Preliminary study on parameterization of raw electrical bioimpedance data with 3 frequencies.

ABSTRACT: This study tests the geometrical parameterization method for Electrical Bio-Impedance Spectroscopy (EBIS) readings previously proposed by one of the authors. This method uses the data of just three frequencies (therefore called 3P method). The test was carried out by the analysis of parameterization from 26 spectra (selected from 13 data sets) by the non-linear square (NLS) method, the 3P method and a combination of the two (3P-NLS). Additionally, the behaviour of the 3P method for 4 levels of noise and 3 different ways of segmenting the spectra were also explored with a MATLAB simulation of 400 spectra. Finally, a system for the classification of EBIS readings is presented, based on deviations of the raw data from the semi-circle obtained by the parameterization methods. Overall, the results suggest a very good performance of the 3P method when compared with the other two. The 3P method performs very well with levels of noise of 1 and 2%, but performs poorly with levels of noise of 5% and 10%. The results support the idea that the 3P method could be used with confidence for the parameterization of EBIS spectra, after the selection of three adequate frequencies according to specific applications.

Project description:BackgroundTo investigate the clinical significance of the disturbance coefficient (DC) and regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) as obtained through the use of electrical bioimpedance and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in pediatric neurocritical care.Participants and methodsWe enrolled 45 pediatric patients as the injury group and 70 healthy children as the control group. DC was derived from impedance analysis of 0.1 mA-50 kHz current via temporal electrodes. rSO2 was the percentage of oxyhemoglobin measured from reflected NIR light on the forehead. DC and rSO2 were obtained at 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h after surgery for the injury group and during the health screening clinic visit for the control group. We compared DC and rSO2 between the groups, their changes over time within the injury group and their correlation with intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score, Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) score, and their ability to diagnose postoperative cerebral edema and predict poor prognosis.ResultsDC and rSO2 were significantly lower in the injury group than in the control group. In the injury group, ICP increased over the monitoring period, while DC, CPP and rSO2 decreased. DC was negatively correlated with ICP and positively correlated with GCS score and GOS score. Additionally, lower DC values were observed in patients with signs of cerebral edema, with a DC value of 86.5 or below suggesting the presence of brain edema in patients aged 6-16 years. On the other hand, rSO2 was positively correlated with CPP, GCS score, and GOS score, with a value of 64.4% or below indicating a poor prognosis. Decreased CPP is an independent risk factor for decreased rSO2.ConclusionDC and rSO2 monitoring based on electrical bioimpedance and near-infrared spectroscopy not only reflect the degree of brain edema and oxygenation, but also reflect the severity of the disease and predict the prognosis of the patients. This approach offers a real-time, bedside, and accurate method for assessing brain function and detecting postoperative cerebral edema and poor prognosis.

Project description:Competition is a major determinant of plant community structure consisting of both species-specific and general interactions, either of which may influence competitive competency and plant abundance and size. In certain cases, competitive competency could arise from altered gene expression and plant function when an individual is confronted with new competitors. We explored competition at the molecular level by hybridizing transcripts from Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed), one of North America's most invasive exotic plant species, to an Arabidopsis microarray chip. Centaurea was grown in competition with Festuca idahoensis (Idaho fescue), a native grass species that generally has weak competitive effects against Centaurea; Gaillardia aristata (Indian blanketflower), a native herbaceous species that tends to be a much stronger competitor against Centaurea; or alone (control). The expression of some genes was found to be relatively uninfluenced by the type of plant neighbor, whereas other patterns of gene expression appeared to be more neighbor specific. To our knowledge, these results are the first to identify genes in an invasive plant that are induced or repressed by plant neighbors and provide a new avenue of insight into the molecular aspects of plant competitive ability. Keywords: treated vs.untreated First file, Chip 508 (9-9-05) is preliminary hyb data to see if this cross species hybridization is possible using the OAR27K chip Experiment 1 (chip 508): The Arabidopsis OAR27K gene chip was hybridized with labeled cDNA probes produced from samples of Centaurea RNA at the W.M. Keck Foundation Biotechnology Resource Laboratory, Yale University. The OAR27K gene chip consists of 70-mer oligos representing approximately 27,000 genes from Arabidopsis. Leaf and root samples were reverse-transcribed into cDNA and labeled with different fluorescent dyes (Cy3 and Cy5) using the Genisphere Array 900 kit (Cat No.W500180) (Genisphere, Hatfield PA). Labeled cDNAs were hybridized to the OAR27Kchip using the Advalytix ArrayBooster DNA Microarray Incubator (Advalytix, Boston MA). Approximately 10ug of each sample was used for hybridization.Experiment 2: Hybridization and labeling followed the procedure above, except the experimental control was Centaurea plants grown alone, and the test situations were Centaurea grown with Gaillardia or Festuca neighbors. In each experiment, RNA from Centaurea grown alone was used as the control (labeled with Cy3) and RNA from Centaurea grown with a neighbor was used as the test (labeled with Cy5). Project description:Tomographic medical imaging systems produce hundreds to thousands of slices, enabling three-dimensional (3D) analysis. Radiologists process these images through various tools and techniques in order to generate 3D renderings for various applications, such as surgical planning, medical education, and volumetric measurements. To save and store these visualizations, current systems use snapshots or video exporting, which prevents further optimizations and requires the storage of significant additional data. The Grayscale Softcopy Presentation State extension of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard resolves this issue for two-dimensional (2D) data by introducing an extensive set of parameters, namely 2D Presentation States (2DPR), that describe how an image should be displayed. 2DPR allows storing these parameters instead of storing parameter applied images, which cause unnecessary duplication of the image data. Since there is currently no corresponding extension for 3D data, in this study, a DICOM-compliant object called 3D presentation states (3DPR) is proposed for the parameterization and storage of 3D medical volumes. To accomplish this, the 3D medical visualization process is divided into four tasks, namely pre-processing, segmentation, post-processing, and rendering. The important parameters of each task are determined. Special focus is given to the compression of segmented data, parameterization of the rendering process, and DICOM-compliant implementation of the 3DPR object. The use of 3DPR was tested in a radiology department on three clinical cases, which require multiple segmentations and visualizations during the workflow of radiologists. The results show that 3DPR can effectively simplify the workload of physicians by directly regenerating 3D renderings without repeating intermediate tasks, increase efficiency by preserving all user interactions, and provide efficient storage as well as transfer of visualized data.
