Opinions and options about COVID-19: Personality correlates and sex differences in two European countries.

ABSTRACT: In the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we collected data (N = 1,420) from Portugal and Spain in relation to personality (i.e., Dark Triad traits, Big Five traits, religiousness, and negative affect) and attitudes related to COVID-19 about its origins, opinions on how to deal with it, and fear of it. The most pervasive patterns we found were: (1) neurotic-type dispositions were associated with stronger opinions about the origins of the virus and leave people to have more fear of the virus but also more trust in tested establishments to provide help. (2): religious people were less trusting of science, thought prayer was answer, and attributed the existence of the virus to an act of God. We also found that sex differences and country differences in attitudes towards COVID-19 were mediate by sex/country differences in personality traits like emotional stability, religiousness, and negative affect. For instance, women reported more fear of COVID-19 than men did, and this was verified by women's greater tendency to have negative affect and low emotional stability relative to men. Results point to the central role of neuroticism in accounting for variance in broad-spectrum attitudes towards COVID-19.

Project description:Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is often perceived to be a female-predominant disorder in both research and clinical contexts. Although there is growing recognition of possible sex differences, the current literature remains fragmented and inconclusive. This scoping review aimed to synthesize available research evidence on potential sex differences in BPD. PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus and Web-of-Science were searched from January 1982 to July 2022 surrounding the key concepts of sex and BPD. Data searching and screening processes followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology involving two independent reviewers, and a third reviewer if necessary, and identified 118 papers. Data regarding BPD symptoms, comorbid disorders, developmental factors, biological markers, and treatment were extracted. Data was summarized using the vote counting method or narrative synthesis depending on the availability of literature. Males with BPD were more likely to present externalizing symptoms (e.g., aggressiveness) and comorbid disorders (e.g., substance use), while females with BPD were more likely to present internalizing symptoms (e.g., affective instability) and comorbid disorders (e.g., mood and eating disorders). This review also revealed that substantially more research attention has been given to overall sex differences in baseline BPD symptoms and comorbid disorders. In contrast, there is a dearth of sex-related research pertaining to treatment outcomes, developmental factors, and possible biological markers of BPD. The present scoping review synthesized current studies on sex differences in BPD, with males more likely to present with externalizing symptoms in contrast to females. However, how this might change the prognosis of the disorder or lead to modifications of treatment has not been investigated. Most studies were conducted on western populations, mainly North American (55%) or European (33%), and there is a need for future research to also take into consideration genetic, cultural, and environmental concomitants. As the biological construct of 'sex' was employed in the present review, future research could also investigate the social construct 'gender'. Longitudinal research designs are needed to understand any longer-term sex influence on the course of the disorder.

Project description:Resurgence of pertussis has been observed in many countries with high vaccination coverage and clonal expansion of certain Bordetella pertussis strains has been associated with recent epidemics in Europe. It is known that vaccinations have selected strains which are different from those used for vaccine production. However, little is known about the differences in genomic content of strains circulating before the vaccination was introduced. In this study, we compared the genomes of 39 vaccine strains and old clinical isolates collected from Finland (N=5), Poland (N=14), Serbia (N=10) and the UK (N=10). The analysis included genotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH). Compared to the strain Tohama I, the European strains analyzed have lost three major regions of difference (RD3, 5 and 29). However, difference in frequency of the absent RDs 3, 5 or 29 was observed among the four countries. Of the strains with absent RD5, half had also a duplicated region in the genome. All four RDs (RD22, 23, 24 and 26) absent in Tohama I were present in majority of the tested strains. Results obtained from PFGE analysis correlated well with those of CGH. Recently a novel pertussis toxin promoter allele (ptxP3) was described. Strains with ptxP3 have replaced resident ptxP1 strains. When the recent strains (N=22) selected from the four countries were examined, the ptxP3 allele was found in all countries except Poland. Our result indicates that at least three clusters of B. pertussis circulated in Europe in pre-vaccine era and their genomes were distinct from that of the reference strain Tohama I. Although progressive gene loss occurs in B. pertussis population with time, difference in frequency of the lost genes were observed among the countries. The observed differences in genomic content might be vaccine-driven. The strains were serotyped for the fimbriae, genotyped with LightCycler RT-PCR for pertussis toxin subunit 1 (ptxA), pertussis toxin promoter (ptxP) (Kallonen et al 2011, unpublished data, submitted) and pertactin (prn). The vaccine and old strains were assigned to profiles according to the PFGE results. From every PFGE profile from all countries at least 1 strain was selected and tested for CGH. Altogether 29 strains were analysed with CGH from Poland, Serbia and the United Kingdom, 12, 7 and 10, respectively. In addition 5 old previously published Finnish strains were included in the analysis as well as the reference strain Tohama I (Heikkinen et al., 2007). The hybridisations were performed as previously described (Heikkinen et al., 2007). Microarray data analysis was performed with R/Bioconductor (R Development Core Team, 2008). Print-tip-loess normalization was performed with default parameters and the gains/losses were filtered with Limma package. The regions of difference (RDs) found in this study are presented with the nomenclature defined by Brinig et al. (2006). The RDs which were not described by Brinig et al are indicated by RDs and the consequent unused number.
