Electrodeposition of Cobalt Oxides on Carbon Nanotubes for Sensitive Bromhexine Sensing.

ABSTRACT: We develop an electrochemical sensor for the determination of bromhexine hydrochloride (BHC), a widely use mucolytic drug. The sensor is prepared by electrodeposition of cobalt oxides (CoO_x) on a glassy carbon electrode modified with carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). A synergistic effect between CoO_x and SWCNT is observed, leading to a significant improvement in the BHC electrooxidation current. Based on cyclic voltammetry studies at varying scan rates, we conclude that the electrochemical oxidation of BHC is under mixed diffusion-adsorption control. The proposed sensor allows the amperometric determination of BHC in a linear range of 10-500 µM with a low applied voltage of 0.75 V. The designed sensor provides reproducible measurements, is not affected by common interfering substances, and shows excellent performance for the analysis of BHC in pharmaceutical preparations.

Project description:Fe/Ti-oxides-modified-carbon nanotubes CNTs nanocomposites were prepared and tested toward Co removal from solution under different operational conditions. The final performance of the nanocomposites for Co was highly dependent on the type and loaded amount of the oxides. The nanocomposites were characterized by standard methods and the results evidenced that the presence of CNTs hampers the growth of Fe3O4 and TiO2 particles and forming smaller nano-particles leading to better Co removal from solution. Analysis of isotherms at different temperatures indicated that Co retention was two-fold increased upon adding Ti-oxides up to 90.2%. All isotherms were fairly presented using Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm and most surfaces have high heterogeneity particularly after deposition of oxides. The combined influence of the factors was investigated by running a multivariate analysis. An empirical equation was generated by principal component analysis (PCA) for predicting Co retention assuming different relationships and the binary-interaction behavior between factors was the most dominant: Co retention (mg/g) = 5.12 + 1.25Conc + 1.47Temp - 1.38CNT% - 6.03Ti% - 5.03Fe% - 0.01Conc2 + 0.12Temp2 - 0.55CNT%2 - 1.53Ti%2 - 3.44Fe%2 + 0.17Conc × Temp + 0.07Conc × CNT% + 0.07Conc × Ti% + 0.10Conc × Fe% + 0.21Temp × CNT% + 0.10Temp × Ti% + 0.17Temp × Fe% - 1.67CNT% × Ti% - 1.45CNT% × Fe% - 4.11Ti% × Fe%. The most dominant factors on Co retention were temperature and concentration (positive linear correlation) and the positive interaction between temperature/concentration and temperature/CNTs mass. PCA indicated that the coefficient Temp × CNTs (+0.21) was higher than Temp × Ti% (+0.10). The negative coefficients of Ti/Fe with CNTs (1.45-4.11) indicated better Co retention at higher Ti/Fe loads and lower mass of CNTs. The results support that fact that incorporation of CNTs with Ti/Fe oxides may have a positive synergic impact on Co retention.

Project description:In this research, the synergistic antiviral effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal oxides (MO) in the form of novel hybrid structures (MO-CNTs) are presented. Raw CNTs, Ni(OH)2, Fe2O3 and MnO2, as well as Ni(OH)2-CNT, Fe2O3-CNT and MnO2-CNT were explored in this study against Escherichia. coli MS2 bacteriophage, which was used as a virus surrogate. The nano particles were synthesized and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Kinetic parameters such as the LD50 (lethal dose to kill 50% of the population), T50 and T80 (time taken to kill 50% and 80% of the population), SGR (specific growth rate) and IRD (initial rate of deactivation of the population) were also studied to examine the antiviral efficacy of these nanomaterials. Among all the nanomaterials, Ni(OH)2-CNT was the most effective antiviral agent followed by Fe2O3-CNT, MnO2-CNT, raw CNTs, Ni(OH)2, Fe2O3 and MnO2. When comparing the metal oxide-CNTs to the raw CNTs, the average enhancement was 20.2%. The average antiviral activity enhancement of the MO-CNTs were between 50 and 54% higher than the MO itself. When compared to the raw CNTs, the average enhancement over all the MO-CNTs was 20.2%. The kinetic studies showed that the LD50 of Ni(OH)2-CNT was the lowest (16µg/mL), which implies that it was the most toxic of all the compounds studied. The LD50 of Ni(OH)2, Fe2O3 and MnO2 were 17.3×, 14.5× and 10.8× times greater than their corresponding hybrids with the CNTs. The synergistic mechanism involved the entrapment of phage viruses by the nano structured CNTs leading to structural damage along with toxicity to phage from the release of MO ions. The metal oxide-CNT nano hybrids developed in this project are promising candidates in applications such as antiviral coatings, nanocomposites, adsorbents and as components of personal protection gears.

Project description:There is an ever-growing interest in the detection of carbon dioxide (CO2) due to health risks associated with CO2 emissions. Hence, there is a need for low-power and low-cost CO2 sensors for efficient monitoring and sensing of CO2 analyte molecules in the environment. This study reports on the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that are functionalized using polyethyleneimine and starch (PEI-starch) in order to fabricate a PEI-starch functionalized SWCNT sensor for reversible CO2 detection under ambient room conditions (T = 25 °C; RH = 53%). Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are used to analyze the physiochemical properties of the as-synthesized gas sensor. Due to the large specific surface area of SWCNTs and the efficient CO2 capturing capabilities of the amine-rich PEI layer, the sensor possesses a high CO2 adsorption capacity. When exposed to varying CO2 concentrations between 50 and 500 ppm, the sensor response exhibits a linear relationship with an increase in analyte concentration, allowing it to operate reliably throughout a broad range of CO2 concentrations. The sensing mechanism of the PEI-starch-functionalized SWCNT sensor is based on the reversible acid-base equilibrium chemical reactions between amino groups of PEI and adsorbed CO2 molecules, which produce carbamates and bicarbonates. Due to the presence of hygroscopic starch that attracts more water molecules to the surface of SWCNTs, the adsorption capacity of CO2 gas molecules is enhanced. After multiple cycles of analyte exposure, the sensor recovers to its initial resistance level via a UV-assisted recovery approach. In addition, the sensor exhibits great stability and reliability in multiple analyte gas exposures as well as excellent selectivity to carbon dioxide over other interfering gases such as carbon monoxide, oxygen, and ammonia, thereby showing the potential to monitor CO2 levels in various infrastructure.
