Effect of Ammonia Fiber Expansion Combined with NaOH Pretreatment on the Resource Efficiency of Herbaceous and Woody Lignocellulosic Biomass.

ABSTRACT: The most essential issue facing the world today is the provision of energy and sustainable consumption of natural resources. Pretreatment is an essential step to produce biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, ammonia fiber explosion (AFEX) combined with NaOH (A-NaOH) pretreatment effects on the characteristics of Pennisetum sinese (herbaceous), oak (hardwood), and camphor wood (softwood) were assessed using enzymatic efficiency analysis, thereby identifying the composition properties of subsequent bio-H₂ production. The results show that the lignin removal (84.2%, 59.7%, and 36.7%, respectively) at 5%A-NaOH conditions and enzymatic efficiency (36.2%, 9.7%, and 6.5%, respectively) of Pennisetum sinese (P. sinese), oak, and camphor wood were significantly increased under 4% A-NaOH conditions. Further A-NaOH pretreatment significantly promoted dark fermentation bio-H₂ production (152.3, 99.1, and 76.9 mL/g TS, respectively) and volatile acid production (4660.2, 3720.2, and 3496.2 mg/L, respectively) of P. sinese, oak, and camphor wood. These findings show that A-NaOH pretreatment is an effective means of utilization of lignocellulose resources.

Project description:Cationization of cotton is considered to be an effective way to realize salt-free dyeing of reactive dyes. However, applying cotton modified with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTA) suffers from large consumption of the cationic reagent. One of the reasons is that high crystallinity of cotton fibers hinders the penetration of the reagents into the cellulose interior and limits the reaction between them. This paper designed to use alcohol-water-NaOH system to pretreat the fibers before cationization. With this method, crystallinity of the cotton fibers is decreased and more reactive -OH is exposed, resulting in much higher fiber-reagent reactivity and increased GTA utilization. Influence of alcohol type, alcohol-to-water ratio, and quantity of NaOH on fiber crystallinity and GTA dosage for cationization are all examined. It is found that for achieving 96.0% fixation of C.I. Reactive Black 5 in the absence of salt, GTA dosage can be reduced by half when the fibers are pretreated by alcohol-water-NaOH. Compared with ethanol, n-propanol and isopropanol, tert-butyl alcohol incorporated system shows better performance in increasing fiber reactivity due to their weaker ability to dissolve ions. In this study, XRD and FT-IR are used to demonstrate changes in crystallinity of the fibers after pretreatment. The alteration in micromorphology and hydrophilicity of the pretreated fibers is observed by SEM and water contact angle test, respectively. Furthermore, the alcohol-water-NaOH system can be recycled to show very good repeatability. Notably, all dyed samples pretreated with the system present high color saturation and satisfactory color fastness, especially that the wet rub fastness reaches 4-5 grade, which is one grade higher than that obtained from the conventional dyeing with salt. The above findings prove that alcohol-water-NaOH pretreatment is effective in enhancing reactivity of the cotton fibers and penetrability of the agent, and it shows promising prospects in real application.

Project description:BackgroundOne route for producing cellulosic biofuels is by the fermentation of lignocellulose-derived sugars generated from a pretreatment that can be effectively coupled with an enzymatic hydrolysis of the plant cell wall. While woody biomass exhibits a number of positive agronomic and logistical attributes, these feedstocks are significantly more recalcitrant to chemical pretreatments than herbaceous feedstocks, requiring higher chemical and energy inputs to achieve high sugar yields from enzymatic hydrolysis. We previously discovered that alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment catalyzed by copper(II) 2,2?-bipyridine complexes significantly improves subsequent enzymatic glucose and xylose release from hybrid poplar heartwood and sapwood relative to uncatalyzed AHP pretreatment at modest reaction conditions (room temperature and atmospheric pressure). In the present work, the reaction conditions for this catalyzed AHP pretreatment were investigated in more detail with the aim of better characterizing the relationship between pretreatment conditions and subsequent enzymatic sugar release.ResultsWe found that for a wide range of pretreatment conditions, the catalyzed pretreatment resulted in significantly higher glucose and xylose enzymatic hydrolysis yields (as high as 80% for both glucose and xylose) relative to uncatalyzed pretreatment (up to 40% for glucose and 50% for xylose). We identified that the extent of improvement in glucan and xylan yield using this catalyzed pretreatment approach was a function of pretreatment conditions that included H2O2 loading on biomass, catalyst concentration, solids concentration, and pretreatment duration. Based on these results, several important improvements in pretreatment and hydrolysis conditions were identified that may have a positive economic impact for a process employing a catalyzed oxidative pretreatment. These improvements include identifying that: (1) substantially lower H2O2 loadings can be used that may result in up to a 50-65% decrease in H2O2 application (from 100 mg H2O2/g biomass to 35-50 mg/g) with only minor losses in glucose and xylose yield, (2) a 60% decrease in the catalyst concentration from 5.0 mM to 2.0 mM (corresponding to a catalyst loading of 25 ?mol/g biomass to 10 ?mol/g biomass) can be achieved without a subsequent loss in glucose yield, (3) an order of magnitude improvement in the time required for pretreatment (minutes versus hours or days) can be realized using the catalyzed pretreatment approach, and (4) enzyme dosage can be reduced to less than 30 mg protein/g glucan and potentially further with only minor losses in glucose and xylose yields. In addition, we established that the reaction rate is improved in both catalyzed and uncatalyzed AHP pretreatment by increased solids concentrations.ConclusionsThis work explored the relationship between reaction conditions impacting a catalyzed oxidative pretreatment of woody biomass and identified that significant decreases in the H2O2, catalyst, and enzyme loading on the biomass as well as decreases in the pretreatment time could be realized with only minor losses in the subsequent sugar released enzymatically. Together these changes would have positive implications for the economics of a process based on this pretreatment approach.
