Project description:Deep brain stimulation is a treatment that controls symptoms by changing brain activity. The complexity of how to best treat brain dysfunction with deep brain stimulation has spawned research into artificial intelligence approaches. Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that uses computers to learn patterns in data and has many healthcare applications, such as an aid in diagnosis, personalized medicine, and clinical decision support. Yet, how machine learning models make decisions is often opaque. The spirit of explainable artificial intelligence is to use machine learning models that produce interpretable solutions. Here, we use topic modeling to synthesize recent literature on explainable artificial intelligence approaches to extracting domain knowledge from machine learning models relevant to deep brain stimulation. The results show that patient classification (i.e., diagnostic models, precision medicine) is the most common problem in deep brain stimulation studies that employ explainable artificial intelligence. Other topics concern attempts to optimize stimulation strategies and the importance of explainable methods. Overall, this review supports the potential for artificial intelligence to revolutionize deep brain stimulation by personalizing stimulation protocols and adapting stimulation in real time.

Project description:Nations worldwide are mobilizing to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) given its massive potential to shape global competitiveness over the coming decades. Using a dataset of 2.2 million AI papers, we study inter-city citations, collaborations, and talent migrations to uncover dependencies between Eastern and Western cities worldwide. Beijing emerges as a clear outlier, as it has been the most impactful city since 2007, the most productive since 2002, and the one housing the largest number of AI scientists since 1995. Our analysis also reveals that Western cities cite each other far more frequently than expected by chance, East-East collaborations are far more common than East-West or West-West collaborations, and migration of AI scientists mostly takes place from one Eastern city to another. We then propose a measure that quantifies each city's role in bridging East and West. Beijing's role surpasses that of all other cities combined, making it the central gateway through which knowledge and talent flow from one side to the other. We also track the center of mass of AI research by weighing each city's geographic location by its impact, productivity, and AI workforce. The center of mass has moved thousands of kilometers eastward over the past three decades, with Beijing's pull increasing each year. These findings highlight the eastward shift in the tides of global AI research, and the growing role of the Chinese capital as a hub connecting researchers across the globe.

Project description:PurposeTo analyze the global publications on artificial intelligence (AI) in strabismus using a bibliometric approach.MethodsThe Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database was used to retrieve all of the publications on AI in strabismus from 2002 to 2023. We analyzed the publication and citation trend and identified highly-cited articles, prolific countries, institutions, authors and journals, relevant research domains and keywords. VOSviewer (software) and Bibliometrix (package) were used for data analysis and visualization.ResultsBy analyzing a total of 146 relevant publications, this study found an overall increasing trend in the number of annual publications and citations in the last decade. USA was the most productive country with the closest international cooperation. The top 3 research domains were Ophthalmology, Engineering Biomedical and Optics. Journal of AAPOS was the most productive journal in this field. The keywords analysis showed that "deep learning" and "machine learning" may be the hotspots in the future.ConclusionIn recent years, research on the application of AI in strabismus has made remarkable progress. The future trends will be toward optimized technology and algorithms. Our findings help researchers better understand the development of this field and provide valuable clues for future research directions.

Project description:Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to transform medicine, but the geographic concentration of AI expertize may hinder its equitable application. We analyze 397,967 AI life science research publications from 2000 to 2022 and 14.5 million associated citations, creating a global atlas that distinguishes productivity (i.e., publications), quality-adjusted productivity (i.e., publications stratified by field-normalized rankings of publishing outlets), and relevance (i.e., citations). While Asia leads in total publications, Northern America and Europe contribute most of the AI research appearing in high-ranking outlets, generating up to 50% more citations than other regions. At the global level, international collaborations produce more impactful research, but have stagnated relative to national research efforts. Our findings suggest that greater integration of global expertize could help AI deliver on its promise and contribute to better global health.

Project description:BackgroundThough artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to augment the patient-physician relationship in primary care, bias in intelligent health care systems has the potential to differentially impact vulnerable patient populations.ObjectiveThe purpose of this scoping review is to summarize the extent to which AI systems in primary care examine the inherent bias toward or against vulnerable populations and appraise how these systems have mitigated the impact of such biases during their development.MethodsWe will conduct a search update from an existing scoping review to identify studies on AI and primary care in the following databases: Medline-OVID, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, MathSciNet, AAAI, and arXiv. Two screeners will independently review all abstracts, titles, and full-text articles. The team will extract data using a structured data extraction form and synthesize the results in accordance with PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines.ResultsThis review will provide an assessment of the current state of health care equity within AI for primary care. Specifically, we will identify the degree to which vulnerable patients have been included, assess how bias is interpreted and documented, and understand the extent to which harmful biases are addressed. As of October 2020, the scoping review is in the title- and abstract-screening stage. The results are expected to be submitted for publication in fall 2021.ConclusionsAI applications in primary care are becoming an increasingly common tool in health care delivery and in preventative care efforts for underserved populations. Project description:PurposeTo develop an artificial intelligence (AI) dashboard for monitoring glaucomatous functional loss.DesignRetrospective, cross-sectional, longitudinal cohort study.ParticipantsOf 31 591 visual fields (VFs) on 8077 subjects, 13 231 VFs from the most recent visit of each patient were included to develop the AI dashboard. Longitudinal VFs from 287 eyes with glaucoma were used to validate the models.MethodWe entered VF data from the most recent visit of glaucomatous and nonglaucomatous patients into a "pipeline" that included principal component analysis (PCA), manifold learning, and unsupervised clustering to identify eyes with similar global, hemifield, and local patterns of VF loss. We visualized the results on a map, which we refer to as an "AI-enabled glaucoma dashboard." We used density-based clustering and the VF decomposition method called "archetypal analysis" to annotate the dashboard. Finally, we used 2 separate benchmark datasets-one representing "likely nonprogression" and the other representing "likely progression"-to validate the dashboard and assess its ability to portray functional change over time in glaucoma.Main outcome measuresThe severity and extent of functional loss and characteristic patterns of VF loss in patients with glaucoma.ResultsAfter building the dashboard, we identified 32 nonoverlapping clusters. Each cluster on the dashboard corresponded to a particular global functional severity, an extent of VF loss into different hemifields, and characteristic local patterns of VF loss. By using 2 independent benchmark datasets and a definition of stability as trajectories not passing through over 2 clusters in a left or downward direction, the specificity for detecting "likely nonprogression" was 94% and the sensitivity for detecting "likely progression" was 77%.ConclusionsThe AI-enabled glaucoma dashboard, developed using a large VF dataset containing a broad spectrum of visual deficit types, has the potential to provide clinicians with a user-friendly tool for determination of the severity of glaucomatous vision deficit, the spatial extent of the damage, and a means for monitoring the disease progression.

Project description:PurposeTo generate an overview of global research on artificial intelligence (AI) in eyelid diseases using a bibliometric approach.MethodsAll publications related to AI in eyelid diseases from 1900 to 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database. After manual screening, 98 publications published between 2000 and 2023 were finally included. We analyzed the annual trend of publication and citation count, productivity and co-authorship of countries/territories and institutions, research domain, source journal, co-occurrence and evolution of the keywords and co-citation and clustering of the references, using the analytic tool of the WoS, VOSviewer, Wordcloud Python package and CiteSpace.ResultsBy analyzing a total of 98 relevant publications, we detected that this field had continuously developed over the past two decades and had entered a phase of rapid development in the last three years. Among these countries/territories and institutions contributing to this field, China was the most productive country and had the most institutions with high productivity, while USA was the most active in collaborating with others. The most popular research domains was Ophthalmology and the most productive journals were Ocular Surface. The co-occurrence network of keywords could be classified into 3 clusters respectively concerned about blepharoptosis, meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharospasm. The evolution of research hotspots is from clinical features to clinical scenarios and from image processing to deep learning. In the clustering analysis of co-cited reference network, cluster "0# deep learning" was the largest and latest, and cluster "#5 meibomian glands visibility assessment" existed for the longest time.ConclusionsAlthough the research of AI in eyelid diseases has rapidly developed in the last three years, there are still gaps in this area. Our findings provide researchers with a better understanding of the development of the field and a reference for future research directions.

Project description:BackgroundArtificial intelligence (AI) has promising applications in arthroplasty. In response to the knowledge explosion resulting from the rapid growth of publications, we applied bibliometric analysis to explore the research profile and topical trends in this field.MethodsThe articles and reviews related to AI in arthroplasty were retrieved from 2000 to 2021. The Java-based Citespace, VOSviewer, R software-based Bibiometrix, and an online platform systematically evaluated publications by countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords.ResultsA total of 867 publications were included. Over the past 22 years, the number of AI-related publications in the field of arthroplasty has grown exponentially. The United States was the most productive and academically influential country. The Cleveland Clinic was the most prolific institution. Most publications were published in high academic impact journals. However, collaborative networks revealed a lack and imbalance of inter-regional, inter-institutional, and inter-author cooperation. Two emerging research areas represented the development trends: major AI subfields such as machine learning and deep learning, and the other is research related to clinical outcomes.ConclusionAI in arthroplasty is evolving rapidly. Collaboration between different regions and institutions should be strengthened to deepen our understanding further and exert critical implications for decision-making. Predicting clinical outcomes of arthroplasty using novel AI strategies may be a promising application in this field.

Project description:BackgroundOperations research (OR) is a discipline that uses advanced analytical methods (e.g. simulation, optimisation, decision analysis) to better understand complex systems and aid in decision-making. Herein, we present a scoping review of the use of OR to analyse issues in global health, with an emphasis on health equity and research impact. A systematic search of five databases was designed to identify relevant published literature. A global overview of 1099 studies highlights the geographic distribution of OR and common OR methods used. From this collection of literature, a narrative description of the use of OR across four main application areas of global health - health systems and operations, clinical medicine, public health and health innovation - is also presented. The theme of health equity is then explored in detail through a subset of 44 studies. Health equity is a critical element of global health that cuts across all four application areas, and is an issue particularly amenable to analysis through OR. Finally, we present seven select cases of OR analyses that have been implemented or have influenced decision-making in global health policy or practice. Based on these cases, we identify three key drivers for success in bridging the gap between OR and global health policy, namely international collaboration with stakeholders, use of contextually appropriate data, and varied communication outlets for research findings. Such cases, however, represent a very small proportion of the literature found.ConclusionPoor availability of representative and quality data, and a lack of collaboration between those who develop OR models and stakeholders in the contexts where OR analyses are intended to serve, were found to be common challenges for effective OR modelling in global health.
