All-in-One Structured Lithium-Metal Battery.

ABSTRACT: 3D batteries possess apparent advantage in electrochemical ion-transport kinetics than the conventional-structured batteries. However, due to the special electrode configuration and fabrication complexity, 3D battery design has inherent issue of mechanical stability and only succeeds in microsystems, far from ideal. Herein, a high-stable, all-in-one structured 3D lithium-metal battery is designed which consists of paralleled microcell arrays. Fast ion-transport kinetics in full cell level can not only address the key issue of lithium dendrites in anode but also improve electrochemical performance of cathode. As a result, the resultant lithium metal anode acquires long-term stability of 1000-cycle life at a high current density of 10 mA cm^-2 . Also the all-in-one structured lithium metal battery has general applicability for various cathodic materials and delivers significantly improved rate and cycling performance, as well as high areal capacity up to 10.4 mAh cm^-2 .

Diffusion Control of Organic Cathode Materials in Lithium Metal Battery.

Project description:Organic cathode materials for lithium batteries are becoming increasingly popular because they have high theoretical redox voltage, high gravimetric capacity, low cost, easy processing and sustainability. However, their development is limited by their solubility in the electrolyte, which leads to rapid deterioration of the battery upon cycling. We developed a Janus membrane, which consists of two layers - a commercial polypropylene separator (Celgard) and a 300-600 nm layer of exfoliated graphite that was applied by a simple and environmentally friendly process. The submicron graphite layer is only permeable to Li+ and it drastically improves the battery performance, as measured by capacity retention and high coulombic efficiency, even at 2C rates. Post-mortem analysis of the battery indicates that the new membrane protects the anode against corrosion, and cathode dissolution is reduced. This graphite-based membrane is expected to greatly expedite the deployment of batteries with organic cathodes.

Bioinspired gel polymer electrolyte for wide temperature lithium metal battery.

Project description:Stable operation of Li metal batteries with gel polymer electrolytes in a wide temperature range is highly expected. However, insufficient dynamics of ion transport and unstable electrolyte-electrode interfaces at extreme temperatures greatly hinder their practical applications. We report a bioinspired gel polymer electrolyte that enables high-energy-density Li metal batteries to work stably in a wide temperature range from -30 to 80 °C. The wide-temperature gel polymer electrolyte is fabricated by using a branched polymer of which side chains are double coupled with their asymmetric analogues. The double dipole coupling regulates the Li+ coordination environment to form a weak solvation structure that offers fast and uniform Li+ deposition at extreme temperatures. Consequently, the non-flammable gel polymer electrolyte displays an ionic conductivity of 1.03 × 10-4 S cm-1 at -40 °C and a Li+ transference number of 0.83. The Li metal batteries with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 positive electrode deliver initial specific discharge capacities of 121.4 mAh g-1 at -30 °C and 172.2 mAh g-1 at 80 °C, with corresponding discharge currents of 18.8 mA g-1 and 188 mA g-1, respectively. Additionally, a pouch cell delivers a specific energy up to 490.8 Wh kg-1.

Mechanism of stable lithium plating and stripping in a metal-interlayer-inserted anode-less solid-state lithium metal battery.

Project description:To reliably operate anode-less solid-state Li metal batteries, wherein precipitated Li acts as the anode, stabilizing the interface between the solid electrolyte and electrode is crucial. The interface can be controlled by a metal interlayer on the electrolyte to form a Li alloy buffer that facilitates stable Li plating/stripping, thereby mitigating the loss of physical contact and preventing short circuits. However, the mechanism governing stable Li plating/stripping in the metal interlayer without degrading battery materials remains unclear owing to an incomplete understanding of the dynamic and complex electrochemical reactions in the solid state. Through multiple operando and post-mortem analyses of the Li deposition behavior in the morphology, chemistry and microstructure, a close correlation is found between the Li-metal alloying process with the microstructural evolution and electrochemical performance when Ag, Au, Zn, and Cu interlayers were adopted on the garnet-type solid electrolyte Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12. The Ag interlayer improved the interfacial stability enabled by Ag-dissolved Li, which inhibited dendritic growth, passing through the phase-separated Li-Ag alloy microstructure, while the other metals did not because of the Li plating at the Li-metal alloy/solid electrolyte interface. This work provides fundamental guidance for material selection and interface design, advancing the development of anode-less solid-state batteries.

An aqueous rechargeable lithium battery using coated Li metal as anode.

Project description:New energy industry including electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage in smart grids requires energy storage systems of good safety, high reliability, high energy density and low cost. Here a coated Li metal is used as anode for an aqueous rechargeable lithium battery (ARLB) combining LiMn2O4 as cathode and 0.5 mol l(-1) Li2SO4 aqueous solution as electrolyte. Due to the "cross-over" effect of Li(+) ions in the coating, this ARLB delivers an output voltage of about 4.0 V, a big breakthrough of the theoretic stable window of water, 1.229 V. Its cycling is very excellent with Coulomb efficiency of 100% except in the first cycle. Its energy density can be 446 Wh kg(-1), about 80% higher than that for traditional lithium ion battery. Its power efficiency can be above 95%. Furthermore, its cost is low and safety is much reliable. It provides another chemistry for post lithium ion batteries.

Mechanical rolling formation of interpenetrated lithium metal/lithium tin alloy foil for ultrahigh-rate battery anode.

Project description:To achieve good rate capability of lithium metal anodes for high-energy-density batteries, one fundamental challenge is the slow lithium diffusion at the interface. Here we report an interpenetrated, three-dimensional lithium metal/lithium tin alloy nanocomposite foil realized by a simple calendering and folding process of lithium and tin foils, and spontaneous alloying reactions. The strong affinity between the metallic lithium and lithium tin alloy as mixed electronic and ionic conducting networks, and their abundant interfaces enable ultrafast charger diffusion across the entire electrode. We demonstrate that a lithium/lithium tin alloy foil electrode sustains stable lithium stripping/plating under 30 mA cm-2 and 5 mAh cm-2 with a very low overpotential of 20 mV for 200 cycles in a commercial carbonate electrolyte. Cycled under 6 C (6.6 mA cm-2), a 1.0 mAh cm-2 LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 electrode maintains a substantial 74% of its capacity by pairing with such anode.

Improving Cyclability of Lithium Metal Anode via Constructing Atomic Interlamellar Ion Channel for Lithium Sulfur Battery.

Project description:Uniform migration of lithium (Li) ions between the separator and the lithium anode is critical for achieving good quality Li deposition, which is of much significance for lithium metal battery operation, especially for Li-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Commercial separators such as polypropylene or polyethylene can be prepared by wet or dry processes, but they can indeed cause plentiful porosities, resulting in the uneven Li ion stripping/plating and finally the formation of Li dendrites. Thence, we constructed an atomic interlamellar ion channel by introducing the layered montmorillonite on the surface of the separator to guide Li ion flux and achieved stable Li deposition. The atomic interlamellar ion channel with a spacing of 1.4 nm showed strong absorption capacity for electrolytes and reserved capacity for Li ions, thus promoting rapid transfer of Li ions and resulting in even Li ion deposition at the anode. When assembled with the proposed separator, the Coulombic efficiency of Li||Cu batteries was 98.2% after 200 cycles and stable plating/stripping even after 800 h was achieved for the Li||Li symmetric batteries. Importantly, the proposed separator allows 140% specific capacity increase after 190 cycles as employing the Li-S batteries.

Synergetic pyrolysis of lithium-ion battery cathodes with polyethylene terephthalate for efficient metal recovery and battery regeneration.

Project description:Spent LiNixCoyMnzO2 (x + y + z = 1) and polyethylene terephthalate are major solid wastes due to the growing Li-ion battery market and widespread plastic usage. Here we propose a synergistic pyrolysis strategy to recover valuable metals by thermally treating LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 and polyethylene terephthalate. With polyethylene terephthalate assistance, LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 decomposes at 400 °C, and fully converts to Li2CO3, MnO, and Ni-Co alloy at 550 °C within 30 min, using a 1.0:0.3 mass ratio of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 to polyethylene terephthalate. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations confirm the preference for O-Li bonding. Surface adsorption and free radical/gaseous reduction reactions explain the role of polyethylene terephthalate in promoting lattice destruction. The complete decomposition facilitates efficient post-treatment, achieving over 99% recovery of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn via water washing. Regenerated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was synthesized by using recovered Li- and transition metal-containing products as feedstocks. This study provided a chemical-free, energy-saving, and scalable recovery strategy while addressing polyethylene terephthalate waste minimization.

Construction of 3D lithium metal anode using bi-functional composite separator: a new approach for lithium battery.

Project description:With the increasing use of Li batteries for storage, their safety issues and energy densities are attracting considerable attention. The Li metal battery (LMB) with limited capacity in the Li metal anode is one of ideal high energy-density systems due to eliminating the use of traditional anode, elevating the energy density of battery and reducing production costs. However, the side reactions between the electrolyte and metallic Li and the irreversible loss of lithium resources caused by the generation of "dead Li" will directly lead to the loss of battery capacity during the cycling process. Therefore, the cycle life of the LMB with limited capacity in the Li metal anode faces significant challenges. Herein, a bi-functional manganese oxide (MnO)/polypropylene/Li1+xAlxTi2-x(PO4)3 (LATP) composite separator is designed to construct a stable three dimensional (3D) Li metal in the surface of Cu foil for LMB. The MnO can dissolve in electrolytes with low concentration, which can be reduced to produce Mn and Li2O, functioning as nucleating seeds to induce sheet-like Li deposition. The sustainably released MnO also involves in the formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, which can be repaired promptly once damaged by the volume expansion of Li. The LATP coating layer is in situ transferred onto the sheet-like Li, acting as an artificial SEI layer for further protection. The constructed 3D Li metal anode with limited capacity shows improved cycle stability in LiFePO4 cell, which shows a capacity retention of 94.5% after 150 cycles. Our strategy, constructing stable 3D Li metal anode with bi-functional composite separator, will bring a new inspiration for developing high energy density LMB.

Anomalous metal segregation in lithium-rich material provides design rules for stable cathode in lithium-ion battery.

Project description:Despite the importance of studying the instability of delithiated cathode materials, it remains difficult to underpin the degradation mechanism of lithium-rich cathode materials due to the complication of combined chemical and structural evolutions. Herein, we use state-of-the-art electron microscopy tools, in conjunction with synchrotron X-ray techniques and first-principle calculations to study a 4d-element-containing compound, Li2Ru0.5Mn0.5O3. We find surprisingly, after cycling, ruthenium segregates out as metallic nanoclusters on the reconstructed surface. Our calculations show that the unexpected ruthenium metal segregation is due to its thermodynamic insolubility in the oxygen deprived surface. This insolubility can disrupt the reconstructed surface, which explains the formation of a porous structure in this material. This work reveals the importance of studying the thermodynamic stability of the reconstructed film on the cathode materials and offers a theoretical guidance for choosing manganese substituting elements in lithium-rich as well as stoichiometric layer-layer compounds for stabilizing the cathode surface.

Dendrite-Free and Stable Lithium Metal Battery Achieved by a Model of Stepwise Lithium Deposition and Stripping.

Project description:HighlightsA facile method is adopted to obtain cucumber-like lithiophilic composite skeleton. Massive lithiophilic sites in cucumber-like lithiophilic composite skeleton can promote and guide uniform Li depositions. A unique model of stepwise Li deposition and stripping is determined. The uncontrolled formation of lithium (Li) dendrites and the unnecessary consumption of electrolyte during the Li plating/stripping process have been major obstacles in developing safe and stable Li metal batteries. Herein, we report a cucumber-like lithiophilic composite skeleton (CLCS) fabricated through a facile oxidation-immersion-reduction method. The stepwise Li deposition and stripping, determined using in situ Raman spectra during the galvanostatic Li charging/discharging process, promote the formation of a dendrite-free Li metal anode. Furthermore, numerous pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, and CuxN sites with excellent lithiophilicity work synergistically to distribute Li ions and suppress the formation of Li dendrites. Owing to these advantages, cells based on CLCS exhibit a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.3% for 700 cycles and an improved lifespan of 2000 h for symmetric cells. The full cells assembled with LiFePO4 (LFP), SeS2 cathodes and CLCS@Li anodes demonstrate high capacities of 110.1 mAh g-1 after 600 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 in CLCS@Li|LFP and 491.8 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1 in CLCS@Li|SeS2. The unique design of CLCS may accelerate the application of Li metal anodes in commercial Li metal batteries.
