Comprehensive multiplexed analysis of risky drugs in eggs based on magnetic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks and UHPLC Q-Orbitrap HRMS.

ABSTRACT: A novel magnetic adsorbent solid-phase Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 extraction method coupled with UHPLC Q-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry for the sensitive and high efficiency detection of fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, dyes and amphenicols in eggs is described. Under optimum conditions, CCβ and CCα of 0.62 to 26.97 μg.kg^-1 and 0.36 to 16.37 μg.kg^-1 was obtained, which is much better than that obtained by conventional methods. The accuracy, expressed as recovery, were achieved falling between 75% and 104%. The proposed strategy provides several advantages of simplicity and low energy consumption, thus retaining potential for the screening of risky drugs in various samples.

Meltable, Glass-Forming, Iron Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks.

Project description:We describe the first meltable iron-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), denoted MUV-24. This material, elusive from direct synthesis, is obtained from the thermal treatment of [Fe3(im)6(Him)2], which yields Fe(im)2 upon loss of the neutral imidazole molecules. Different crystalline phase transformations are observed upon further heating, until the material melts at 482 °C. Vitrification upon cooling of the liquid phase gives rise to the first Fe-metal-organic framework glass. X-ray total scattering experiments show that the tetrahedral environment of the crystalline solids is maintained in the glass, whereas nanoindentation measurements reveal an increase in Young's modulus, in agreement with stiffening upon vitrification.

Mixed metal node effect in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

Project description:We synthesized two series of bimetallic (zinc and cobalt) zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-62) under different solvothermal conditions. It is found that the structure of the derived ZIF crystals is highly sensitive to synthesis conditions. One series possesses the standard ZIF-62 structure, whereas the other has a mixed structure composed of both the standard structure and an unknown one. The standard series exhibits a slight negative deviation from linearity of melting temperature (T m) and glass transition temperature (T g) with the substitution of Co for Zn. In contrast, the new series displays a stronger negative deviation. These negative deviations from linearity indicate the mixed metal node effect in bimetallic ZIF-62 due to the structural mismatch between Co2+ and Zn2+ and to the difference in their electronic configurations. The new series involves both cobalt-rich and zinc-rich phases, whereas the standard one shows one homogeneous phase. Density functional theory calculations predict that the substitution of Co for Zn increases the bulk modulus of the ZIF crystals. This work indicates that the structure, melting behaviour, and mechanical properties of ZIFs can be tuned by metal node substitution and by varying the synthetic conditions. Both series of ZIFs have higher glass forming abilities due to their higher T g/T m ratios (0.77-0.84) compared to most good glass formers.

Pore closure in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks under mechanical pressure.

Project description:We investigate the pressure-dependent mechanical behaviour of the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-4 (M(im)2; M2+ = Co2+ or Zn2+, im- = imidazolate) with high pressure, synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and mercury intrusion measurements. A displacive phase transition from a highly compressible open pore (op) phase with continuous porosity (space group Pbca, bulk modulus ∼1.4 GPa) to a closed pore (cp) phase with inaccessible porosity (space group P21/c, bulk modulus ∼3.3-4.9 GPa) is triggered by the application of mechanical pressure. Over the course of the transitions, both ZIF-4 materials contract by about 20% in volume. However, the threshold pressure, the reversibility and the immediate repeatability of the phase transition depend on the metal cation. ZIF-4(Zn) undergoes the op-cp phase transition at a hydrostatic mechanical pressure of only 28 MPa, while ZIF-4(Co) requires about 50 MPa to initiate the transition. Interestingly, ZIF-4(Co) fully returns to the op phase after decompression, whereas ZIF-4(Zn) remains in the cp phase after pressure release and requires subsequent heating to switch back to the op phase. These variations in high pressure behaviour can be rationalised on the basis of the different electron configurations of the respective M2+ ions (3d10 for Zn2+ and 3d7 for Co2+). Our results present the first examples of op-cp phase transitions (i.e. breathing transitions) of ZIFs driven by mechanical pressure and suggest potential applications of these functional materials as shock absorbers, nanodampers, or in mechanocalorics.

Core-Shell Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for Enhanced Hydrogen Storage.

Project description:Core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67- and ZIF-67@ZIF-8-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) were synthesized solvothermally using a seed-mediated methodology. Transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, line scan, elemental mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy analyses were performed to confirm the formation of a core-shell structure with the controlled Co/Zn elemental composition of ∼0.50 for both the core-shell ZIFs. The synthesized core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and ZIF-67@ZIF-8 frameworks conferred enhanced H2 (2.03 and 1.69 wt %) storage properties at 77 K and 1 bar, which are ca. 41 and 18%, respectively, higher than that of the parent ZIF-8. Notably, the distinctly remarkable H2 storage properties shown by both the core-shell ZIFs over the bimetallic Co/Zn-ZIF and the physical mixture of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 clearly evidenced their unique structural properties (confinement of porosity) and elemental heterogeneity due to the core-shell morphology of the outperforming core-shell ZIFs. Moreover, H2 adsorption isotherm data of these frameworks are best fitted with the Langmuir model (R 2 ≥ 0.9999). Along with the remarkably enhanced H2 storage capacities, the core-shell ZIFs also displayed an improved CO2 capture behavior. Hence, we demonstrated here that the controlled structural features endorsed by the rationally designed porous materials may find high potential in H2 storage applications.

Solvent-free bottom-up patterning of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

Project description:Patterning metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at submicrometer scale is a crucial yet challenging task for their integration in miniaturized devices. Here we report an electron beam (e-beam) assisted, bottom-up approach for patterning of two MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF), ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. A mild pretreatment of metal oxide precursors with linker vapor leads to the sensitization of the oxide surface to e-beam irradiation, effectively inhibiting subsequent conversion of the oxide to ZIFs in irradiated areas, while ZIF growth in non-irradiated areas is not affected. Well-resolved patterns with features down to the scale of 100 nm can be achieved. This developer-free, all-vapor phase technique will facilitate the incorporation of MOFs in micro- and nanofabrication processes.

Exceptional chemical and thermal stability of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

Project description:Twelve zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs; termed ZIF-1 to -12) have been synthesized as crystals by copolymerization of either Zn(II) (ZIF-1 to -4, -6 to -8, and -10 to -11) or Co(II) (ZIF-9 and -12) with imidazolate-type links. The ZIF crystal structures are based on the nets of seven distinct aluminosilicate zeolites: tetrahedral Si(Al) and the bridging O are replaced with transition metal ion and imidazolate link, respectively. In addition, one example of mixed-coordination imidazolate of Zn(II) and In(III) (ZIF-5) based on the garnet net is reported. Study of the gas adsorption and thermal and chemical stability of two prototypical members, ZIF-8 and -11, demonstrated their permanent porosity (Langmuir surface area = 1,810 m(2)/g), high thermal stability (up to 550 degrees C), and remarkable chemical resistance to boiling alkaline water and organic solvents.

Multivariate sodalite zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: a direct solvent-free synthesis.

Project description:Different mixed-ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) with sodalite topology, i.e. isoreticular to ZIF-8, unachievable by conventional synthetic routes, have been prepared using a solvent-free methodology. In particular, the versatility of this method is demonstrated with three different metal centres (Zn, Co and Fe) and binary combinations of three different ligands (2-methylimidazole, 2-ethylimidazole and 2-methylbenzimidazole). One combination of ligands, 2-ethylimidazole and 2-methylbenzimidazole, results in the formation of SOD frameworks for the three metal centres despite this topology not being obtained for the individual ligands. Theoretical calculations confirm that this topology is the lowest in energy upon ligand mixing.

Recovery of 2,3-Butanediol from Fermentation Broth by Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks.

Project description:The efficient separation of the 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) intermediate from fermentation broth is an important issue in the production of biofuels from biomass-derived intermediates. Two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks ZIF-8 and ZIF-71 were investigated for the adsorption of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) from fermentation broth via liquid breakthrough adsorption measurements. While both ZIF materials initially show high separation performance, ZIF-71 retains robust separation performance even after aging in ethanol for two years, whereas the capacity of ZIF-8 decreases significantly. The robustness and stability of ZIF-71 are further confirmed with cyclic fixed bed adsorption measurements. The uptake of 2,3-BDO on ZIF-71 reaches >100 g/kg with negligible uptakes of sugars, organic acids, and other alcohols present in the fermentation broth. Excellent selectivity toward 2,3-BDO over water is also achieved. The 2,3-BDO-loaded ZIF-71 can be regenerated efficiently with ethanol as desorbent. These findings indicate that ZIF-71 shows considerable promise as an adsorbent to recover and purify diols from fermentation broths.
