Prebiotic Potential and Value-Added Products Derived from Spirulina laxissima SV001-A Step towards Healthy Living.

ABSTRACT: Lately, microalgae-based value-added products have been gaining market value because they moderate the dependency on fossil fuel and high-value chemical products. To this end, the purpose of this study was to develop prebiotic products from the microalgae Spirulina sp. The microalgae were isolated from the fresh water and characterized at the molecular level. The dry biomass, chlorophyll content, phycocyanin, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the isolated strains were analyzed. Moreover, value-added products like Spirulina cake, chocolate, tea, vermicelli and Spirulina juice were made for a vulnerable population due to high nutritive value.

Value-Added Products Derived from Poly(ethylene terephthalate) Glycolysis.

Project description:Among polymer wastes, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is the most important commercial thermoplastic polyester. Less than 30% of total PET production is recycled into new products. Therefore, large amounts of waste PET need to be recycled. We describe a feasible approach for the direct application of the glycolysis products of PET (GP-PET), without further purification, for the synthesis of value-added products. It was established that GP-PET is valorized via phosphorylation with phenylphosphonic dichloride (PPD), as well as with trimethyl phosphate (TMP). When PPD is used, a condensation reaction takes place with the evolution of hydrogen chloride. During the interaction between GP-PET and TMP, the following reactions take place simultaneously: a transesterification with the participation of the hydroxyl group of GP-PET and the methoxy group of TMP and an exchange reaction between the ester group of GP-PET and the methyl ester group of TMP. The occurrence of the exchange reaction was confirmed by 1H, 31P, 13C NMR, and GPC analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the percentage of a carbon residual (CR) implies the possibility of using the end products as flame retardant (FR) additives, especially for polyurethanes as well as thermal stabilizers of polymer materials or Li-ion cells.

Modern Electrochemical Aspects for the Synthesis of Value-Added Organic Products.

Project description:The use of electricity instead of stoichiometric amounts of oxidizers or reducing agents in synthesis is very appealing for economic and ecological reasons, and represents a major driving force for research efforts in this area. To use electron transfer at the electrode for a successful transformation in organic synthesis, the intermediate radical (cation/anion) has to be stabilized. Its combination with other approaches in organic chemistry or concepts of contemporary synthesis allows the establishment of powerful synthetic methods. The aim in the 21st Century will be to use as little fossil carbon as possible and, for this reason, the use of renewable sources is becoming increasingly important. The direct conversion of renewables, which have previously mainly been incinerated, is of increasing interest. This Review surveys many of the recent seminal important developments which will determine the future of this dynamic emerging field.

Alternative Solvents for the Biorefinery of Spirulina: Impact of Pretreatment on Free Fatty Acids with High Added Value.

Project description:The growing demand for molecules of interest from microalgal biomass, such as phycobiliproteins, has led to an accumulation of unused by-products. For example, phycocyanin, obtained by the extraction of Spirulina, generated cakes rich in non-polar molecules of interest, such as free fatty acids (FFAs). These FFAs were generally considered as markers of lipidome degradation, but represented a relevant alternative to topical antibiotics, based on a biomimetic approach. In order to develop a sustainable Spirulina biorefinery scheme, different pretreatments and alternative solvents were screened to identify the best combination for the valorization of FFAs. Thus, five pre-treatments were studied including a phycocyanin extraction by-product. The following three biobased solvents were selected: ethyl acetate (EtOAc), dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and a fatty acid-based natural deep eutectic solvent (NaDES). The pigment and fatty acid profiles were established by spectroscopic and chromatographic approaches. NaDES demonstrated superior extraction capacity and selectivity compared to other biobased solvents, regardless of pretreatment. In contrast, EtOAc and DMC showed a greater diversity of FFAs, with a predominance of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The by-product has also been highlighted as a relevant raw material facilitating the recovery of FFAs. These results pave the way for a green biorefinery of the lipid fraction and phycobiliproteins of microalgae.

Efficient Plastic Waste Recycling to Value-Added Products by Integrated Biomass Processing.

Project description:The industrial production of polymeric materials is continuously increasing, but sustainable concepts directing towards a circular economy remain rather elusive. The present investigation focuses on the recycling of polyoxymethylene polymers, facilitated through combined catalytic processing of polymer waste and biomass-derived diols. The integrated concept enables the production of value-added cyclic acetals, which can flexibly function as solvents, fuel additives, pharmaceutical intermediates, and even monomeric materials for polymerization reactions. Based on this approach, an open-loop recycling of these waste materials can be envisaged in which the carbon content of the polymer waste is efficiently utilized as a C1 building block, paving the way to unprecedented possibilities within a circular economy of polyoxymethylene polymers.

Added Value of Products from Endangered Local Sheep Breeds in Mountain Areas.

Project description:Local sheep breeds in the Italian eastern Alps passed from ex situ to in situ conservation. These breeds are mainly reared by smallholders in low-input farming systems. To allow the sustainable use of genetic resources, the economic sustainability of farmers must be supported through production guidelines. Analyzing meat and milk composition and fatty acid profile, we aimed to characterize their products based on breed and diet to identify tailormade sales strategies. Results showed that both meat and milk have good nutritional values and can benefit from a pasture-based diet, irrespective of the breed. These results support the redaction of production guidelines based on the peculiar characteristics of these breeds: being multi-purpose breeds adapted to mountain areas and to grazing, thus contributing to the conservation of cultural and landscape heritage.

Valorisation of Whey Permeate in Sequential Bioprocesses towards Value-Added Products-Optimisation of Biphasic and Classical Batch Cultures of Kluyveromyces marxianus.

Project description:Whey permeate is categorised as hazardous wastewater for aquatic environments, mainly due to its high lactose content. Therefore, it must be valorised before being released into the environment. One pathway for whey permeate management is its use in biotechnological processes. Herein, we present roads for whey permeate valorisation with the K. marxianus WUT240 strain. The established technology is based on two bioprocesses. During first, 2.5 g/L 2-phenylethanol and fermented plant oils enriched with different flavourings are obtained after 48 h biphasic cultures at 30 °C. The second process leads to a maximum of 75 g ethanol/L (YP/S = 0.53 g/g) after 96 h at 30 °C. Moreover, established whey permeate valorisation pathways reduced its biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand values by 12- to 3-fold, respectively. Together, the present study reports a complete, effective, and environmentally friendly whey permeate management strategy while simultaneously enabling the acquisition of valuable compounds with substantial application potential.

Bioreactors for lignocellulose conversion into fermentable sugars for production of high added value products.

Project description:Lignocellulosic biomasses derived from dedicated crops and agro-industrial residual materials are promising renewable resources for the production of fuels and other added value bioproducts. Due to the tolerance to a wide range of environments, the dedicated crops can be cultivated on marginal lands, avoiding conflict with food production and having beneficial effects on the environment. Besides, the agro-industrial residual materials represent an abundant, available, and cheap source of bioproducts that completely cut out the economical and environmental issues related to the cultivation of energy crops. Different processing steps like pretreatment, hydrolysis and microbial fermentation are needed to convert biomass into added value bioproducts. The reactor configuration, the operative conditions, and the operation mode of the conversion processes are crucial parameters for a high yield and productivity of the biomass bioconversion process. This review summarizes the last progresses in the bioreactor field, with main attention on the new configurations and the agitation systems, for conversion of dedicated energy crops (Arundo donax) and residual materials (corn stover, wheat straw, mesquite wood, agave bagasse, fruit and citrus peel wastes, sunflower seed hull, switchgrass, poplar sawdust, cogon grass, sugarcane bagasse, sunflower seed hull, and poplar wood) into sugars and ethanol. The main novelty of this review is its focus on reactor components and properties.

Project description:Production of biofuels and other value-added products from lignocellulose breakdown requires the coordinated metabolic activity of varied microorganisms. The increasing global demand for biofuels encourages the development and optimization of production strategies. Optimization in turn requires a thorough understanding of the microbial mechanisms and metabolic pathways behind the formation of each product of interest. Hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is a bottleneck in its industrial use and often affects yield efficiency. The accessibility of the biomass to the microorganisms is the key to the release of sugars that are then taken up as substrates and subsequently transformed into the desired products. While the effects of different metabolic intermediates in the overall production of biofuel and other relevant products have been studied, the role of proteins and their activity under anaerobic conditions has not been widely explored. Shifts in enzyme production may inform the state of the microorganisms involved; thus, acquiring insights into the protein production and enzyme activity could be an effective resource to optimize production strategies. The application of proteomic analysis is currently a promising strategy in this area. This review deals on the aspects of enzymes and proteomics of bioprocesses of biofuels production using lignocellulosic biomass as substrate.

High value-added products derived from crude glycerol via microbial fermentation using Yarrowia clade yeast.

Project description:BackgroundContemporary biotechnology focuses on many problems related to the functioning of developed societies. Many of these problems are related to health, especially with the rapidly rising numbers of people suffering from civilization diseases, such as obesity or diabetes. One factor contributing to the development of these diseases is the high consumption of sucrose. A very promising substitute for this sugar has emerged: the polyhydroxy alcohols, characterized by low caloric value and sufficient sweetness to replace table sugar in food production.ResultsIn the current study, yeast belonging to the Yarrowia clade were tested for erythritol, mannitol and arabitol production using crude glycerol from the biodiesel and soap industries as carbon sources. Out of the 13 tested species, Yarrowia divulgata and Candida oslonensis turned out to be particularly efficient polyol producers. Both species produced large amounts of these compounds from both soap-derived glycerol (59.8-62.7 g dm-3) and biodiesel-derived glycerol (76.8-79.5 g dm-3). However, it is equally important that the protein and lipid content of the biomass (around 30% protein and 12% lipid) obtained after the processes is high enough to use this yeast in the production of animal feed.ConclusionsThe use of waste glycerol for the production of polyols as well as utilization of the biomass obtained after the process for the production of feed are part of the development of modern waste-free technologies.
