The interplay between glycolysis and gluconeogenesis is central to carbohydrate metabolism. Here, we describe novel methods to assess carbohydrate metabolism using [<sup>13</sup>C]-probes derived from glycerate, a molecule whose metabolic fate in mammals remains underexplored.
