Electrochemically Promoted Benzylation of [60]Fullerooxazolidinone.

ABSTRACT: Benzylation of the electrochemically generated dianion from N-p-tolyl-[60]fullerooxazolidinone with benzyl bromide provides three products with different addition patterns. The product distribution can be dramatically altered by varying the reaction conditions. Based on spectral characterizations, these products have been assigned as mono-benzylated 1,4-adduct and bis-benzylated 1,2,3,16- and 1,4,9,25-adducts, respectively. The assigned 1,2,3,16-adduct has been further established by X-ray diffraction analysis. It is believed that the 1,4-adduct is obtained by decarboxylative benzylation of the dianionic species, while bis-benzylated 1,2,3,16- and 1,4,9,25-adducts are achieved via a rearrangement process. In addition, the electrochemical properties of these products have been studied.

Project description:The selective oxidation of amines into imines is a priority research topic in organic synthesis and has attracted much attention over the past few decades. However, the oxidation of amines generally suffers from the drawback of transition-metal, even noble-metal catalysts. Thus, the strategy of metal- and oxidant-free selective synthesis of imines is highly desirable yet largely unmet. This paper unravels a metal-free and external oxidant-free electrochemical strategy for the oxidative coupling methodology of amines. This general transformation is compatible with various functional amines and led to functionalized imines in moderate to satisfactory yields.

Reactions of [60]fullerene with alkynes promoted by OH.

Project description:In the current work, the reactions of [60]fullerene with alkynes promoted by OH- (base) are addressed. The treatment of C60 with alkynes in the presence of TBAOH produces alkynylation products (R-C60-H) with high selectivity in o-DCB at 100 °C. Plausible reaction mechanisms were proposed. This work provides a convenient and environmental friendly method for the functionalization of fullerenes.

Electrode-Supported Protonic Ceramic Electrolysis Cells for Electrochemically Promoted Ammonia Synthesis at Intermediate Temperatures.

Project description:Protonic ceramic electrolysis cells (PCECs) have attracted attention for their applications in electrochemical ammonia synthesis, but their low Faradaic efficiency and thermodynamic constraints at high operating temperatures have led to low ammonia formation rates. In this work, electrode-supported PCECs with a noble-metal-free Ni-BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ cathode and a spin-coated proton-conducting electrolyte were developed for ammonia electrosynthesis, conducted in a single-chamber reactor cofed with N2 and H2. Ammonia formation rates increased non-Faradaically with applied voltage, reaching up to 1.1 × 10-8 mol s-1 cm-2 at 400 °C, which corresponds approximately to a 150 °C reduction in operating temperature compared to previously reported works conducted in mixed N2 and H2. The improved performance at intermediate temperatures by using a Ni catalyst is attributed to the electrochemical promotion of catalysis upon cathodic polarization. By fabrication of a cell with low Ohmic losses and improved contact resistance at the anode-electrolyte interface, sufficient cathodic polarization to accelerate ammonia formation was achieved, even at 400 °C. A combined water electrolysis and ammonia synthesis system is proposed, where the hydrogen byproduct from water electrolysis can be efficiently utilized via a recycling process; such a system requires enhanced ammonia formation in a mixed N2/H2 atmosphere, as demonstrated in this work.

Project description:We report an approach for the synthesis of benzothiophene motifs under electrochemical conditions by the reaction of sulfonhydrazides with internal alkynes. Upon the formation of a quaternary spirocyclization intermediate by the selective ipso-addition instead of an ortho-attack, the S-migration process was rationalized to lead to the products. Computational studies revealed the selectivity and the compatibility of drug molecules showcased the potential application of the protocols.

Project description:In this study, methanofullerenes and 2',3'-dihydrofuran C60 derivatives were selectively synthesized in high yields via the reactions of C60 with β-keto esters under mild conditions by controlling the addition sequence and molar ratio of iodine and base. The structures of the products were determined by spectroscopic characterization. Moreover, a possible reaction mechanism for the selective formation of fullerene derivatives was proposed.

Benzylation of Imines with Activated Boronate Nucleophiles.

Project description:Benzylation reactions of N-tosyl imines and N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines using benzylboronic acid pinacol ester are reported. s-Butyllithium was used to activate the boronic ester, rendering it nucleophilic. The reaction was compatible with electronically diverse substituents on the imine in both substrate classes. Good diastereoselectivity was observed in additions to N-tert-butylsulfinylaldimines. The diastereoselectivity observed in these reactions is consistent with an open transition state for the addition. Examples of a secondary alkylboronic ester nucleophile and an N-tert-butanesulfinyl trifluoromethylketimine electrophile are also included.

Light-Driven Enantioselective Organocatalytic β-Benzylation of Enals.

Project description:A photochemical organocatalytic strategy for the direct enantioselective β-benzylation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes is reported. The chemistry capitalizes upon the light-triggered enolization of 2-alkyl-benzophenones to afford hydroxy-o-quinodinomethanes. These fleeting intermediates are stereoselectively intercepted by chiral iminium ions, transiently formed upon condensation of a secondary amine catalyst with enals. Density functional theory (DFT) studies provided an explanation for why the reaction proceeds through an unconventional Michael-type addition manifold, instead of a classical cycloaddition mechanism and subsequent ring-opening.

Enantioselective α-benzylation of aldehydes via photoredox organocatalysis.

Project description:The first enantioselective aldehyde α-benzylation using electron-deficient aryl and heteroaryl substrates has been accomplished. The productive merger of a chiral imidazolidinone organocatalyst and a commercially available iridium photoredox catalyst in the presence of household fluorescent light directly affords the desired homobenzylic stereogenicity in good to excellent yield and enantioselectivity. The utility of this methodology has been demonstrated via rapid access to an enantioenriched drug target for angiogenesis suppression.
