Trichomoniasis, the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection worldwide, is caused by the protozoon <i>Trichomonas vaginalis.</i> The 5- nitroimidazole drugs, of which metronidazole is the most prescribed, are the only effective drugs to treat trichomoniasis.
