Project description:Humans no doubt use language to communicate about their emotional experiences, but does language in turn help humans understand emotions, or is language just a vehicle of communication? This study used a form of artificial intelligence (AI) known as large language models (LLMs) to assess whether language-based representations of emotion causally contribute to the AI's ability to generate inferences about the emotional meaning of novel situations. Fourteen attributes of human emotion concept representation were found to be represented by the LLM's distinct artificial neuron populations. By manipulating these attribute-related neurons, we in turn demonstrated the role of emotion concept knowledge in generative emotion inference. The attribute-specific performance deterioration was related to the importance of different attributes in human mental space. Our findings provide a proof-in-concept that even an LLM can learn about emotions in the absence of sensory-motor representations and highlight the contribution of language-derived emotion-concept knowledge for emotion inference.

Project description:How do people represent their own and others' emotional experiences? Contemporary emotion theories and growing evidence suggest that the conceptual representation of emotion plays a central role in how people understand the emotions both they and other people feel.1-6 Although decades of research indicate that adults typically represent emotion concepts as multidimensional, with valence (positive-negative) and arousal (activating-deactivating) as two primary dimensions,7-10 little is known about how this bidimensional (or circumplex) representation arises.11 Here we show that emotion representations develop from a monodimensional focus on valence to a bidimensional focus on both valence and arousal from age 6 to age 25. We investigated potential mechanisms underlying this effect and found that increasing verbal knowledge mediated emotion representation development over and above three other potential mediators: (i) fluid reasoning, (ii) the general ability to represent non-emotional stimuli bidimensionally, and (iii) task-related behaviors (e.g., using extreme ends of rating scales). These results suggest that verbal development facilitates the expansion of emotion concept representations (and potentially emotional experiences) from a "positive or negative" dichotomy in childhood to a multidimensional organization in adulthood.

Project description:Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) is a major global health challenge, disproportionately affecting low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs). The World Health Organization (WHO) generates guidance to address the problem. Here, we explore the extent to which guidance and related knowledge are generated by experts living in the most-affected countries and consider the results in the context of the movement to decolonize global health. We examined the composition of World Health Organization (WHO) MDR/RR-TB treatment Guideline Development Groups (GDGs) from 2016 to 2022. We classified GDG members according to the MDR/RR-TB burden and World Bank income level of the country of their institutional affiliation. We also searched PubMed to identify peer-reviewed publications from 2016 to 2023 which emanated from individual-patient-data meta-analysis like those done for Guideline review, and classified the publication authors according to the same indicators. There were 33 high-burden MDR/RR-TB countries during the time period. Of these, 72.1% were LLMICs and none was high-income. In contrast, only 30.3% of WHO GDG members and 10.4% of peer-reviewed publication authors were from LLMICs. Representatives from high-MDR/RR-TB-burden countries comprised 34.3% of WHO GDG members and 14.7% of authors of guideline-related publications. The important imbalance between the geographical distribution of lived experience with MDR/RR-TB and the distribution of individuals generating knowledge and guidance on treatment of MDR/RR-TB can have clinical and resource implications. Countries may reject or defer guideline adoption because of a mismatch between that guidance and local disease epidemiology. Funding conditioned on compliance with guidelines can exacerbate health inequalities. The movement to decolonize global health considers representation disparities as epistemic injustice, that is unfair treatment in the process of generating, sharing, or receiving knowledge. Reform is possible in many of the institutions involved in generation of global health knowledge, such as: meaningful participation of LLMICs in projects as a requirement for research funding, improved attention to the epistemic and geographical location of journal editorial staff, and broader inclusion in guidelines committees. Better alignment of participation in knowledge generation with burden of disease holds potential for reducing inequality and improving relevance of guidance for the lived experience with MDR/RR-TB.

Project description:Speech emotion recognition (SER) plays an important role in global business today to improve service efficiency. In the literature of SER, many techniques have been using deep learning to extract and learn features. Recently, we have proposed end-to-end learning for a deep residual local feature learning block (DeepResLFLB). The advantages of end-to-end learning are low engineering effort and less hyperparameter tuning. Nevertheless, this learning method is easily to fall into an overfitting problem. Therefore, this paper described the concept of the "verify-to-classify" framework to apply for learning vectors, extracted from feature spaces of emotional information. This framework consists of two important portions: speech emotion learning and recognition. In speech emotion learning, consisting of two steps: speech emotion verification enrolled training and prediction, the residual learning (ResNet) with squeeze-excitation (SE) block was used as a core component of both steps to extract emotional state vectors and build an emotion model by the speech emotion verification enrolled training. Then the in-domain pre-trained weights of the emotion trained model are transferred to the prediction step. As a result of the speech emotion learning, the accepted model-validated by EER-is transferred to the speech emotion recognition in terms of out-domain pre-trained weights, which are ready for classification using a classical ML method. In this manner, a suitable loss function is important to work with emotional vectors. Here, two loss functions were proposed: angular prototypical and softmax with angular prototypical losses. Based on two publicly available datasets: Emo-DB and RAVDESS, both with high- and low-quality environments. The experimental results show that our proposed method can significantly improve generalized performance and explainable emotion results, when evaluated by standard metrics: EER, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score.

Project description:Humans reliably categorize configurations of facial actions into specific emotion categories, leading some to argue that this process is invariant between individuals and cultures. However, growing behavioral evidence suggests that factors such as emotion-concept knowledge may shape the way emotions are visually perceived, leading to variability-rather than universality-in facial-emotion perception. Understanding variability in emotion perception is only emerging, and the neural basis of any impact from the structure of emotion-concept knowledge remains unknown. In a neuroimaging study, we used a representational similarity analysis (RSA) approach to measure the correspondence between the conceptual, perceptual, and neural representational structures of the six emotion categories Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, and Surprise. We found that subjects exhibited individual differences in their conceptual structure of emotions, which predicted their own unique perceptual structure. When viewing faces, the representational structure of multivoxel patterns in the right fusiform gyrus was significantly predicted by a subject's unique conceptual structure, even when controlling for potential physical similarity in the faces themselves. Finally, cross-cultural differences in emotion perception were also observed, which could be explained by individual differences in conceptual structure. Our results suggest that the representational structure of emotion expressions in visual face-processing regions may be shaped by idiosyncratic conceptual understanding of emotion categories.

Project description:Humans express emotions through various modalities such as facial expressions and natural language. However, the relationships between emotions expressed through different modalities and their correlations with neural activities remain uncertain. Here, we aimed to unveil some of these uncertainties by investigating the similarity of emotion representations across modalities and brain regions. First, we represented various emotion categories as multi-dimensional vectors derived from visual (face), linguistic, and visio-linguistic data, and used representational similarity analysis to compare these modalities. Second, we examined the linear transferability of emotion representation from other modalities to the visual modality. Third, we compared the representational structure derived in the first step with those from brain activities across 360 regions. Our findings revealed that emotion representations share commonalities across modalities with modality-type dependent variations, and they can be linearly mapped from other modalities to the visual modality. Additionally, emotion representations in uni-modalities showed relatively higher similarity with specific brain regions, while multi-modal emotion representation was most similar to representations across the entire brain region. These findings suggest that emotional experiences are represented differently across various brain regions with varying degrees of similarity to different modality types, and that they may be multi-modally conveyable in visual and linguistic domains.

Project description:Emotion recognition from speech has its fair share of applications and consequently extensive research has been done over the past few years in this interesting field. However, many of the existing solutions aren't yet ready for real time applications. In this work, we propose a compact representation of audio using conventional autoencoders for dimensionality reduction, and test the approach on two benchmark publicly available datasets. Such compact and simple classification systems where the computing cost is low and memory is managed efficiently may be more useful for real time application. System is evaluated on the Ryerson Audio-Visual Database of Emotional Speech and Song (RAVDESS) and the Toronto Emotional Speech Set (TESS). Three classifiers, namely, support vector machines (SVM), decision tree classifier, and convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been implemented to judge the impact of the approach. The results obtained by attempting classification with Alexnet and Resnet50 are also reported. Observations proved that this introduction of autoencoders indeed can improve the classification accuracy of the emotion in the input audio files. It can be concluded that in emotion recognition from speech, the choice and application of dimensionality reduction of audio features impacts the results that are achieved and therefore, by working on this aspect of the general speech emotion recognition model, it may be possible to make great improvements in the future.

Project description:We present a framework for the topological and semantic assembly of multiscale physiology route maps. The framework, called ApiNATOMY, consists of a knowledge representation (KR) model and a set of knowledge management (KM) tools. Using examples of ApiNATOMY route maps, we present a KR format that is suitable for the analysis and visualization by KM tools. The conceptual KR model provides a simple method for physiology experts to capture process interactions among anatomical entities. In this paper, we outline the KR model, modeling format, and the KM procedures to translate concise abstraction-based specifications into fully instantiated models of physiology processes.

Project description:MotivationBiological data and knowledge bases increasingly rely on Semantic Web technologies and the use of knowledge graphs for data integration, retrieval and federated queries. In the past years, feature learning methods that are applicable to graph-structured data are becoming available, but have not yet widely been applied and evaluated on structured biological knowledge. Results: We develop a novel method for feature learning on biological knowledge graphs. Our method combines symbolic methods, in particular knowledge representation using symbolic logic and automated reasoning, with neural networks to generate embeddings of nodes that encode for related information within knowledge graphs. Through the use of symbolic logic, these embeddings contain both explicit and implicit information. We apply these embeddings to the prediction of edges in the knowledge graph representing problems of function prediction, finding candidate genes of diseases, protein-protein interactions, or drug target relations, and demonstrate performance that matches and sometimes outperforms traditional approaches based on manually crafted features. Project description:Pairwise contact energies do not explicitly take protein secondary structure into account, and so provide an incomplete description of conformational energy. In order to construct a Hamiltonian that specifically relates to protein backbone conformations, a simplified backbone angle is used. The pseudodihedral angle (the torsion angle between planes defined by 4 consecutive alpha-carbon atoms) provides a simplified backbone representation and continues to manifest information about secondary-structure elements: the pseudo-Ramachandran plot contains helical and sheetlike regions. The distribution of pseudodihedral angles is highly sensitive to the identity of the central pair of amino acids. Therefore, a sequence-dependent, knowledge-based potential energy was found according to a quasichemical approximation. These functions form complementary additions to the contact potentials currently in use. This pseudodihedral potential greatly enhances the ability to design sequences that are specific to a given conformation and also improves the ability to discriminate a native conformation from many other conformations.
