Facile Synthesis of Quinolinecarboxylic Acid-Linked Covalent Organic Framework via One-Pot Reaction for Highly Efficient Removal of Water-Soluble Pollutants.

Project description:To efficiently eliminate highly polar organic pollutants from water has always been a difficult issue, especially in the case of ultralow concentrations. Herein, we present the facile synthesis of quinolinecarboxylic acid-linked COF (QCA-COF) via the Doebner multicomponent reaction, possessing multifunction, high specific surface area, robust physicochemical stability, and excellent crystallinity. The marked feature lies in the quinolinyl and carboxyl functions incorporated simultaneously to QCA-COF in one step. The major cis-orientation of carboxyl arms in QCA-COF was speculated by powder X-ray diffraction and total energy analysis. QCA-COF demonstrates excellent adsorption capacity for water-soluble organic pollutants such as rhodamine B (255.7 mg/g), methylene blue (306.1 mg/g), gentamycin (338.1 mg/g), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (294.1 mg/g) in water. The kinetic adsorptions fit the pseudo-second order model and their adsorption isotherms are Langmuir model. Remarkably, QCA-COF can capture the above four water-soluble organic pollutants from real water samples at ppb level with higher than 95% removal efficiencies and excellent recycling performance.

Synthesis of magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) for efficient removal of organic dyes from water.

Project description:A novel, simple and efficient strategy for fabricating a magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) as sorbent to remove organic compounds from simulated water samples is presented and tested for removal of methylene blue (MB) as an example. The novel adsorbents combine advantages of MOFs and magnetic nanoparticles and possess large capacity, low cost, rapid removal and easy separation of the solid phase, which makes it an excellent sorbent for treatment of wastewaters. The resulting magnetic MOFs composites (also known as MFCs) have large surface areas (79.52 m(2) g(-1)), excellent magnetic response (14.89 emu g(-1)), and large mesopore volume (0.09 cm(3) g(-1)), as well as good chemical inertness and mechanical stability. Adsorption was not drastically affected by pH, suggesting π-π stacking interaction and/or hydrophobic interactions between MB and MFCs. Kinetic parameters followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and adsorption was described by the Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption capacity was 84 mg MB g(-1) at an initial MB concentration of 30 mg L(-1), which increased to 245 mg g(-1) when the initial MB concentration was 300 mg L(-1). This capacity was much greater than most other adsorbents reported in the literature. In addition, MFC adsorbents possess excellent reusability, being effective after at least five consecutive cycles.

Facile synthesis of magnesium-based metal-organic framework with tailored nanostructure for effective volatile organic compounds adsorption.

Project description:A novel Mg(II) metal-organic framework (Mg-MOF) was synthesized based on the ligand of 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis confirmed that three-dimensional-nanostructure Mg-MOFs formed a monoclinic system with a channel size of 15.733 Å × 23.736 Å. N2 adsorption isotherm, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were performed to characterize the thermal stability and purity of the Mg-MOFs. The adsorption studies on four typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during wood drying showed that Mg-MOFs have noteworthy adsorption capacities, especially for benzene and β-pinene with adsorptions of 182.26 mg g-1 and 144.42 mg g-1, respectively. In addition, the adsorption of Mg-MOFs mainly occurred via natural adsorption, specifically, multi-layer physical adsorption, accompanied by chemical forces, which occurred in the pores where the VOCs molecules combined with active sites. As an adsorbent, Mg-MOFs exhibit versatile behaviour for toxic gas accumulation.

Long-afterglow metal-organic frameworks: reversible guest-induced phosphorescence tunability.

Project description:Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention due to their wide structural tunability and potential application in light-emitting diodes, biological imaging and chemical sensors. However, successful examples of long-persistent afterglow MOFs are still quite limited to date. In this work, we report that two types of Zn-terephthalate (TPA) MOFs (namely [Zn(TPA)(DMF)] (1-DMF) and MOF-5) could exhibit an obvious room-temperature afterglow emission with a time-resolved luminescence lifetime as high as 0.47 seconds. The phosphorescence-based afterglow was also highly sensitive to the temperature, and the reversible emission intensity could be recycled under high/low temperatures. Moreover, both 1-DMF and MOF-5 showed highly tunable afterglow phosphorescence colors (from cyan to yellow and from green to red, respectively) upon treatment with pyridine solution. The fluorescence/phosphorescence emission color of MOF-5 can be reversibly switched due to the addition and removal of a pyridine guest to and from the host nanochannel, as shown in both experimental and computational studies. Therefore, this work not only shows a facile method to develop MOF-based long-afterglow materials at room temperature, but also presents a strategy to tune their phosphorescence in a wide range based on host-guest interactions.

Facile Solution-Refluxing Synthesis and Photocatalytic Dye Degradation of a Dynamic Covalent Organic Framework.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a novel crystalline porous adsorbent, have been attracting significant attention for their synthesis and application exploration due to the advantages of designability, stability, and functionalization. Herein, through increasing the concentration of the acid catalyst, a facile solution-refluxing synthesis method was developed for the preparation of a three-dimensional dynamic COF material, COF-300, with high yields (>90%) and high space-time yields (>28 kg m-3 day-1). This synthesis method not only permits gram-scale synthesis, but also yields products that well maintain porosity and unique guest-dependent dynamic behavior. Moreover, the catalytic activity of COF-300 as a metal-free photocatalyst was explored for the first time. Under 365 nm ultra-violet light irradiation, COF-300 can effectively catalyze the dye degradation (>99%) in wastewater with good recyclability. By adding magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the solution-refluxing synthesis of COF-300, Fe3O4/COF-300 nanocomposites can be obtained and used as magnetically recyclable photocatalysts, demonstrating the superiority of this facile synthesis procedure. Our study provides new insights for the preparation of COF materials and a constructive exploration for their water treatment application.

Synthesis, structure, and fluorescence properties of a calcium-based metal-organic framework.

Project description:The solvothermal reaction of a mixture of calcium acetylacetonate and 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) in a solution containing ethanol and distilled water gave rise to a metal-organic framework (MOF), {(H3O+)2[Ca(NDC)(C2H5O)(OH)]}4·1.1H2O. This MOF possesses a new structure composed of calcium clusters and H2NDC linker anions and shows a unique fluorescence property; it exhibits a fluorescence peak at 395 nm (λ ex = 350 nm) at room temperature, which is blue-shifted compared with that exhibited by the free H2NDC ligand. One of the possible mechanisms for this fluorescence is likely attributable to a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition and is the first example of a calcium-based MOF exhibiting blue-shifted fluorescence due to LMCT.

Solvothermal Synthesis of a Novel Calcium Metal-Organic Framework: High Temperature and Electrochemical Behaviour.

Project description:The rapid growth in the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) over recent years has highlighted their high potential in a variety of applications. For biological and environmental applications MOFs with low toxicity are vitally important to avoid any harmful effects. For this reason, Ca-based MOFs are highly desirable owing to their low cost and high biocompatibility. Useful Ca MOFs are still rare owing to the ionic character and large size of the Ca2+ ion tending to produce dense phases. Presented here is a novel Ca-based MOF containing 2,3-dihyrdoxyterephthalate (2,3-dhtp) linkers Ca(2,3-dhtp)(H2O) (SIMOF-4). The material undergoes a phase transformation on heating, which can be followed by variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction. The structure of the high temperature form was obtained using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical properties of SIMOF-4 were also investigated for use in a Na ion battery.

Facile synthesis of 1D organic-inorganic perovskite micro-belts with high water stability for sensing and photonic applications.

Project description:The development of low-dimensional perovskite micro/nanostructures with high water stability for novel photonic/electronic applications is highly desirable. Herein, one-dimensional (1D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite micro-belts [(AD)Pb2Cl5] (OIHP-AD, AD = acridine) were facilely synthesized through fast precipitation in aqueous solution at room temperature without any organic solvent and expensive alkyl halide. Luminescent properties and water stability are efficiently enhanced due to the highly regular arrangement of the protonated AD dyes with larger steric hindrance distributed in the perovskite host-guest system, which can afford denser crystal packing to prevent water erosion. The OIHP-AD micro-belts present upconversion fluorescence, polarized photoemission and optical waveguide performances with a low loss coefficient (0.004 dB μm-1) during propagation, thus extending the applications of 1D perovskite micro/nanostructures to potential optical communication micro-devices.

Synthesis and characterization of lead-based metal-organic framework nano-needles for effective water splitting application.

Project description:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials characterized by robust linkages between organic ligands and metal ions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit significant characteristics such as high porosity, extensive surface area, and exceptional chemical stability, provided the constituent components are meticulously selected. A metal-organic framework (MOF) containing lead and ligands derived from 4-aminobenzoic acid and 2-carboxybenzaldehyde has been synthesized using the sonochemical methodology. The crystals produced were subjected to various analytical techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermal analysis. The BET analysis yielded results indicating a surface area was found to be 1304.27 m2 g-1. The total pore volume was estimated as 2.13 cm3 g-1 with an average pore size of 4.61 nm., rendering them highly advantageous for a diverse range of practical applications. The activity of the modified Pb-MOF electrode was employed toward water-splitting applications. The electrode reached the current density of 50 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of - 0.6 V (vs. RHE) for hydrogen evolution, and 50 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 1.7 V (vs. RHE) for oxygen evolution.
