in highly doped PMMA films which are indicative of aggregation induced emission (AIE). Detailed crystal structure analysis suggested that intermolecular interactions are important for efficient RTP. Furthermore, photophysical studies of the isolated molecules in a frozen glass, in combination with DFT/MRCI calculations, show that (σ, B p)→(π, B p) transitions accelerate the ISC process. This work provides a new approach for the design of RTP materials without (n, π*) transitions.

Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study of Weak Polyelectrolyte Brushes in Salt Mixtures.

Project description:The swelling behavior of a hydrophobic poly(2diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PDPA) brush immersed in aqueous solutions of single and mixed salts has been investigated using ellipsometry and numerical self-consistent field (nSCF) theory. As a function of solution ionic strength, the osmotic and salted brush regimes of weak polyelectrolyte brushes as well as substantial specific anion effects in the presence of K+ salts of Cl-, NO3-, and SCN- are found. For solutions containing mixtures of NO3- and Cl-, the brush swelling is the same as one would expect on the basis of the concentration-weighted average of the brush behavior in the single salt solutions. However, in mixtures of SCN- and Cl-, the swelling response is more complicated and substantial divergence from ideal behavior is observed. Mean-field theory shows excellent qualitative agreement with the ellipsometry findings. nSCF reveals that for the SCN-/Cl- cases the swelling behavior of the PDPA brush most likely arises from the predominant localization of the weakly hydrated SCN- within the brush compared to the more strongly hydrated Cl-.

Reactions of Arsenoplatin-1 with Protein Targets: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Project description:Arsenoplatin-1 (AP-1) is a dual-action anticancer metallodrug with a promising pharmacological profile that features the simultaneous presence of a cisplatin-like center and an arsenite center. We investigated its interactions with proteins through a joint experimental and theoretical approach. The reactivity of AP-1 with a variety of proteins, including carbonic anhydrase (CA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), myoglobin (Mb), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and human serum albumin (HSA), was analyzed by means of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS) measurements. In accordance with previous observations, ESI MS experiments revealed that the obtained metallodrug-protein adducts originated from the binding of the [(AP-1)-Cl]+ fragment to accessible protein residues. Remarkably, in two cases, i.e., Mb and GAPDH, the formation of a bound metallic fragment that lacked the arsenic center was highlighted. The reactions of AP-1 with various nucleophiles side chains of neutral histidine, methionine, cysteine, and selenocysteine, in neutral form as well as cysteine and selenocysteine in anionic form, were subsequently analyzed through a computational approach. We found that the aquation of AP-1 is energetically disfavored, with a reaction free energy of +19.2 kcal/mol demonstrating that AP-1 presumably attacks its biological targets through the exchange of the chloride ligand. The theoretical analysis of thermodynamics and kinetics for the ligand-exchange processes of AP-1 with His, Met, Cys, Sec, Cys-, and Sec- side chain models unveils that only neutral histidine and deprotonated cysteine and selenocysteine are able to effectively replace the chloride ligand in AP-1.

A combined experimental and theoretical study of radon solubility in fat and water.

Project description:Radon is a radioactive noble gas that can enter the human body, thus increasing the risk of lung cancer. But it is also used for treatment of various ailments, most notably rheumatoid arthritis. The accumulation of radon differs between tissues, with particularly high concentrations in fat tissue. To understand the underlying mechanisms, a combination of γ-spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations were performed, to study the accumulation of radon gas in contact with several liquids (water, fatty acids). The solubilities, specific for a defined radon activity concentration, are in good agreement and differ by two orders of magnitude between water and fat, caused by radon disrupting the hydrogen bond network of water. In contrast, the energy cost of introducing radon atoms into fat is low due to the dispersive interaction between radon and fat, which is a non-polar solvent. This correlation was also explicitly demonstrated in our simulations by changing the polarization of the solvent.

Structural Characterization of Histatin 5-Spermidine Conjugates: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Project description:Histatin 5 (Hst5) is a naturally occurring antimicrobial peptide that acts as the first line of defense against oral candidiasis. It has been shown that conjugation of the active Hst5 fragment, Hst54-15, and the polyamine spermidine (Spd) improves the candidacidal effect. Knowledge about the structure of these conjugates is, however, very limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the structural properties of the Hst54-15-Spd conjugates by performing atomistic molecular dynamics simulations in combination with small-angle X-ray scattering. It was shown that the Hst54-15-Spd conjugates adopt extended and slightly rigid random coil conformations without any secondary structure in aqueous solution. It is hypothesized that the increased fungal killing potential of Hst54-15-Spd, in comparison with the Spd-Hst54-15 conjugate, is due to the more extended conformations of the former, which cause the bonded Spd molecule to be more accessible for recognition by polyamine transporters in the cell.

A combined experimental and theoretical study of ion solvation in liquid N-methylacetamide.

Project description:Most current biomolecular simulations are based on potential energy functions that treat the electrostatic energy as a sum of pairwise Coulombic interactions between effective fixed atomic charges. This approximation, in which many-body induced polarization effects are included in an average way, is expected to be satisfactory for a wide range of systems, but less accurate for processes involving the transfer and partition of ions among heterogeneous environments. The limitations of these potential energy functions are perhaps most obvious in studies of ion permeation through membrane channels. In many cases, the pore is so narrow that the permeating ion must shed most of its surrounding water molecules and the large energetic loss due to dehydration must be compensated by coordination with protein atoms. Interactions of cations with protein backbone carbonyl oxygens, in particular, play a critical role in several important biological channels. As a first step toward meeting the challenge of developing an accurate explicit accounting for induced polarization effects, the present work combines experiments and computation to characterize the interactions of alkali and halide ions with N-methylacetamide chosen to represent the peptide bond. From solubility measurements, we extract the solvation free energies of KCl and NaCl in liquid N-methylacetamide. Polarizable models based on the Drude oscillator are then developed and compared with available experimental and ab initio data. The good agreement for a range of structural and thermodynamic properties in the gas and condensed phases suggests that the polarizable models provide an accurate representation of ion-amide interactions in biological systems.

Adsorption of Aspartic Acid on Ni{100}: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Project description:Understanding the interaction of amino acids with metal surfaces is essential for the rational design of chiral modifiers able to confer enantioselectivity to metal catalysts. Here, we present an investigation of the adsorption of aspartic acid (Asp) on the Ni{100} surface, using a combination of synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, and density functional theory simulations. Based on the combined analysis of the experimental and simulated data, we can identify the dominant mode of adsorption as a pentadentate configuration with three O atoms at the bridge sites of the surfaces, and the remaining oxygen atom and the amino nitrogen are located on atop sites. From temperature-programmed XPS measurements, it was found that Asp starts decomposing above 400 K, which is significantly higher than typical decomposition temperatures of smaller organic molecules on Ni surfaces. Our results offer valuable insights into understanding the role of Asp as a chiral modifier of nickel catalyst surfaces in enantioselective hydrogenation reactions.
