The Role of Prussian Blue-Thallium and Potassium Similarities and Differences in Crystal Structures of Selected Cyanido Complexes of W, Fe and Mo.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis and single X-ray crystal structures of Tl₂[W(CN)₆(bpy)]·H₂O, Tl[W(CN)₆(bpy)], Tl₅₇[{Fe(CN)₆}₁₂{NO₃}₉]·9H₂O, Tl₄[W(CN)₈] and Tl₄[Mo(CN)₈] are described. Salts crystalize in the monoclinic or trigonal (Fe) space group. For all complexes, the very unusual "side-on" coordination of Tl to C and N of cyanido ligands is observed and compared to potassium cations. The very strong bonding to cyanido ligands with an 8-13 coordination number of thallium is described and discussed. The difference between potassium and thallium bonding is an indication of the biological activity of thallium and the role of Prussian blue in the thallium detoxification procedure.

Thallium Labeled Citrate-Coated Prussian Blue Nanoparticles as Potential Imaging Agent.

Project description:BackgroundThe aim of this study was to develop and characterize a nanoparticle-based image-contrast platform which is biocompatible, chemically stable, and accessible for radiolabeling with 201Tl. We explored whether this nanoparticle enhanced the T1 signal which might make it an MRI contrast agent as well.MethodsThe physical properties of citrate-coated Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) (iron(II);iron(III);octadecacyanide) doped with 201Tl isotope were characterized with atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurement. PBNP biodistribution was determined by using SPECT and MRI following intravenous administration into C57BL6 mice. Activity concentrations (MBq/cm3) were calculated from the SPECT scans for each dedicated volume of interest (VOI) of liver, kidneys, salivary glands, heart, lungs, and brain.ResultsPBNP accumulation peaked at 2 hours after injection predominantly in the kidneys and the liver followed by a gradual decrease in activity in later time points.ConclusionWe synthetized, characterized, and radiolabeled a Prussian blue-based nanoparticle platform for contrast material applications. Its in vivo radiochemical stability and biodistribution open up the way for further diagnostic applications.

In Vitro and In Vivo Radiotoxicity and Biodistribution of Thallium-201 Delivered to Cancer Cells by Prussian Blue Nanoparticles.

Project description:Thallium-201 (t1/2 = 73 h) emits around 37 Auger and other secondary electrons per decay and is highly radiotoxic when internalized into cancer cells. However, the lack of effective chelators hinders its application in molecular radiotherapy. This study evaluates Prussian blue nanoparticles, coated with citric acid (201Tl-caPBNPs) or chitosan (201Tl-chPBNPs), as a 201Tl delivery vehicle compared with unbound 201Tl+. Cellular uptake and efflux kinetics and radiotoxicity using clonogenic and γH2AX DNA damage assays were evaluated in vitro for both nanoparticle types. Subcellular localization was also assessed using electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Biodistribution of 201Tl-chPBNPs was evaluated in vivo in mice bearing subcutaneous A549 tumor xenografts, using single photon computed tomography imaging and ex vivo tissue counting. Compared with unbound 201Tl+, 201Tl-chPBNPs showed higher cellular uptake, while 201Tl-caPBNP uptake was reduced. Both showed delayed efflux of 201Tl from cancer cells. PBNPs prelocalized within cells enhanced the capture and retention of 201Tl+ ions. Both types of PBNPs accumulated in cytoplasmic vesicular compartments and were not visible in the nuclei. Furthermore, 201Tl-radiolabeled chPBNPs but not 201Tl-caPBNPs showed significantly greater radiotoxicity than unbound 201Tl+ per Becquerel of radiotoxicity provided in media, resulting from their higher uptake and delayed efflux. However, when corrected for the greater activity accumulated in cells and delayed efflux, the radiotoxicity of 201Tl-chPBNPs was lower than that of unbound 201Tl+, possibly due to differences in subcellular localization. These findings highlight the potential of chPBNPs for enhancing the uptake and retention of 201Tl in cancer cells and development of targeted radionuclide therapy.

Successful treatment of a patient with severe thallium poisoning in a coma using Prussian blue and plasma exchange: A case report.

Project description:RationaleThis is the first reported severe thallium poisoning patient successfully treated with Prussian blue (PB) and plasma exchange (PE).Patient concernsA 42-year-old woman in a coma owing to severe thallium poisoning was admitted to our department after day 44 of poisoning. At admission, blood and urine thallium concentrations were 380.0 and 2580.0 ng/mL, respectively.DiagnosisThe patient was diagnosed with toxic encephalopathy induced by thallium poisoning; in addition, she was also diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, respiratory failure, moderate anemia, hypoproteinemia, and electrolyte imbalance based on her chest X-ray, blood gas analysis, Hb level, albumin levels, and serum electrolyte results.InterventionsThe patient was intubated and treated with PB (6600 mg/d, 15 days in total) combined with PE (once daily, 5 days in total) as well as other symptomatic supportive care measures.OutcomesAfter treatments, her blood and urinary thallium concentrations gradually decreased and on the 13th day after admission, the blood thallium concentration decreased to 0 ng/mL. The oxygenation index gradually improved, meantime, the patient gradually regained consciousness, and on the 50th day of admission, the patient's consciousness reverted to a clear-headed state. The patient recovered mostly after 37 months of follow-up.LessonsThrough this case, we learned that the gradual reduction in blood and urine thallium concentration and the patient's improved condition is correlated with PB and PE treatment. For patients with severe thallium poisoning, this treatment method might be effective; but the exact curative effect is unconfirmed, requiring further research to verify.

Synthesis of Hollow Co-Fe Prussian Blue Analogue Cubes by using Silica Spheres as a Sacrificial Template.

Project description:Herein, we report a novel method for the formation of hollow Prussian blue analogue (CoFe-PBA) nanocubes, using spherical silica particles as sacrificial templates. In the first step, silica cores are coated by a CoFe-PBA shell and then removed by etching with hydrofluoric acid (HF). The cubic shape of CoFe-PBA is well-retained even after the removal of the silica cores, resulting in the formation of hollow CoFe-PBA cubes. The specific capacity of the hollow CoFe-PBA nanocubes electrodes is about two times higher than that of solid CoFe-PBA nanocubes as storage materials for sodium ions. Such an improvement in the electrochemical properties can be attributed to their hollow internal nanostructure. The hollow architecture can offer a larger interfacial area between the electrolyte and the electrode, leading to an improvement in the electrochemical activity. This strategy can be applied to develop PBAs with hollow interiors for a wide range of applications.

Mixed Cu-Fe Sulfides Derived from Polydopamine-Coated Prussian Blue Analogue as a Lithium-Ion Battery Electrode.

Project description:Batteries employing transition-metal sulfides enable high-charge storage capacities, but polysulfide shuttling and volume expansion cause structural disintegration and early capacity fading. The design of heterostructures combining metal sulfides and carbon with an optimized morphology can effectively address these issues. Our work introduces dopamine-coated copper Prussian blue (CuPB) analogue as a template to prepare nanostructured mixed copper-iron sulfide electrodes. The material was prepared by coprecipitation of CuPB with in situ dopamine polymerization, followed by thermal sulfidation. Dopamine controls the particle size and favors K-rich CuPB due to its polymerization mechanism. While the presence of the coating prevents particle agglomeration during thermal sulfidation, its thickness demonstrates a key effect on the electrochemical performance of the derived sulfides. After a two-step activation process during cycling, the C-coated KCuFeS2 electrodes showed capacities up to 800 mAh/g at 10 mA/g with nearly 100% capacity recovery after rate handling and a capacity of 380 mAh/g at 250 mA/g after 500 cycles.

Tetra-potassium hepta-cyanido-molybdate(III) dihydrate.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, K(I) (4)[Mo(III)(CN)(7)]·2H(2)O, consists of one [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) anion, four K(+) cations, and two water mol-ecules. The [Mo(III)(CN)(7)](4-) anion has a seven-coordinated capped-trigonal-prismatic coordination geometry. The site-occupancy factors of the disordered water mol-ecules were set at 0.90, 0.60 and 0.50. The H-atom positions could not be determined for two of the water mol-ecules. The H atoms of the water with a site-occupancy factor of 0.90 were refined using O-H and H⋯H distance restraints.

Prussian Blue Mg-Li Hybrid Batteries.

Project description:The major advantage of Mg batteries relies on their promise of employing an Mg metal negative electrode, which offers much higher energy density compared to graphitic carbon. However, the strong coulombic interaction of Mg2+ ions with anions leads to their sluggish diffusion in the solid state, which along with a high desolvation energy, hinders the development of positive electrode materials. To circumvent this limitation, Mg metal negative electrodes can be used in hybrid systems by coupling an Li+ insertion cathode through a dual salt electrolyte. Two "high voltage" Prussian blue analogues (average 2.3 V vs Mg/Mg2+; 3.0 V vs Li/Li+) are investigated as cathode materials and the influence of structural water is shown. Their electrochemical profiles, presenting two voltage plateaus, are explained based on the two unique Fe bonding environments. Structural water has a beneficial impact on the cell voltage. Capacities of 125 mAh g-1 are obtained at a current density of 10 mA g-1 (≈C/10), while stable performance up to 300 cycles is demonstrated at 200 mA g-1 (≈2C). The hybrid cell design is a step toward building a safe and high density energy storage system.

Structural complexity in Prussian blue analogues.

Project description:We survey the most important kinds of structural complexity in Prussian blue analogues, their implications for materials function, and how they might be controlled through judicious choice of composition. We focus on six particular aspects: octahedral tilts, A-site 'slides', Jahn-Teller distortions, A-site species and occupancy, hexacyanometallate vacancies, and framework hydration. The promising K-ion cathode material KxMn[Fe(CN)6]y serves as a recurrent example that illustrates many of these different types of complexity. Our article concludes with a discussion of how the interplay of various distortion mechanisms might be exploited to optimise the performance of this and other related systems, so as to aid in the design of next-generation PBA materials.

Spiderweb-Like Fe-Co Prussian Blue Analogue Nanofibers as Efficient Catalyst for Bisphenol-A Degradation by Activating Peroxymonosulfate.

Project description:Prussian blue and its analogues (PBA) based nanomaterials have been widely applied to removing pollutants in the recent years. However, easy aggregation and poor recycling largely limit their practical applications. In this work, spiderweb-like Fe-Co Prussian blue analogue/polyacrylonitrile (FCPBA/PAN) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and applied to degrading bisphenol-A (BPA) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Detailed characterization demonstrated that a high loading of FCPBA (86% of FCPBA in FCPBA/PAN) was successfully fixed on the PAN nanofibers. 67% of BPA was removed within 240 min when 500 mg·L-1 PMS and 233 mg·L-1 FCPBA/PAN were introduced in 20 mg·L-1 BPA solution at initial pH of 2.8. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical inhibition experiments were performed to identify the possible degradation mechanism. For comparison, a low loading of FCPBA nanofibers (0.6FCPBA/PAN nanofibers, 43% of FCPBA in FCPBA/PAN) were also prepared and tested the catalytic performance. The results showed that the activity of FCPBA/PAN was much higher than 0.6FCPBA/PAN. Furthermore, a FCPBA/PAN packed column was made as a reactor to demonstrate the reusability and stability of FCPBA/PAN nanofibers, which also exhibited the bright future for the industrial application. This work makes it possible to fabricate efficient PBA nanocatalysts with excellent recyclability and promotes the application of PBA in industrial areas.

Predicting Distortion Magnitudes in Prussian Blue Analogues.

Project description:Based on simple electrostatic and harmonic potential considerations, we derive a straightforward expression linking the composition of a Prussian blue analogue (PBA) to its propensity to undergo collective structural distortions. We demonstrate the existence of a threshold value, below which PBAs are undistorted and above which PBAs distort by a degree that is controlled by a geometric tolerance factor. Our analysis rationalizes the presence, absence, and magnitude of distortions in a wide range of PBAs and distinguishes their structural chemistry from that of other hybrid perovskites.
