Steel slag as low-cost catalyst for artificial photosynthesis to convert CO₂ and water into hydrogen and methanol.

ABSTRACT: Photoreduction of CO₂ with sunlight to produce solar fuels, also named artificial photosynthesis, is considered one of the most attractive strategies to face the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases and achieving climate neutrality. Following an approach in line with the principles of the circular economy, the low-cost catalytic system (1) based on an industrial by-product such as steel slag was assessed, which was properly modified with nanostructured palladium on its surface in order to make it capable of promoting the conversion of CO₂ into methanol and hydrogen through a two-stage process of photoreduction and thermal conversion having formic acid as the intermediate. Notably, for the first time in the literature steel slag is used as photoreduction catalyst.

BOF steel slag as a low-cost sorbent for vanadium (V) removal from soil washing effluent.

Project description:Soil washing is an effective remediation method to remove heavy metals from contaminated soil. However, it produces wastewater that contains large amounts of heavy metals, which lead to serious pollution. This study investigated the removal of vanadium (V) from synthetic soil washing effluent using BOF steel slag. The effects of particle size, slag dosage, initial pH, and initial vanadium concentration on removal behavior were studied. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were also analyzed. The results showed that the vanadium removal efficiency increased as the steel slag particle size decreased and as the amount of slag increased. The initial pH and vanadium concentration did not play key roles. At the optimum particle size (<0.15 mm) and dosage (50 g/L), the removal rate reached 97.1% when treating 100 mg/L of vanadium. The influence of the washing reagent residue was studied to simulate real conditions. Citric acid, tartaric acid, and Na2EDTA all decreased the removal rate. While oxalic acid did not have negative effects on vanadium removal at concentrations of 0.05-0.2 mol/L, which was proved by experiments using real washing effluents. Considering both soil washing effect and effluent treatment, oxalic acid of 0.2 mol/L is recommended as soil washing reagent.

Synergetic adsorption-photocatalysis process for water treatment using TiO2 supported on waste stainless steel slag.

Project description:This study presents an economical and efficient method to decolourise dye wastewater using industrial waste stainless steel slag (SSS). Titanium dioxide was immobilised on SSS by a precipitation-calcination method. Samples with different TiO2 loadings (prepared using either titanium isopropoxide precursor or commercial TiO2 nanoparticles) were used to decolourise an organic contaminant (methylene blue) under dark and UV conditions in aqueous solution, and their adsorption and photocatalytic performances were compared. Samples with 15 and 25 TiO2 wt% prepared by the precursor method had normalised photocatalytic efficiencies per gram close to that of bare TiO2; using an adsorption-photocatalysis process led to efficiencies 4.4 and 1.6 times higher than that of pure TiO2. The improvement in catalytic performance (greater for samples with less than 50% TiO2 content) may be due to better UV absorption ability (related to with the improvement of TiO2 particle dispersion) and the close TiO2 support interaction, which can eventually cause a photocatalysis-enhancing shift towards more negative oxidation potentials. The SSS also acted as an efficient adsorption trap for organic compounds. The pollutant was thus transferred to the TiO2 surface and photodegraded more rapidly and efficiently. The outstanding synergetic adsorption-photocatalysis capacities of TiO2 waste stainless steel slag composites for dye water treatment made the proposed conversion approach have great potential in practical applications.

CO2 Mineralization and Utilization using Steel Slag for Establishing a Waste-to-Resource Supply Chain.

Project description:Both steelmaking via an electric arc furnace and manufacturing of portland cement are energy-intensive and resource-exploiting processes, with great amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and alkaline solid waste generation. In fact, most CO2 capture and storage technologies are currently too expensive to be widely applied in industries. Moreover, proper stabilization prior to utilization of electric arc furnace slag are still challenging due to its high alkalinity, heavy metal leaching potentials and volume instability. Here we deploy an integrated approach to mineralizing flue gas CO2 using electric arc furnace slag while utilizing the reacted product as supplementary cementitious materials to establish a waste-to-resource supply chain toward a circular economy. We found that the flue gas CO2 was rapidly mineralized into calcite precipitates using electric arc furnace slag. The carbonated slag can be successfully utilized as green construction materials in blended cement mortar. By this modulus, the global CO2 reduction potential using iron and steel slags was estimated to be ~138 million tons per year.

Simultaneous Removal of SO2 and NO x Using Steel Slag Slurry Combined with Ozone Oxidation.

Project description:In this work, steel slag slurry was used in combination with O3 oxidation for the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO x in a laboratory-scale wet flue gas desulfurization process. The effects of the oxidation temperature, steel slag concentration, initial SO2 concentration, and pH value on the desulfurization and denitrification efficiencies were studied. The results showed that the highest NO x removal efficiency occurred at an oxidation temperature of 90 °C. With an increase of the oxidation temperature above 90 °C, the denitrification efficiency decreased due to the decomposition of N2O5. The effect of the SO2 concentration on denitrification was complicated. When the concentration of SO2 was 500 ppm, generation of SO3 2- promoted the absorption of NO2. However, higher SO2 concentrations strengthened the competitive absorption of SO2 and NO x . In the pH range of 8.5-4.5, the denitrification efficiency was maintained at about 96%. The component analyses of the aqueous solution and the solid residue were conducted to investigate the compositions of the absorption products. The results showed that NO3 - and SO4 2- were the major anions in the aqueous solution. The nitrogen balance was analyzed to be 95.8%, clearly illustrating the migration and transformation path of nitrogen. In the solid residue, most alkaline substances were consumed, and the final products were mainly CaSO4 and FeO. Accordingly, the reaction mechanism of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification using steel slag combined with ozone oxidation was proposed.

Kinetics of steel slag dissolution: from experiments to modelling.

Project description:Carbon dioxide sequestration via carbonation of steel slags is a promising way of combining two waste products to create value. Understanding the dissolution kinetics of steel slags, which are alkaline and rich in calcium, in acidic media is essential to configure such a process. In this study, we seek to analyse the dissolution mechanism from experimental studies and develop a mathematical model considering the heterogeneous characteristics of slag. We found that the reduction in calcium extraction efficiency with an increase in particle size, which is normally associated with surface passivation or non-uniformity of samples, can be explained by considering the morphological features associated with the distribution of MgO-FeO (RO) phase in the calcium silicate matrix. We present a population balance model and show that the reduction in calcium extraction efficiency in coarse particle fractions is due to increased sporulation of the RO phase. The findings in the study suggest that the leaching of metal ions from slag is controlled by proton-promoted surface dissolution reaction, where the dependence of acid concentration follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood adsorption isotherm. The model shows good agreement with a large set of parametric studies and demonstrates the importance of considering morphological features, as we progress towards development of a priori dissolution models for multi-mineral oxides and silicates.

Engineering artificial photosynthesis based on rhodopsin for CO2 fixation.

Project description:Microbial rhodopsin, a significant contributor to sustaining life through light harvesting, holds untapped potential for carbon fixation. Here, we construct an artificial photosynthesis system which combines the proton-pumping ability of rhodopsin with an extracellular electron uptake mechanism, establishing a pathway to drive photoelectrosynthetic CO2 fixation by Ralstonia eutropha (also known as Cupriavidus necator) H16, a facultatively chemolithoautotrophic soil bacterium. R. eutropha is engineered to heterologously express an extracellular electron transfer pathway of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and Gloeobacter rhodopsin (GR). Employing GR and the outer-membrane conduit MtrCAB from S. oneidensis, extracellular electrons and GR-driven proton motive force are integrated into R. eutropha's native electron transport chain (ETC). Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the photoelectrochemical system splits water to supply electrons to R. eutropha via the Mtr outer-membrane route. The light-activated proton pump - GR, supported by canthaxanthin as an antenna, powers ATP synthesis and reverses the ETC to regenerate NADH/NADPH, facilitating R. eutropha's biomass synthesis from CO2. Overexpression of a carbonic anhydrase further enhances CO2 fixation. This artificial photosynthesis system has the potential to advance the development of efficient photosynthesis, redefining our understanding of the ecological role of microbial rhodopsins in nature.

Long-term evolution of highly alkaline steel slag drainage waters.

Project description:The disposal of slag generated by the steel industry can have negative consequences upon the surrounding aquatic environment by the generation of high pH waters, leaching of potentially problematic trace metals, and rapid rates of calcite precipitation which smother benthic habitats. A 36-year dataset was collated from the long-term ambient monitoring of physicochemical parameters and elemental concentrations of samples from two steel slag leachate-affected watercourses in northern England. Waters were typified by elevated pH (>10), high alkalinity, and were rich in dissolved metals (e.g. calcium (Ca), aluminium (Al), and zinc (Zn)). Long-term trend analysis was performed upon pH, alkalinity, and Ca concentration which, in addition to Ca flux calculations, were used to highlight the longevity of pollution arising as a result of the dumping and subsequent leaching of steel slags. Declines in calcium and alkalinity have been modest over the monitoring period and not accompanied by significant declines in water pH. If the monotonic trends of decline in alkalinity and calcium continue in the largest of the receiving streams, it will be in the region of 50-80 years before calcite precipitation would be expected to be close to baseline levels, where ecological impacts would be negligible.

RuO2 Nanostructure as an Efficient and Versatile Catalyst for H2 Photosynthesis.

Project description:Photocatalytic H2 generation holds promise in the green production of alternative fuels and valuable chemicals. Seeking alternative, cost-effective, stable, and possibly reusable catalysts represents a timeless challenge for scientists working in the field. Herein, commercial RuO2 nanostructures were found to be a robust, versatile, and competitive catalyst in H2 photoproduction in several conditions. We employed it in a classic three-component system and compared its activities with those of the widely used platinum nanoparticle catalyst. We observed a hydrogen evolution rate of 0.137 mol h-1 g-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 6.8% in water using EDTA as an electron donor. Moreover, the favorable employment of l-cysteine as the electron source opens possibilities precluded to other noble metal catalyst. The versatility of the system has also been demonstrated in organic media with impressive H2 production in acetonitrile. The robustness has been proved by the recovery of the catalyst by centrifugation and reusage alternatively in different media.

New black indium oxide-tandem photothermal CO2-H2 methanol selective catalyst.

Project description:It has long been known that the thermal catalyst Cu/ZnO/Al2O3(CZA) can enable remarkable catalytic performance towards CO2 hydrogenation for the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) and methanol synthesis reactions. However, owing to the direct competition between these reactions, high pressure and high hydrogen concentration (≥75%) are required to shift the thermodynamic equilibrium towards methanol synthesis. Herein, a new black indium oxide with photothermal catalytic activity is successfully prepared, and it facilitates a tandem synthesis of methanol at a low hydrogen concentration (50%) and ambient pressure by directly using by-product CO as feedstock. The methanol selectivities achieve 33.24% and 49.23% at low and high hydrogen concentrations, respectively.

Functions of MnOx in NaCl Aqueous Solution for Artificial Photosynthesis.

Project description:Photoelectrochemical water splitting has been intensively investigated as artificial photosynthesis technology to convert solar energy into chemical energy. The use of seawater and salted water has advantages for minimum environmental burden; however, the oxidation of Cl- ion to hypochlorous acid (HClO), which has toxicity and heavy corrosiveness, should occur at the anode, along with the oxygen evolution. Here, O2 and HClO production in aqueous solution containing Cl- on photoanodes modified with various metal oxides was investigated. The modification of MnOx resulted in the promotion of the O2 evolution reaction (OER) specifically without HClO production over a wide range of conditions. The results will contribute not only to the practical application of artificial photosynthesis using salted water but also to the elucidation of substantial function of manganese as the element for OER center in natural photosynthesis.
