Project description:Using a micro-focused high-energy X-ray beam, we have performed in situ time-resolved depth profiling during the electrochemical deposition of Sn into an ordered porous anodic alumina template. Combined with micro-diffraction we are able to follow the variation of the structure at the atomic scale as a function of depth and time. We show that Sn initially deposits at the bottom of the pores, and forms metallic nanopillars with a preferred [100] orientation and a relatively low mosaicity. The lattice strain is found to differ from previous ex situ measurements where the Sn had been removed from the porous support. The dendritic nature of the pore bottom affects the Sn growth mode and results in a variation of Sn grain size, strain and mosaicity. Such atomic scale information of nano-templated materials during electrodeposition may improve the future fabrication of devices.

Project description:Narrow-bandgap CsSn x Pb1-x I3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) show great promise for optoelectronic applications owing to their reduced use of toxic Pb, improved phase stability, and tunable band gaps in the visible and near-infrared range. The use of small ions has been proven beneficial in enhancing the stability and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of perovskite QDs. The introduction of sodium (Na) has succeeded in boosting the PLQY of CsSn0.6Pb0.4I3 QDs. Unfortunately, the initial PLQY of the Na-doped QDs undergoes a fast degradation after one-day storage in solution, hindering their practical applications. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we study the effect of Na ions on the strength of surface bonds, defect formation energies, and the interactions between surface ligands and perovskite QDs. Our results suggest that Na ions enhance the covalent bonding of surface tin-iodine bonds and form strong ionic bonding with the neighboring iodine anions, thus suppressing the formation of I and Sn vacancies. Furthermore, Na ions also enhance the binding strength of the surface ligands with the perovskite QD surface. However, according to our AIMD simulations, the enhanced surface ligand binding is only effective on a selected surface configuration. While the position of Na ions remains intact on a CsI-terminated surface, they diffuse vigorously on an MI2-terminated surface. As a result, the positive effect of Na vanishes with time, explaining the relatively short lifetime of the experimentally obtained high PLQYs. Our results indicate that engineering the surface termination of the QDs could be the next step in maintaining the favorable effect of Na doping for a high and stable PLQY of Sn-Pb QDs.

Project description:The plasmonic photothermal effects of metal nanostructures have recently become a new priority of studies in the field of nano-optics. Controllable plasmonic nanostructures with a wide range of responses are crucial for effective photothermal effects and their applications. In this work, self-assembled aluminum nano-islands (Al NIs) with a thin alumina layer are designed as a plasmonic photothermal structure to achieve nanocrystal transformation via multi-wavelength excitation. The plasmonic photothermal effects can be controlled by the thickness of the Al2O3 and the intensity and wavelength of the laser illumination. In addition, Al NIs with an alumina layer have good photothermal conversion efficiency even in low temperature environments, and the efficiency will not decline significantly after storage in air for 3 months. Such an inexpensive Al/Al2O3 structure with a multi-wavelength response provides an efficient platform for rapid nanocrystal transformation and a potential application for the wide-band absorption of solar energy.

Project description:High purity hydrogen and solid-state byproducts are produced using a proposed plasma-activated aluminum and water reactions approach. These byproducts could be transformed into pure gamma Al2O3 powder material, while hydrogen can be used for electricity generation. Various chemical methods can be used for the synthesis of gamma alumina, but most could result in high levels of remaining impurities. Boehmite is a cost-effective starting material for the production of high-purity Al2O3. Herein, we present a novel method for the synthesis of boehmite and its transformation into high-specific-surface-area ?-alumina. Specifically, this method implicates the direct reaction between distilled water and plasma-treated aluminum powder. The results show the structural and morphological changes of the byproduct of the aluminum/water reaction to boehmite and ?-Al2O3 after a simple heating procedure (at 280 and 500 °C respectively). The high-purity hydrogen produced during the aluminum/water reaction can be used for the high-efficiency and environmentally friendly production of electrical energy.

Project description:The complete elimination of methylammonium (MA) cations in Sn-Pb composites can extend their light and thermal stabilities. Unfortunately, MA-free Sn-Pb alloyed perovskite thin films suffer from wrinkled surfaces and poor crystallization, due to the coexistence of mixed intermediate phases. Here, we report an additive strategy for finely regulating the impurities in the intermediate phase of Cs0.25FA0.75Pb0.6Sn0.4I3 and, thereby, obtaining high-performance solar cells. We introduced d-homoserine lactone hydrochloride (D-HLH) to form hydrogen bonds and strong Pb-O/Sn-O bonds with perovskite precursors, thereby weakening the incomplete complexation effect between polar aprotic solvents (e.g., DMSO) and organic (FAI) or inorganic (CsI, PbI2, and SnI2) components, and balancing their nucleation processes. This treatment completely transformed mixed intermediate phases into pure preformed perovskite nuclei prior to thermal annealing. Besides, this D-HLH substantially inhibited the oxidation of Sn2+ species. This strategy generated a record efficiency of 21.61%, with a Voc of 0.88 V for an MA-free Sn-Pb device, and an efficiency of 23.82% for its tandem device. The unencapsulated devices displayed impressive thermal stability at 85 °C for 300 h and much improved continuous operation stability at MPP for 120 h.

Project description:Single crystals of a Na-Ga-Si clathrate, Na8Ga5.70Si40.30, of size 2.9 mm were grown via the evaporation of Na from a Na-Ga-Si melt with the molar ratio of Na : Ga : Si = 4 : 1 : 2 at 773 K for 21 h under an Ar atmosphere. The crystal structure was analyzed using X-ray diffraction with the model of the type-I clathrate (cubic, a = 10.3266(2) Å, space group Pm3̄n, no. 223). By adding Sn to a Na-Ga-Si melt (Na : Ga : Si : Sn = 6 : 1 : 2 : 1), single crystals of Na8Ga x Si46-x (x = 4.94-5.52, a = 10.3020(2)-10.3210(3) Å), with the maximum size of 3.7 mm, were obtained via Na evaporation at 723-873 K. The electrical resistivities of Na8Ga5.70Si40.30 and Na8Ga4.94Si41.06 were 1.40 and 0.72 mΩ cm, respectively, at 300 K, and metallic temperature dependences of the resistivities were observed. In the Si L2,3 soft X-ray emission spectrum of Na8Ga5.70Si40.30, a weak peak originating from the lowest conduction band in the undoped Si46 was observed at an emission energy of 98 eV.

Project description:The phase assembly and microstructure of the aluminum-incorporated CaO-SiO2-H2O system, which is technologically important in autoclaved building materials, catalysis and waste management, were investigated using XRD, SEM, FTIR and NMR depending on aluminum addition, reaction temperature and curing time. The content of each phase was obtained using the MAUD program based on the Rietveld refinement. The results revealed that the formation of the tobermorite phase was promoted at Al/(Al + Si) ≤ 0.03, and subsequently retarded by higher aluminum addition, which was corroborated by the presence of more low polymerized and cross-linked (alumino)silicate chains. The phase purity decreased with increasing aluminum addition. Aluminum changed the morphology of tobermorite from plate-like to lath-like and fibrous. About a quarter of the (alumino)silicate chains in the C-S-H structure were linked though a [triple bond, length as m-dash]Si-O-Al[triple bond, length as m-dash] configuration, and this proportion was almost independent of aluminum addition. Furthermore, only Al[4] substituted for silicon in the aluminum incorporated C-S-H, while Al[6] just exited in the hydrogarnet phase. This work is beneficial for understanding the implication on micro-properties of by-products or admixtures containing aluminum in concrete.

Project description:There is a growing interest in extending plasmonics applications into the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Noble metals are commonly used in plasmonic, but their intrinsic optical properties limit their use above 350 nm. Aluminum is probably the most suitable material for UV plasmonics, and in this work we fabricated substrates of nanoporous aluminum starting from an alloy of Al2Mg3. The porous metal is obtained by means of a galvanic replacement reaction. Such nanoporous metal can be exploited to achieve a plasmonic material suitable for enhanced UV Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence. Thanks to the large surface to volume ratio, this material represents a powerful platform for promoting interaction between plasmonic substrates and molecules in the UV.

Project description:Amorphous silica-aluminas (ASAs) are important solid catalysts and supports for many industrially essential and sustainable processes, such as hydrocarbon transformation and biorefining. However, the wide distribution of acid strength on ASAs often results in undesired side reactions, lowering the product selectivity. Here we developed a strategy for the synthesis of a unique class of ASAs with unvarying strength of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) and Lewis acid sites (LAS) using double-flame-spray pyrolysis. Structural characterization using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed that the uniform acidity is due to a distinct nanostructure, characterized by a uniform interface of silica-alumina and homogeneously dispersed alumina domains. The BAS population density of as-prepared ASAs is up to 6 times higher than that obtained by classical methods. The BAS/LAS ratio, as well as the population densities of BAS and LAS of these ASAs, could be tuned in a broad range. In cyclohexanol dehydration, the uniform Brønsted acid strength provides a high selectivity to cyclohexene and a nearly linear correlation between acid site densities and cyclohexanol conversion. Moreover, the concerted action of these BAS and LAS leads to an excellent bifunctional Brønsted-Lewis acid catalyst for glucose dehydration, affording a superior 5-hydroxymethylfurfural yield.

Project description:Ordered mesoporous Zn/Al2O3 materials with varying Zn content were simply prepared via an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method. Dehydrogenation of isobutane to isobutene was carried out on these materials; an isobutane conversion of 45.0% and isobutene yield of 39.0% were obtained over the 10%Zn/Al2O3 catalyst at 580 °C with 300 h-1 GHSV. The obtained materials with Zn content up to 10% possess large specific surface area and big pore volume and zinc species can be highly dispersed on the surface or incorporated into the framework. The acidity of these catalysts was changed by the introduction of Zn, the decrease of strong acid sites is conducive to the promotion of isobutene selectivity and the weak and medium acidic sites played an important role in isobutane conversion. In addition, these catalysts exhibited good catalytic stability, due to the effective inhibition of coke formation by the ordered mesoporous structure.
