Confidence interval estimation of the common mean of several gamma populations.

ABSTRACT: Gamma distributions are widely used in applied fields due to its flexibility of accommodating right-skewed data. Although inference methods for a single gamma mean have been well studied, research on the common mean of several gamma populations are sparse. This paper addresses the problem of confidence interval estimation of the common mean of several gamma populations using the concept of generalized inference and the method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER). Simulation studies demonstrate that several proposed approaches can provide confidence intervals with satisfying coverage probabilities even at small sample sizes. The proposed methods are illustrated using two examples.

Confidence interval estimation for the difference of censored zero-inflated gamma distributions.

Project description:This paper studies the problem of constructing confidence intervals (CIs) for the difference between coefficients of variation (CV) of two censored zero-inflated gamma distributions. Firstly, we propose a Fiducial inference based method that extends the traditional CI construction method of gamma distribution to the scenario of zero-inflated gamma distributions with censored data. Secondly, we propose a Box-Cox transformation based method, in which not only the sample data needs to be transformed, but also the detection limit of gamma distribution with censored data accordingly. Thirdly, we investigate the Method of Variance Estimate Recovery (MOVER), to combine the previous two gamma distribution CI estimates with three binomial distribution CI estimates, and obtain six combination methods. Furthermore, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the performances of the proposed methods, the results indicate that all CI construction methods achieve satisfactory performances in terms of coverage probability, average length and tail error rates. Finally, we perform real data analysis using 11 years of precipitation data from Zhengzhou and Lhasa.

Estimating average wind speed in Thailand using confidence intervals for common mean of several Weibull distributions.

Project description:The Weibull distribution has been used to analyze data from many fields, including engineering, survival and lifetime analysis, and weather forecasting, particularly wind speed data. It is useful to measure the central tendency of wind speed data in specific locations using statistical parameters for instance the mean to accurately forecast the severity of future catastrophic events. In particular, the common mean of several independent wind speed samples collected from different locations is a useful statistic. To explore wind speed data from several areas in Surat Thani province, a large province in southern Thailand, we constructed estimates of the confidence interval for the common mean of several Weibull distributions using the Bayesian equitailed confidence interval and the highest posterior density interval using the gamma prior. Their performances are compared with those of the generalized confidence interval and the adjusted method of variance estimates recovery based on their coverage probabilities and expected lengths. The results demonstrate that when the common mean is small and the sample size is large, the Bayesian highest posterior density interval performed the best since its coverage probabilities were higher than the nominal confidence level and it provided the shortest expected lengths. Moreover, the generalized confidence interval performed well in some scenarios whereas adjusted method of variance estimates recovery did not. The approaches were used to estimate the common mean of real wind speed datasets from several areas in Surat Thani province, Thailand, fitted to Weibull distributions. These results support the simulation results in that the Bayesian methods performed the best. Hence, the Bayesian highest posterior density interval is the most appropriate method for establishing the confidence interval for the common mean of several Weibull distributions.

Confidence interval estimation in R-DAS.

Project description:BackgroundRoughly 25 years ago, the United States National Institute on Drug Abuse (US NIDA) initiated the creation of public use datasets for its National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, since re-named the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which assumed responsibility for the survey in 1992, has continued and expanded this effort to make the survey data available to researchers. During 2012, SAMHSA created a "Restricted-Use Data Analysis System" (R-DAS) to provide researchers with the capability to create tabulations using restricted NSDUH variables not otherwise available on the public-use files.MethodsThis methods focused article is intended to help potential users of R-DAS-like online data analysis systems by (i) clarifying statistical issues involving approximation of confidence intervals (CI), (ii) providing a way to estimate CI when tabular output is suppressed with an 'error message' based on confidentiality restrictions, and (iii) showing how to make pairwise comparisons of estimates not otherwise allowed.ResultsFor illustration purposes, some empirical estimates are presented on a topic of continuing of public health concern in the US namely, extra-medical use of pain relievers (generally opioids), where the drugs are being used to get high and otherwise outside the boundaries intended by prescribing clinicians.ConclusionThe R-DAS makes it possible to derive state-level estimates of male-female and age-related differences in incidence of extra-medical prescription pain reliever (EMPPR) use, not previously reported in peer-reviewed articles, and not available without research approaches described here.

Estimating the average daily rainfall in Thailand using confidence intervals for the common mean of several delta-lognormal distributions.

Project description:The daily average natural rainfall amounts in the five regions of Thailand can be estimated using the confidence intervals for the common mean of several delta-lognormal distributions based on the fiducial generalized confidence interval (FGCI), large sample (LS), method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER), parametric bootstrap (PB), and highest posterior density intervals based on Jeffreys' rule (HPD-JR) and normal-gamma-beta (HPD-NGB) priors. Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to assess the performance in terms of the coverage probability and average length of the proposed methods. The numerical results indicate that MOVER and PB provided better performances than the other methods in a variety of situations, even when the sample case was large. The efficacies of the proposed methods were illustrated by applying them to real rainfall datasets from the five regions of Thailand.

Computationally efficient permutation-based confidence interval estimation for tail-area FDR.

Project description:Challenges of satisfying parametric assumptions in genomic settings with thousands or millions of tests have led investigators to combine powerful False Discovery Rate (FDR) approaches with computationally expensive but exact permutation testing. We describe a computationally efficient permutation-based approach that includes a tractable estimator of the proportion of true null hypotheses, the variance of the log of tail-area FDR, and a confidence interval (CI) estimator, which accounts for the number of permutations conducted and dependencies between tests. The CI estimator applies a binomial distribution and an overdispersion parameter to counts of positive tests. The approach is general with regards to the distribution of the test statistic, it performs favorably in comparison to other approaches, and reliable FDR estimates are demonstrated with as few as 10 permutations. An application of this approach to relate sleep patterns to gene expression patterns in mouse hypothalamus yielded a set of 11 transcripts associated with 24 h REM sleep [FDR = 0.15 (0.08, 0.26)]. Two of the corresponding genes, Sfrp1 and Sfrp4, are involved in wnt signaling and several others, Irf7, Ifit1, Iigp2, and Ifih1, have links to interferon signaling. These genes would have been overlooked had a typical a priori FDR threshold such as 0.05 or 0.1 been applied. The CI provides the flexibility for choosing a significance threshold based on tolerance for false discoveries and precision of the FDR estimate. That is, it frees the investigator to use a more data-driven approach to define significance, such as the minimum estimated FDR, an option that is especially useful for weak effects, often observed in studies of complex diseases.

A self-normalized confidence interval for the mean of a class of nonstationary processes.

Project description:We construct an asymptotic confidence interval for the mean of a class of nonstationary processes with constant mean and time-varying variances. Due to the large number of unknown parameters, traditional approaches based on consistent estimation of the limiting variance of sample mean through moving block or non-overlapping block methods are not applicable. Under a block-wise asymptotically equal cumulative variance assumption, we propose a self-normalized confidence interval that is robust against the nonstationarity and dependence structure of the data. We also apply the same idea to construct an asymptotic confidence interval for the mean difference of nonstationary processes with piecewise constant means. The proposed methods are illustrated through simulations and an application to global temperature series.

Empirical confidence interval calibration for population-level effect estimation studies in observational healthcare data.

Project description:Observational healthcare data, such as electronic health records and administrative claims, offer potential to estimate effects of medical products at scale. Observational studies have often been found to be nonreproducible, however, generating conflicting results even when using the same database to answer the same question. One source of discrepancies is error, both random caused by sampling variability and systematic (for example, because of confounding, selection bias, and measurement error). Only random error is typically quantified but converges to zero as databases become larger, whereas systematic error persists independent from sample size and therefore, increases in relative importance. Negative controls are exposure-outcome pairs, where one believes no causal effect exists; they can be used to detect multiple sources of systematic error, but interpreting their results is not always straightforward. Previously, we have shown that an empirical null distribution can be derived from a sample of negative controls and used to calibrate P values, accounting for both random and systematic error. Here, we extend this work to calibration of confidence intervals (CIs). CIs require positive controls, which we synthesize by modifying negative controls. We show that our CI calibration restores nominal characteristics, such as 95% coverage of the true effect size by the 95% CI. We furthermore show that CI calibration reduces disagreement in replications of two pairs of conflicting observational studies: one related to dabigatran, warfarin, and gastrointestinal bleeding and one related to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. We recommend CI calibration to improve reproducibility of observational studies.

Confidence interval estimation of the difference between two sensitivities to the early disease stage.

Project description:Although most of the statistical methods for diagnostic studies focus on disease processes with binary disease status, many diseases can be naturally classified into three ordinal diagnostic categories, that is normal, early stage, and fully diseased. For such diseases, the volume under the ROC surface (VUS) is the most commonly used index of diagnostic accuracy. Because the early disease stage is most likely the optimal time window for therapeutic intervention, the sensitivity to the early diseased stage has been suggested as another diagnostic measure. For the purpose of comparing the diagnostic abilities on early disease detection between two markers, it is of interest to estimate the confidence interval of the difference between sensitivities to the early diseased stage. In this paper, we present both parametric and non-parametric methods for this purpose. An extensive simulation study is carried out for a variety of settings for the purpose of evaluating and comparing the performance of the proposed methods. A real example of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is analyzed using the proposed approaches.

Using Confidence Interval-Based Estimation of Relevance to Select Social-Cognitive Determinants for Behavior Change Interventions.

Project description:When developing an intervention aimed at behavior change, one of the crucial steps in the development process is to select the most relevant social-cognitive determinants. These determinants can be seen as the buttons one needs to push to establish behavior change. Insight into these determinants is needed to select behavior change methods (i.e., general behavior change techniques that are applied in an intervention) in the development process. Therefore, a study on determinants is often conducted as formative research in the intervention development process. Ideally, all relevant determinants identified in such a study are addressed by an intervention. However, when developing a behavior change intervention, there are limits in terms of, for example, resources available for intervention development and the amount of content that participants of an intervention can be exposed to. Hence, it is important to select those determinants that are most relevant to the target behavior as these determinants should be addressed in an intervention. The aim of the current paper is to introduce a novel approach to select the most relevant social-cognitive determinants and use them in intervention development. This approach is based on visualization of confidence intervals for the means and correlation coefficients for all determinants simultaneously. This visualization facilitates comparison, which is necessary when making selections. By means of a case study on the determinants of using a high dose of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (commonly known as ecstasy), we illustrate this approach. We provide a freely available tool to facilitate the analyses needed in this approach.

Project description:The data presented in this article are related to the article titled "Molecular Dynamics as a tool for in silico screening of skin permeability" (Rocco et al., 2017) [1]. Knowledge of the confidence interval and maximum theoretical value of the correlation coefficient r can prove useful to estimate the reliability of developed predictive models, in particular when there is great variability in compiled experimental datasets. In this Data in Brief article, data from purposely designed numerical simulations are presented to show how much the maximum r value is worsened by increasing the data uncertainty. The corresponding confidence interval of r is determined by using the Fisher r→Z transform.
