The complete mitochondrial genome of Leptomantella tonkinae (Hebard, 1920) (Mantodea: Leptomantellidae) and its phylogeny.

ABSTRACT: The complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of Leptomantella tonkinae (Hebard, 1920) was 15,527 bp in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and one control region. The gene arrangement of mt genome of L. tonkinae was identical to the primitive mantis. The overall AT content of the mt genome was 74%. In ML and BI phylogenetic analyses, the monophyly of Leptomantellidae was robustly supported and the clade of Leptomantellidae is a sister clade to the group of (Gonypetidae+(Leptomantellidae+(Amorphoscelidae+Nanomantidae))).

Project description:The mitochondrial genome sequence of Xanthomantis bimaculata (Mantodea: Iridopterygidae) from Yunnan, China is a circular molecule with the typical insect mitochondrial gene arrangement, which is 15,941 bp in length and contains 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes, and one control region. The overall AT content of the mitogenome is 73.12% (A = 37.58%, T = 35.54%, C = 16.54%, G = 10.34%). In BI and ML phylogenetic analyses, X. bimaculata was a sister clade to Sceptuchus simplex. The monophyly of the families Iridopterygidae, Thespidae and Liturgusidae were supported.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Mantis religiosa (Mantodea: Mantidae) from Canada and its phylogeny.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Mantis religiosa (Mantodea: Mantidae) from Canada was successfully sequenced. The mitochondrial genome was a circular molecule of 15,521 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, 23 tRNA genes (including an extra tRNAArg gene), and the control region. The AT content of the whole genome was 76.9% and the length of the control region was 636 bp with 81.9% AT content. The structure of the M. religiosa mitochondrial genome from Canada was almost identical to M. religiosa from China and their genetic distance was just 0.017. In Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses, we found that M. religiosa was a sister clade to Statilia sp. and the monophyly of the genera Hierodula and Rhombodera was not supported.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Psychomantis borneensis (Mantodea: Hymenopodidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Psychomantis borneensis (Mantodea: Hymenopodidae) was successfully sequenced. The mitochondrial genome is found to be 15,493 bp long and is a circular molecule containing 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs), typically found in other mantis mitochondrial genomes. The AT content of the whole genome was 72.4% and the length of the control region was 697 bp with 79.9% AT content. A phylogenetic tree was constructed based on the BI and ML analysis of 16 species of Mantodea. The results showed that P. borneensis was a sister clade to (Anaxarcha zhengi + Creobroter gemmata) (Hymenopodidae). The monophyly of the family Mantidae and the genus Theopompa, Hierodula, and Rhombodera were not supported. The outcome of this study will provide a useful data for population genetics studies as well as serve as a tool for better characterizing phylogenetic analysis of Mantodea.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the Statilia maculate has been amplified and sequenced in this study. The mitogenome was 15,775bp long with two ribosomal RNA genes, 26 transfer RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, and a non-coding control region, with an A + T-rich characteristic (75.8%). Five identical tandem duplication of trnR were found in mitogenome of S. maculate, similar to the other mantis. According to the phylogenetic analysis, S. maculate had a closer genetic relationship with Statilia sp.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Cylicocyclus ultrajectinus (Ihle, 1920).

Project description:In this study, the mitochondrial genome of Cylicocyclus ultrajectinus (Ihle, 1920) was sequenced for the first time using next-generation sequencing technology, and its compositional characteristics, structure, and phylogenetic relationship with other strongylid nematodes were analyzed by biological software. The results showed that these sequences contained 12 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 2 non-coding regions, all exhibiting a significant AT bias. Phylogenetic studies showed that C. ultrajectinus formed a distinct branch form other Cylicocyclus nematodes. This study contributes to the mitochondrial genome database of Strongylidae, laying a foundation for genetic variation, molecular classification, and evolutionary studies of strongylid nematodes.

The phylogenetic analysis included 18 species within 10 families of Mantodea using maximum likelihood (ML) method. The result showed that A. pallida is sister to Haania sp., both of which form a sister clade with Caliris sp.

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of the praying mantis Mekongomantis quinquespinosa (Mantodea, Mantidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the praying mantises Mekongomantis quinquespinosa was characterized in this study. The circular molecule is 15388 bp in length (GenBank accession no. MN267041), containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. The nucleotide composition is asymmetric (39.0% A, 15.8% C, 9.8% G, 35.4% T), with an overall A + T content of 74.4%. The gene arrangement of M. quinquespinosa is identical to that observed in other Mantidae family praying mantises. Ten reading frame overlaps and seven intergenic regions are found in the mitogenome of M. quinquespinosa. The phylogenetic relationships based on 13 PCGs show that M. quinquespinosa clusters closest to the species of Mantidae.

Complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of Pleistocene mammoth Mammuthus primigenius.

Project description:Phylogenetic relationships between the extinct woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), and the Asian (Elephas maximus) and African savanna (Loxodonta africana) elephants remain unresolved. Here, we report the sequence of the complete mitochondrial genome (16,842 base pairs) of a woolly mammoth extracted from permafrost-preserved remains from the Pleistocene epoch--the oldest mitochondrial genome sequence determined to date. We demonstrate that well-preserved mitochondrial genome fragments, as long as approximately 1,600-1700 base pairs, can be retrieved from pre-Holocene remains of an extinct species. Phylogenetic reconstruction of the Elephantinae clade suggests that M. primigenius and E. maximus are sister species that diverged soon after their common ancestor split from the L. africana lineage. Low nucleotide diversity found between independently determined mitochondrial genomic sequences of woolly mammoths separated geographically and in time suggests that north-eastern Siberia was occupied by a relatively homogeneous population of M. primigenius throughout the late Pleistocene.

Molecular phylogeny of selected dorid nudibranchs based on complete mitochondrial genome.

Project description:Dorid nudibranchs are a large group of mollusks with approximately 2,000 recorded species. Although agreement exists on the monophyletic nature of the dorid nudibranch group, the interfamily relationships of the suborder are subject to debate. Despite efforts to elucidate this issue using short molecular markers, the conclusiveness of the findings has been hindered by branching polytomy. Mitogenomes are known to be effective markers for use in phylogenetic investigations. In this study, eight mitogenomes of dorid nudibranchs were decoded and analyzed. Gene content and structure showed little change among species, reflecting the conserved mitogenomes of dorid nudibranchs. For most genes, the direction was typical for nudibranchs; nevertheless, tRNACys had an inverse direction in Cadlinidae species. Phylogenetic trees based on nucleotide and amino acid datasets revealed a relatively consistent pattern of interfamily relationships with little difference for positions of Phyllidiidae and Cadlinidae. Species of Cadlinidae were clustered together and did not form a clade with Chromododidae. Additionally, Goniodorididae was sister to Aegiridae, whereas Discodoridae was sister to Dorididae. This finding was supported by tree topology test based on mitogenome data. The results of the present study indicate that complete mitogenomes are promising markers for investigating interfamily relationships among dorid nudibranchs.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Pelecanus crispus and its phylogeny.

Project description:The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), in the order Pelecaniformes, its habitat is distributed in Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is a large waterfowl that is of international concern. In this study, we first sequenced and described the complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of P. crispus. The results showed that the whole genome of P. crispus was 16,131 bp in length, and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosome RNA genes, and one non-coding control region. The overall base composition of the mitochondrial DNA was 30.48% for A, 23.15% for T, 31.68% for C, and 14.69% for G, with a GC content of 46.37%. A phylogenetic tree of P. crispus in Pelecaniformes confirmed that P. crispus was sister to C. occidentalis. This information will be useful in the current understanding of the phylogeny and evolution of Pelecaniformes.
