What topics are women interested in during pregnancy: exploring the role of social media as informational and emotional support.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Social media plays an important role as a source for obtaining or sharing health information. It is frequently used as a resource by pregnant women who seek information and emotional support regarding their physical and role changes. To provide high-quality support for pregnant women, it is important to determine what topics they want information on from social media during their pregnancy, and what effects they expect from each topic. This study investigates what topics pregnant women are interested in according to their stage of pregnancy and need for informational or emotional support from each topic of interest.

Methods

An online survey was conducted with 302 pregnant Korean women. The survey questionnaires included information sources and experience of social media. Along with the questionnaires, they were asked to describe three to ten health topics that they were most interested in in the last two weeks.

Results

Social media (72.85%) and search engines (72.85%) were found to be most frequently used for pregnancy-related health information. The topics of interest slightly differed by stage, but mainly postpartum care, pregnancy symptoms, and daily life issues ranked high. Mood related topics appeared frequently among women in their first trimester or post-partum stage of pregnancy. Informational support was mostly needed for daily life issues, and emotional support needs centered mostly around stories about family and mood during pregnancy.

Conclusions

Pregnant women have different needs for informational or emotional support, depending on their stage of pregnancy and their topics of interest. Therefore, social media support should be delivered with varying content and platforms tailored to women's needs at each trimester.

Project description:BackgroundShorter breastfeeding duration is associated with detrimental consequences for infant health/development and maternal health. Previous studies suggest social support is essential in maintaining breast/chest-feeding and helping to improve general infant feeding experiences. Public health bodies therefore work to support breastfeeding in the UK, yet UK breastfeeding rates continue to be one of the lowest globally. With this, a better understanding of the effectiveness and quality of infant feeding support is required. In the UK, health visitors (community public health nurses specialising in working with families with a child aged 0-5 years) have been positioned as one of the key providers of breast/chest-feeding support. Research evidence suggests that both inadequate informational support and poor/negative emotional support can lead to poor breastfeeding experiences and early breastfeeding cessation. Thus, this study tests the hypothesis that emotional support from health visitors moderates the relationship between informational support and breastfeeding duration/infant feeding experience among UK mothers.MethodsWe ran cox and binary logistic regression models on data from 565 UK mothers, collected as part of a 2017-2018 retrospective online survey on social support and infant feeding.ResultsInformational support, compared to emotional support, was a less important predictor of both breastfeeding duration and experience. Supportive emotional support with unhelpful or absent informational support was associated with the lowest hazard of breastfeeding cessation before 3 months. Results for breastfeeding experience followed similar trends, where positive experience was associated with supportive emotional and unhelpful informational support. Negative experiences were less consistent; however, a higher probability of negative experience was found when both types of support were reported as unsupportive.ConclusionsOur findings point to the importance of health visitors providing emotional support to bolster the continuation of breastfeeding and encourage a positive subjective experience of infant feeding. The emphasis of emotional support in our results encourages increased allocation of resources and training opportunities to ensure health visitors are able to provide enhanced emotional support. Lowering health visitors caseloads to allow for personalised care is just one actionable example that may improve breastfeeding outcomes in the UK.

Project description:BackgroundAs e-cigarette use rapidly increases in popularity, data from online social systems (Twitter, Instagram, Google Web Search) can be used to capture and describe the social and environmental context in which individuals use, perceive, and are marketed this tobacco product. Social media data may serve as a massive focus group where people organically discuss e-cigarettes unprimed by a researcher, without instrument bias, captured in near real time and at low costs.ObjectiveThis study documents e-cigarette-related discussions on Twitter, describing themes of conversations and locations where Twitter users often discuss e-cigarettes, to identify priority areas for e-cigarette education campaigns. Additionally, this study demonstrates the importance of distinguishing between social bots and human users when attempting to understand public health-related behaviors and attitudes.MethodsE-cigarette-related posts on Twitter (N=6,185,153) were collected from December 24, 2016, to April 21, 2017. Techniques drawn from network science were used to determine discussions of e-cigarettes by describing which hashtags co-occur (concept clusters) in a Twitter network. Posts and metadata were used to describe where geographically e-cigarette-related discussions in the United States occurred. Machine learning models were used to distinguish between Twitter posts reflecting attitudes and behaviors of genuine human users from those of social bots. Odds ratios were computed from 2x2 contingency tables to detect if hashtags varied by source (social bot vs human user) using the Fisher exact test to determine statistical significance.ResultsClusters found in the corpus of hashtags from human users included behaviors (eg, #vaping), vaping identity (eg, #vapelife), and vaping community (eg, #vapenation). Additional clusters included products (eg, #eliquids), dual tobacco use (eg, #hookah), and polysubstance use (eg, #marijuana). Clusters found in the corpus of hashtags from social bots included health (eg, #health), smoking cessation (eg, #quitsmoking), and new products (eg, #ismog). Social bots were significantly more likely to post hashtags that referenced smoking cessation and new products compared to human users. The volume of tweets was highest in the Mid-Atlantic (eg, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and New York), followed by the West Coast and Southwest (eg, California, Arizona and Nevada).ConclusionsSocial media data may be used to complement and extend the surveillance of health behaviors including tobacco product use. Public health researchers could harness these data and methods to identify new products or devices. Furthermore, findings from this study demonstrate the importance of distinguishing between Twitter posts from social bots and humans when attempting to understand attitudes and behaviors. Social bots may be used to perpetuate the idea that e-cigarettes are helpful in cessation and to promote new products as they enter the marketplace.

Project description:BackgroundSystemic Lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder in which females are affected more commonly than males. In addition to the physical burden of the disease, patients with SLE are at higher risk of psychological disorders. In Jordan, there is a paucity of studies assessing the emotional well-being and psychosocial burden of SLE. This study aims to explore fibromyalgia, mental health-related problems and their association with SLE disease activity and its various manifestations.MethodsThis cross-sectional study enrolled all sequential female patients diagnosed with SLE who attended a single-provider rheumatology clinic at the Jordan University Hospital (JUH), in Amman, Jordan. Data was collected between September 2023 and March 2024. A structured questionnaire was utilized to collect demographic data as well as SLE disease features. Comorbid psychiatric disorders were assessed using PHQ-9 and GAD-7 for depression and anxiety, respectively, fibromyalgia by FiRST, disease activity by SLEDAI score, quality of life by SF-12 and perceived social support were evaluated using MSPSS.ResultsWe analyzed the data of 63 female patients diagnosed with SLE. The mean age was 40.3 ± 15.3 years with a mean age of 28.3 ± 12.1 years at diagnosis. The most common manifestations were mucocutaneous and hematological manifestations each affecting 84.1% of patients. Regarding treatments, 79.4% of patients were using hydroxychloroquine and 73.0% of patients were using glucocorticoids. According to PHQ-9, 34.9% of patients had depression and 7.9% of patients had severe depression. positive FiRST screening suggestive of fibromyalgia was found in 31.7%. The mean PCS-12 scores were 41.9 ± 9.8 and the mean MCS-12 was 51.9 ± 3.4 indicating a moderate level of physical and mental health, respectively. Using multivariate logistic regression, vascular involvement (OR = 14.9, 95% CI: 1.1-202.4) were associated with depression while patients with high PCS-12 scores (OR = 0.889, 95% CI: 0.79-0.96) had lower odds of positive FiRST screening.ConclusionOur study showed that patients with SLE are at an increased risk of comorbid psychiatric disorders, which adds to the complexity of the disease. The management of SLE should adopt a multidisciplinary approach to address both the physical and psychosocial burdens.

Project description:PurposeThis study describes the prevalence and predisposing factors for potentially modifiable unmet emotional, care/support, and information needs among adult survivors of childhood malignancies.MethodsA randomly selected/stratified sample of participants in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) responded to the CCSS-Needs Assessment Questionnaire (CCSS-NAQ) (n = 1189; mean [SD] current age, 39.7 [7.7], range = 26-61 years; 60.9 % women; mean [SD] years since diagnosis, 31.6 [4.7]). Survivors self-reported demographic information, health concerns, and needs; diagnosis/treatment data were obtained from medical records. Adjusted proportional risk ratios (prevalence ratios, PRs) were used to evaluate 77 separate needs.ResultsFifty-four percent of survivors reported unmet psycho-emotional, 41 % coping, and 35 % care/support needs; 51, 35, and 33 %, respectively, reported unmet information needs related to cancer/treatment, the health care system, and surveillance. Female sex and annual income <$60K were associated with multiple needs; fewer needs were linked to diagnosis/years since/or age at diagnosis. Having moderate/extreme cancer-related anxiety/fear was associated with all needs, including a >6-fold increased prevalence for help dealing with "worry" (PR = 6.06; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 3.79-9.69) and anxiety (PR = 6.10; 95 % CI, 3.82-9.72) and a >5-fold increased prevalence for "needing to move on with life" (PR = 5.56; 95 % CI, 3.34-9.25) and dealing with "uncertainty about the future" (PR = 5.50; 95 % CI, 3.44-8.77). Radiation exposure and perceived health status were related to 42 and 29 needs, respectively.ConclusionsDemographic factors, disease/treatment characteristics, and intrapersonal factors can be used to profile survivors' unmet emotional, care/support, and information needs.Implications for cancer survivorsThese data can be used to enhance provider-survivor communication, identify at-risk subsamples, and appraise core intervention content.
