Project description:AimsThere are concerns that the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including employment inactivity and job loss, will have consequences for the UK population's health and wellbeing. However, there is limited qualitative research into how financial adversity contributes to poor health outcomes in this context. This study aimed to explore forms of financial adversity experienced during the pandemic and their subsequent impacts for health and wellbeing.MethodsQualitative semi-structured interviews with 20 people who experienced a form of financial adversity during the pandemic and six service providers employed in social welfare support services. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.ResultsTwo main sources of financial adversity were identified: reductions in household incomes and increased living costs which engendered emotional and physical burdens. Coping strategies included increased financial borrowing, support from informal and formal networks and cutting back on energy use, food and non-essential items.ConclusionOur study highlighted exposure to multiple financial adversities because of the pandemic and how these experiences led to poor mental and physical health. The findings underline the importance of measures attending to the immediate needs of individuals, including accessible, co-located financial and psychological services, as well as broader measures that seek to reduce social and economic inequalities.

Project description:Objective: We analyzed changes in A. fumigatus gene expression profile at various stages of an in vitro model of aspergillosis to study the adaptation of A. fumigatus to the blood environment. Results: Most of virulence factors described to be involved in aspergillosis were not activated during the blood phase. We found three active processes to be activated in the later phase that may help to the adaptation: Iron homeostasis, a partial secondary metabolite cluster and the formation of detoxification enzymes. Conclusions: We propose that A. fumigatus is unable to grow in blood and it requires a metabolic change that allows the organism to shut down all uptake and energy-consume mechanisms, resulting in a resting mycelial stage.

Project description:COVID-19 has caused a global health crisis and severe economic and social consequences. Unprecedented economic disruption and high unemployment are the pronounced impacts of the pandemic. The current study is primarily concerned with the effects of COVID-19-induced labour market outcomes on workers' subjective wellbeing in four MENA countries using the Combined COVID-19 MENA Monitor Household Survey. The study documented that COVID-19-induced labour market changes negatively affected workers' subjective wellbeing after controlling for work characteristics, risks, social distancing, and socio-demographic variables. Job loss, income reduction, and wage delay were the most significant labour changes that deteriorated workers' subjective wellbeing. Our findings underscore the need for policy responses that reduce workers' vulnerability and sustain their livelihoods. Mental health services and income support policies are important tools to enhance subjective wellbeing of economically affected workers.

Project description:IntroductionPharmacological treatment of epilepsy is not healing; it tries to avoid seizures, as far as possible, in children who probably would still have them.Patients and methodsOur purpose is to analyse our experience with epileptic children and those who have a first non-symptomatic seizure without pharmacological treatment. Patients seen in a paediatric neurology consultation, from 2017 to 2021, who had suffered one or more acute non-symptomatic crises and who had not been treated pharmacologically, were analysed.ResultsSixty-five patients meet the selection criteria. Twenty-four patients had had a single crisis with a mean duration of 12 minutes (1-60). In 66.7% it was nocturnal. 41.7% presented pathological electroencephalogram, and 21% pathological findings in neuroimaging. The mean control time was 2.7 years (0.003-13.6 years). Forty-one presented more than one crisis, with a mean duration of nine minutes (1-60). Five patients presented more than 20 seizures, the rest between two and 17. Twenty-four (58.5%) presented only nocturnal seizures. An electroencephalogram was performed in all: epileptiform graphoelements in 63.4%; and neuroimaging in all: pathological in 4.9%. Mean control time was 3.8 years (0.01-9.1 years).ConclusionsSeizure frequency, underlying pathology or test results should not be the only variables to take into consideration when starting antiepileptic drug treatment. The repercussion on their quality of life and neurodevelopment should prevail, agreeing on this decision with the parents.

Project description:The introduction of stereogenic centers in supramolecular building blocks is used to unveil subtle changes in supramolecular structure and dynamics over time. Three stereogenic centers based on deuterium atoms were introduced in the side chains of a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) resulting in a supramolecular polymer in water that at first glance has a structure and dynamics identical to its achiral counterpart. Using three different techniques, the properties of the double helical polymers are compared after 1 day and 4 weeks. An increase in helical preference is observed over time as well as a decrease in the helical pitch and monomer exchange dynamics. It is proposed that the polymer of the chiral monomer needs time to arrive at its maximal preference in helical bias. These results indicate that the order and tight packing increase over time, while the dynamics of this supramolecular polymer decrease over time, an effect that is typically overlooked but unveiled by the isotopic chirality.

Project description:Physical and mental health are determined by an interplay between nature, for example genetics, and nurture, which encompasses experiences and exposures that can be short or long-lasting. The COVID-19 pandemic represents a unique situation in which whole communities were suddenly and simultaneously exposed to both the virus and the societal changes required to combat the virus. We studied 27,537 population-based biobank participants for whom we have genetic data and extensive longitudinal data collected via 19 questionnaires over 10 months, starting in March 2020. This allowed us to explore the interaction between genetics and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' wellbeing over time. We observe that genetics affected many aspects of wellbeing, but also that its impact on several phenotypes changed over time. Over the course of the pandemic, we observed that the genetic predisposition to life satisfaction had an increasing influence on perceived quality of life. We also estimated heritability and the proportion of variance explained by shared environment using variance components methods based on pedigree information and household composition. The results suggest that people's genetic constitution manifested more prominently over time, potentially due to social isolation driven by strict COVID-19 containment measures. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the relative contribution of genetic variation to complex phenotypes is dynamic rather than static.
