The complete mitochondrial genome of an ornamental firefly Pyrocoelia analis (Coleoptera, Lampyridae).

ABSTRACT: Pyrocoelia analis (Fabricius, 1801) (Coleoptera, Lampyridae, Pyrocoelia) is a beautiful ornamental insect widely distributed in East and Southeast Asia. The complete mitogenome of P. analis has been sequenced. The mitogenome, total length of 14,785 bp, includes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and a noncoding D-loop region. The overall base composition of Pyrocoelia analis mitogenome is 34.63% for A, 13.69% for C, 42.79% for T, and 8.89% for G, with a high A + T bias of 77.42%. These mitogenome data might be useful for further phylogeography analyses and other related studies in Hymenoptera.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the Korean endemic firefly, Luciola unmunsana (Coleoptera: Lampyridae).

Project description:In this study, we announce the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the Korean endemic firefly, Luciola unmunsana Doi, 1931. The full-length circular genome was 15,858 bp, with 77.94% A/T content. It contained the typical set of 37 metazoan genes: 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, as well as an A + T-rich region. The gene arrangement of the species is identical to that of the ancestral arrangement found in the majority of insects. The maximum-likelihood tree, built using all PCGs and two rRNAs via randomized accelerated maximum likelihood (RAxML) showed that L. unmunsana was grouped as a sister to L. curtithorax with the highest nodal support. However, another Luciola species clustered with the Aquatica species such that the genus Luciola was a non-monophyletic group. Therefore, more sampling is required to clarify the phylogeny of Luciola.

Sperm Competition and Paternity in the Endangered Firefly Pyrocoelia pectoralis (Coleoptera: Lampyridae: Lampyrinae).

Project description:The endangered terrestrial firefly Pyrocoelia pectoralis (Olivier) is endemic to China. Populations of P. pectoralis have decreased dramatically due to urbanization and pollution. Breeding and re-introduction to a suitable habitat may save the species from becoming extinct. Because of its polyandrous character, an investigation into the possibility of sperm competition and paternity outcomes from multiple matings was initiated to better understand its reproductive physiology. To achieve these goals, 13 SSR markers were developed. The results of paternity experiments indicate there is a significant difference between P3 and P1 or P2. The female reproductive system has three spermathecae which accept sperm from different matings, and no bursa or spermatophore-digesting organ is developed. Our research established that multiple inseminations with sperm from different males occur, leading to competition between ejaculates. The benefits of such competition include an increasing number of sperm in the ejaculates of competing males and the consequential increase in fertilized eggs (thus, fecundity), and thereby a higher chance of genetic diversity and fitness in the offspring of the firefly P. pectoralis.

Discovery of the female of Pyrocoelia prolongata in Taiwan (Coleoptera, Lampyridae).

Project description:The female of Pyrocoelia prolongata Jeng & Lai, a diurnal lampyrid species from Taiwan, is described for the first time. A single individual was found in a small, shady, dry streambed at the edge of a mixed forest at 2700 m elevation. The individual glowed in darkness and would move its abdomen up and down when disturbed and as a deterring behavior. A key to the females of the species of Pyrocoelia Gorham in Taiwan is provided. The morphology of photogenic organs of females and the function of bioluminescence of day-active species of Pyrocoelia are discussed.

Project description:We will report the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Japanese firefly 'Heike Botaru', Luciola lateralis (Coleoptera: Lampyridae). Total length of this mitogenome was 16,719 bp and the composition of each base was A (42.50%), C (9.01%), G (14.16%), T (34.33%), respectively. The obtained sequence fulfils general mitogenome composition of metazoan (13 protein coding sequences (CDSs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA subunits, and an AT-rich region). From the phylogenetic tree analysis using 25 kinds of insect mitogenome including firefly family was found that L. lateralis is the closest to the genus Aquatica.

Project description:BackgroundWe compiled a database of firefly species records from the Atlantic Forest hotspot in Brazil and made it available at GBIF. Data were gathered from literature and from several key entomological collections, including: Coleção entomológica Prof. José Alfredo Pinheiro Dutra (DZRJ/UFRJ) and Coleção do Laboratório de Ecologia de Insetos from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (CLEI/UFRJ); Coleção Entomológica do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (CEIOC); Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP); Coleção Entomológica Pe. Jesus Santiago Moure from Universidade Federal do Paraná (DZUP/UFPR); and Coleção Entomológica from Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). This database represents the largest contribution to a public repository of recorded occurrences from Neotropical fireflies.New informationThis dataset shows the occurrence and abundance of firefly species in the Atlantic Forest hotspot. Firefly species endemic to this biome are also present and considered in the study. These data can assist scientific and societal needs, by supporting future research projects and conservation decision-making.
