Lipid profiling using Raman and a modified support vector machine algorithm.

ABSTRACT: Lipid droplets are dynamic organelles that play important cellular roles. They are composed of a phospholipid membrane and a core of triglycerides and sterol esters. Fatty acids have important roles in phospholipid membrane formation, signaling, and synthesis of triglycerides as energy storage. Better non-invasive tools for profiling and measuring cellular lipids are needed. Here we demonstrate the potential of Raman spectroscopy to determine with high accuracy the composition changes of the fatty acids and cholesterol found in the lipid droplets of prostate cancer cells treated with various fatty acids. The methodology uses a modified least squares fitting (LSF) routine that uses highly discriminatory wavenumbers between the fatty acids present in the sample using a support vector machine algorithm. Using this new LSF routine, Raman micro-spectroscopy can become a better non-invasive tool for profiling and measuring fatty acids and cholesterol for cancer biology.

Modified Support Vector Machine for Detecting Stress Level Using EEG Signals.

Project description:Stress is categorized as a condition of mental strain or pressure approaches because of upsetting or requesting conditions. There are various sources of stress initiation. Researchers consider human cerebrum as the primary wellspring of stress. To study how each individual encounters stress in different forms, researchers conduct surveys and monitor it. The paper presents the fusion of 5 algorithms to enhance the accuracy for detection of mental stress using EEG signals. The Whale Optimization Algorithm has been modified to select the optimal kernel in the SVM classifier for stress detection. An integrated set of algorithms (NLM, DCT, and MBPSO) has been used for preprocessing, feature extraction, and selection. The proposed algorithm has been tested on EEG signals collected from 14 subjects to identify the stress level. The proposed approach was validated using accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score with values of 96.36%, 96.84%, 90.8%, and 97.96% and was found to be better than the existing ones. The algorithm may be useful to psychiatrists and health consultants for diagnosing the stress level.

A Digital Shade-Matching Device for Dental Color Determination Using the Support Vector Machine Algorithm.

Project description:In this study, we developed a digital shade-matching device for dental color determination using the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. Shade-matching was performed using shade tabs. For the hardware, the typically used intraoral camera was modified to apply the cross-polarization scheme and block the light from outside, which can lead to shade-matching errors. For reliable experiments, a precise robot arm with ±0.1 mm position repeatability and a specially designed jig to fix the position of the VITA 3D-master (3D) shade tabs were used. For consistent color performance, color calibration was performed with five standard colors having color values as the mean color values of the five shade tabs of the 3D. By using the SVM algorithm, hyperplanes and support vectors for 3D shade tabs were obtained with a database organized using five developed devices. Subsequently, shade matching was performed by measuring 3D shade tabs, as opposed to real teeth, with three additional devices. On average, more than 90% matching accuracy and a less than 1% failure rate were achieved with all devices for 10 measurements. In addition, we compared the classification algorithm with other classification algorithms, such as logistic regression, random forest, and k-nearest neighbors, using the leave-pair-out cross-validation method to verify the classification performance of the SVM algorithm. Our proposed scheme can be an optimum solution for the quantitative measurement of tooth color with high accuracy.

Detection and Classification of Myocardial Infarction with Support Vector Machine Classifier Using Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm.

Project description:BackgroundProviding a noninvasive, rapid, and cost-effective approach to diagnose of myocardial infarction (MI) is essential in the early stages of electrocardiogram (ECG) signaling. In this article, we proposed the new optimization method for support vector machine (SVM) classifier to MI classification.MethodsAfter preprocessing ECG signal and noise removal, three features such as Q-wave integral, T-wave integral, and QRS-complex integral have been extracted in this study. After that, different statistical tests have evaluated the matrix of these features. To more accurately detect and classify the MI disease, optimizing the SVM classification parameters using the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) was first used in this study (that called SVM-GOA).ResultsAfter applying the GOA on the SVM classifier for all three kernels, the final results of MI detection for sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 100% ± 0%, 100% ± 0%, and 100% ± 0%, respectively. The final results of different MI types' classification after applying the GOA on SVM for polynomial kernel were obtained 100% ± 0%, 97.37% ± 0%, and 94.2% ± 0.2% for sensitivity and specificity and accuracy, respectively. However, the results of both linear and RBF kernels that were used for the SVM classifier method have also shown a significant increase after using GOA.ConclusionThis article's results show the highly desirable effect of applying a GOA to optimize different kernel parameters used in the SVM classifier for accurate detection and classification of MI. The proposed algorithm's final results show that the proposed system has a relatively higher performance than other previous studies.

Compressor performance modelling method based on support vector machine nonlinear regression algorithm.

Project description:To overcome the difficulty of having only part of compressor characteristic maps including on-design operating point, and accurately calculate compressor thermodynamic performance under variable working conditions, this paper proposes a novel compressor performance modelling method based on support vector machine nonlinear regression algorithm. It is compared with the other three neural network algorithms (i.e. back propagation (BP), radial basis function (RBF) and Elman neural networks) from the perspective of interpolation and extrapolation accuracy as well as calculation time, to prove the validity of the proposed method. Application analyses indicate that the proposed method has better interpolation and extrapolation performance than the other three neural networks. In terms of flow characteristic map representation, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the extrapolation performance at higher and lower speed operating area by the proposed method is 0.89% and 2.57%, respectively. And the total RMSE by the proposed method is 2.72%, which is more accurate by 47% than the Elman algorithm. For efficiency characteristic map representation, the RMSE of the extrapolation performance at higher and lower speed operating area by the proposed method is 2.85% and 1.22%, respectively. And the total RMSE by the proposed method is 1.81%, which is more accurate by 35% than the BP algorithm. Moreover, the proposed method has better real-time performance compared with the other three neural network algorithms.

A Novel Classification Algorithm Based on Incremental Semi-Supervised Support Vector Machine.

Project description:For current computational intelligence techniques, a major challenge is how to learn new concepts in changing environment. Traditional learning schemes could not adequately address this problem due to a lack of dynamic data selection mechanism. In this paper, inspired by human learning process, a novel classification algorithm based on incremental semi-supervised support vector machine (SVM) is proposed. Through the analysis of prediction confidence of samples and data distribution in a changing environment, a "soft-start" approach, a data selection mechanism and a data cleaning mechanism are designed, which complete the construction of our incremental semi-supervised learning system. Noticeably, with the ingenious design procedure of our proposed algorithm, the computation complexity is reduced effectively. In addition, for the possible appearance of some new labeled samples in the learning process, a detailed analysis is also carried out. The results show that our algorithm does not rely on the model of sample distribution, has an extremely low rate of introducing wrong semi-labeled samples and can effectively make use of the unlabeled samples to enrich the knowledge system of classifier and improve the accuracy rate. Moreover, our method also has outstanding generalization performance and the ability to overcome the concept drift in a changing environment.

Diagnosis by Volatile Organic Compounds in Exhaled Breath from Lung Cancer Patients Using Support Vector Machine Algorithm.

Project description:Monitoring exhaled breath is a very attractive, noninvasive screening technique for early diagnosis of diseases, especially lung cancer. However, the technique provides insufficient accuracy because the exhaled air has many crucial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at very low concentrations (ppb level). We analyzed the breath exhaled by lung cancer patients and healthy subjects (controls) using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and performed a subsequent statistical analysis to diagnose lung cancer based on the combination of multiple lung cancer-related VOCs. We detected 68 VOCs as marker species using GC/MS analysis. We reduced the number of VOCs and used support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to classify the samples. We observed that a combination of five VOCs (CHN, methanol, CH₃CN, isoprene, 1-propanol) is sufficient for 89.0% screening accuracy, and hence, it can be used for the design and development of a desktop GC-sensor analysis system for lung cancer.

Analysis of Asperger Syndrome Using Genetic-Evolutionary Random Support Vector Machine Cluster.

Project description:Asperger syndrome (AS) is subtype of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Diagnosis and pathological analysis of AS through resting-state fMRI data is one of the hot topics in brain science. We employed a new model called the genetic-evolutionary random Support Vector Machine cluster (GE-RSVMC) to classify AS and normal people, and search for lesions. The model innovatively integrates the methods of the cluster and genetic evolution to improve the performance of the model. We randomly selected samples and sample features to construct GE-RSVMC, and then used the cluster to classify and extract lesions according to classification results. The model was validated by data of 157 participants (86 AS and 71 health controls) in ABIDE database. The classification accuracy of the model reached to 97.5% and we discovered the brain regions with significant differences, such as the Angular gyrus (ANG.R), Precuneus (PCUN.R), Caudate nucleus (CAU.R), Cuneus (CUN.R) and so on. Our method provides a new perspective for the diagnosis and treatment of AS, and a universal framework for other brain science research as the model has excellent generalization performance.

Segmentation of Doppler optical coherence tomography signatures using a support-vector machine.

Project description:When processing Doppler optical coherence tomography images, there is a need to segment the Doppler signatures of the vessels. This can be used for visualization, for finding the center point of the flow areas or to facilitate the quantitative analysis of the vessel flow. We propose the use of a support-vector machine classifier in order to segment the flow. It uses the phase values of the Doppler image as well as texture information. We show that superior results compared to conventional simple threshold-based methods can be achieved in conditions of significant phase noise, which inhibit the use of a simple threshold of the phase values.

Feature selection for support vector regression using a genetic algorithm.

Project description:Support vector regression (SVR) is particularly beneficial when the outcome and predictors are nonlinearly related. However, when many covariates are available, the method's flexibility can lead to overfitting and an overall loss in predictive accuracy. To overcome this drawback, we develop a feature selection method for SVR based on a genetic algorithm that iteratively searches across potential subsets of covariates to find those that yield the best performance according to a user-defined fitness function. We evaluate the performance of our feature selection method for SVR, comparing it to alternate methods including LASSO and random forest, in a simulation study. We find that our method yields higher predictive accuracy than SVR without feature selection. Our method outperforms LASSO when the relationship between covariates and outcome is nonlinear. Random forest performs equivalently to our method in some scenarios, but more poorly when covariates are correlated. We apply our method to predict donor kidney function 1 year after transplant using data from the United Network for Organ Sharing national registry.

Ecological footprint model using the support vector machine technique.

Project description:The per capita ecological footprint (EF) is one of the most widely recognized measures of environmental sustainability. It aims to quantify the Earth's biological resources required to support human activity. In this paper, we summarize relevant previous literature, and present five factors that influence per capita EF. These factors are: National gross domestic product (GDP), urbanization (independent of economic development), distribution of income (measured by the Gini coefficient), export dependence (measured by the percentage of exports to total GDP), and service intensity (measured by the percentage of service to total GDP). A new ecological footprint model based on a support vector machine (SVM), which is a machine-learning method based on the structural risk minimization principle from statistical learning theory was conducted to calculate the per capita EF of 24 nations using data from 123 nations. The calculation accuracy was measured by average absolute error and average relative error. They were 0.004883 and 0.351078% respectively. Our results demonstrate that the EF model based on SVM has good calculation performance.
