Project description:Hydraulic transients in long-distance pressurized water pipelines significantly impact their normal operation. This study develops a one-dimensional mathematical model for pressurized water pipelines using the method of characteristics and incorporates water hammer equations for dual-pipeline systems. The model is validated with experimental data, and simulations are conducted under real engineering conditions, focusing on valve closure operations. The analysis examines the transient responses for varying valve closure times (T) and the effect of installing surge tanks. Results show that increasing valve closure time and installing surge tanks both mitigate water hammer impacts. Specifically, when valve closure time exceeds 300 seconds, surge tanks reduce maximum pressure below the pipeline's tolerance (Pmax) and decrease the number of nodes experiencing damaging negative pressures. This model effectively simulates hydraulic transients in dual-pipeline systems and provides a foundation for developing protective measures for pipeline operations.

Project description:Water hammer (WH) is a phenomenon characterized by the rapid opening or closing of valves or pumps in pipelines, resulting in a disruptive noise, intense vibrations, and potential damage to pipes, fittings, structures, and even human safety. While WH arresters are commonly employed to mitigate this issue in smaller plumbing systems, alternative solutions are required for larger applications like power plants. Researchers have proposed the utilization of pipe materials with a low modulus of elasticity in areas prone to WH events, as these materials possess the capability to absorb a significant portion of the resulting vibrations. This study focuses on investigating the influence of pressure and strain induced by the WH phenomenon. Experimental data collected from measurements using a specially designed test rig, as well as numerical and dimensionless analyses applied to the same rig, are employed to examine this effect. The experimental and numerical investigations encompass a range of flow rates and pressures. Five pipe materials, namely Galvanized steel, Copper, uPVC, PPr, and GRP, were selected for evaluation. The results indicate a deviation between the numerical and experimental results of WH frequency which can be explained from the pipeline rigidity. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis was performed to analyze the frequency components of the pressure transients resulting from water hammer events in the different pipe materials. The results indicate that pipe materials with lower elastic modulus, such as PPr and uPVC, exhibit reduced WH effects compared to materials with higher elastic modulus, such as steel. This research highlights the importance of selecting appropriate pipe materials for pressure pipelines in order to mitigate the dangers associated with WH. The results of the FFT analysis revealed distinct frequency responses for each material, illustrating how their unique viscoelastic properties affect the transient behavior.

Project description:In the process of long-distance pressurized pipeline water transmission, in addition to the problem of water hammer hazards that can easily occur in the pipeline, the safety of the pipeline before the pump also presents hidden dangers. When excessive water hammer pressure occurs in the whole pipeline, it can easily lead to pipeline leakage or even pipe bursting. In this work, we analyze the pressure head in the pipeline of a long-distance pumping station using modeling calculations from KY PIPE software, combined with data from an actual water transmission project, to study the effect of stopping the pump water hammer. The use of two-phase check valves can effectively solve the problem of pump inversion when the pump water hammer stops, and the installation of an air valve and regulating tower can effectively reduce the pressure head of the pipeline. At the same time, the negative pressure in the pipeline can be eliminated, and the installation of a water hammer relief valve can effectively reduce the volume of the bladder surge tank by 77.5%. The results show that the use of joint protection equipment in a long-distance water transmission project has a better effect on the water hammer pressure in the pipeline. It is proposed that the joint protection equipment device can effectively reduce the volume of the surge tank. This provides reference significance for similar projects.

Project description:Femtosecond (fs) x-ray pulses are a key tool to study the structure and dynamics of matter on its natural length and time scale. To complement radio-frequency accelerator-based large-scale facilities, novel laser-based mechanisms hold promise for compact laboratory-scale x-ray sources. Laser-plasma driven undulator radiation in particular offers high peak-brightness, optically synchronized few-fs pulses reaching into the few-nanometer (nm) regime. To date, however, few experiments have successfully demonstrated plasma-driven undulator radiation. Those that have, typically operated at single and comparably long wavelengths. Here we demonstrate plasma-driven undulator radiation with octave-spanning tuneability at discrete wavelengths reaching from 13 nm to 4 nm. Studying spontaneous undulator radiation is an important step towards a plasma-driven free-electron laser. Our specific setup creates a photon pulse, which closely resembles the plasma electron bunch length and charge profile and thus might enable novel methods to characterize the longitudinal electron phase space.

Project description:Attosecond pulses at photon energies that cover the principal absorption edges of the building blocks of materials are a prerequisite for time-resolved probing of the triggering events leading to electronic dynamics such as exciton formation and annihilation. We demonstrate experimentally the isolation of individual attosecond pulses at the carbon K-shell edge (284 eV) in the soft X-ray water window with pulse duration below 400 as and with a bandwidth supporting a 30-as pulse duration. Our approach is based on spatiotemporal isolation of long-wavelength-driven harmonics and validates a straightforward and scalable approach for robust and reproducible attosecond pulse isolation.

Project description:We demonstrate photoacoustic wave propagation with a plane wavefront in liquid water using a terahertz (THz) laser pulse. The THz light can effectively generate the photoacoustic wave in water because of strong absorption via a stretching vibration mode of the hydrogen bonding network. The excitation of a large-area water surface irradiated by loosely focused THz light produces a plane photoacoustic wave. This is in contrast with conventional methods using absorbers or plasma generation using near-infrared laser light. The photoacoustic wave generation and plane wave propagation are observed using a system with a THz free-electron laser and shadowgraph imaging. The plane photoacoustic wave is generated by incident THz light with a small radiant exposure of < 1 mJ/cm2 and delivered 600 times deeper than the penetration depth of THz light for water. The THz-light-induced plane photoacoustic wave offers great advantages to non-invasive operations for industrial and biological applications as demonstrated in our previous report (Yamazaki et al. in Sci Rep 10:9008, 2020).

Project description:Hypothenar hammer syndrome is a rare but serious cause of digital ischemia and morbidity. Presented here is a case of a manual laborer who had symptoms of digital ischemia after acute hyperextension injury to the ring finger. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed thrombosed ulnar artery aneurysm. Etiology, presentation, and current treatments are reviewed.

Project description:Extinct species of Malleodectes gen. nov. from Middle to Late Miocene deposits of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia are enigmatic, highly specialized, probably snail-eating marsupials. Dentally, they closely resemble a bizarre group of living heterodont, wet forest scincid lizards from Australia (Cyclodomorphus) that may well have outcompeted them as snail-eaters when the closed forests of central Australia began to decline. Although there are scincids known from the same Miocene deposits at Riversleigh, these are relatively plesiomorphic, generalized feeders. This appears to be the most striking example known of dental convergence and possible competition between a mammal and a lizard, which in the long run worked out better for the lizards.

Project description:PurposeTo develop short water suppression sequences for 7 T magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging, with mitigation of subject-specific transmit RF field ( B1+) inhomogeneity.MethodsPatient-tailored spiral in-out spectral-spatial saturation pulses were designed for a three-pulse WET water suppression sequence. The pulses' identical spatial subpulses were designed using patient-specific B1+ maps and a spiral in-out excitation k-space trajectory. The subpulse train was weighted by a spectral envelope that was root-flipped to minimize peak RF demand. The pulses were validated in in vivo experiments that acquired high resolution magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging data, using a crusher coil for fast lipid suppression. Residual water signals and MR spectra were compared between the proposed tailored sequence and a conventional WET sequence.ResultsReplacing conventional spectrally-selective pulses with tailored spiral in-out spectral-spatial pulses reduced mean water residual from 5.88 to 2.52% (57% improvement). Pulse design time was less then 0.4 s. The pulses' specific absorption rate were compatible with magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging TRs under 300 ms, which enabled spectra of fine in plane spatial resolution (5 mm) with good quality to be measured in 7.5 min.ConclusionTailored spiral in-out spectral-spatial water suppression enables efficient high resolution magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging in the brain.
