Emerging Trends in Arctic Solar Absorption.

ABSTRACT: Recent satellite observations confirm that the Arctic is absorbing more solar radiation now than at the start of this century in response to declining Arctic sea ice and snow covers. Trends in the solar radiation input to Arctic ocean and land surfaces now each exceed interannual variability at the 95% confidence level, although all-sky trends have taken 20%-40% longer to emerge compared to clear-sky conditions. Clouds reduce mean solar absorption and secular trends over both land and ocean, but the effect of clouds on natural variability depends on the underlying surface. While clouds increase the time needed to unambiguously identify trends in nearly all Arctic regions, their masking effects are strongest over oceans. Clouds have extended the time to emergence of already observed clear-sky trends beyond the existing 21 years Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System record in half of eight Arctic seas, supporting the need for continued satellite-based radiative flux observations over the Arctic.

Coffee-based colloids for direct solar absorption.

Project description:Despite their promising thermo-physical properties for direct solar absorption, carbon-based nanocolloids present some drawbacks, among which the unpleasant property of being potentially cytotoxic and harmful to the environment. In this work, a sustainable, stable and inexpensive colloid based on coffee is synthesized and its photo-thermal properties investigated. The proposed colloid consists of distilled water, Arabica coffee, glycerol and copper sulphate, which provide enhanced properties along with biocompatibility. The photo-thermal performance of the proposed fluid for direct solar absorption is analysed for different dilutions and compared with that of a traditional flat-plate collector. Tailor-made collectors, opportunely designed and realized via 3D-printing technique, were used for the experimental tests. The results obtained in field conditions, in good agreement with two different proposed models, show similar performance of the volumetric absorption using the proposed coffee-based colloids as compared to the classical systems based on a highly-absorbing surface. These results may encourage further investigations on simple, biocompatible and inexpensive colloids for direct solar absorption.

Solar cyclic variability can modulate winter Arctic climate.

Project description:This study investigates the role of the eleven-year solar cycle on the Arctic climate during 1979-2016. It reveals that during those years, when the winter solar sunspot number (SSN) falls below 1.35 standard deviations (or mean value), the Arctic warming extends from the lower troposphere to high up in the upper stratosphere and vice versa when SSN is above. The warming in the atmospheric column reflects an easterly zonal wind anomaly consistent with warm air and positive geopotential height anomalies for years with minimum SSN and vice versa for the maximum. Despite the inherent limitations of statistical techniques, three different methods - Compositing, Multiple Linear Regression and Correlation - all point to a similar modulating influence of the sun on winter Arctic climate via the pathway of Arctic Oscillation. Presenting schematics, it discusses the mechanisms of how solar cycle variability influences the Arctic climate involving the stratospheric route. Compositing also detects an opposite solar signature on Eurasian snow-cover, which is a cooling during Minimum years, while warming in maximum. It is hypothesized that the reduction of ice in the Arctic and a growth in Eurasia, in recent winters, may in part, be a result of the current weaker solar cycle.

Broadband solar absorption enhancement via periodic nanostructuring of electrodes.

Project description:Solution processed colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells have great potential for large area low-cost photovoltaics. However, light utilization remains low mainly due to the tradeoff between small carrier transport lengths and longer infrared photon absorption lengths. Here, we demonstrate a bottom-illuminated periodic nanostructured CQD solar cell that enhances broadband absorption without compromising charge extraction efficiency of the device. We use finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations to study the nanostructure for implementation in a realistic device and then build proof-of-concept nanostructured solar cells, which exhibit a broadband absorption enhancement over the wavelength range of λ = 600 to 1,100 nm, leading to a 31% improvement in overall short-circuit current density compared to a planar device containing an approximately equal volume of active material. Remarkably, the improved current density is achieved using a light-absorber volume less than half that typically used in the best planar devices.

Temporal trends of contaminants in Arctic human populations.

Project description:The first Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) report was published in 1998 and followed by three assessment reports of human health (AMAP 2003, 2009 and 2015). The focus area of the AMAP reports was to monitor levels of environmental contaminants in the Arctic and to assess the health effects connected with detected levels in Arctic countries. This review gives an overview of temporal trends of contaminants and their health effects in humans of the Arctic based on data published by AMAP, as well as Russian scientific literature. Several time series of 31 contaminants in humans of the Arctic from different cohorts are reported. The lengths of time series and periods covered differ from each other. International restrictions have decreased the levels of most persistent organic pollutants in humans and food webs. Percentage changes for contaminants in human biological matrices (blood samples from children, mothers and males and breast milk samples) for the period of sampling showed declining trends in most of the monitored Arctic locations, with the exception of oxychlordane, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE153) and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs).

Rapid shift in greenhouse forcing of emerging arctic peatlands.

Project description:In this study, we hypothesised that the actual development stage (i.e., current age of the ecosystem) is a determining factor for the magnitude of methane production and emissions in young, northern high-latitude peatlands. We demonstrate that the earliest development of peat soil imposes a sink-to-source shift in the greenhouse warming potential of emerging peatlands in response to climate change that holds feedback mechanisms of importance for short-term (< 100 years) climate warming.

This Perspective article describes some emerging trends and recent findings in the area of metalloprotein inhibitor discovery and development. In particular, increasing recognition of the importance of the metal-ligand interactions in these systems calls for more input and consideration from the bioinorganic community to address questions traditionally confined to the medicinal chemistry community.

GaN intermediate band solar cells with Mn-doped absorption layer.

Project description:The effect of Mn concentration on the optical properties of Mn-doped layers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy is investigated. The Mn-doped GaN layers exhibite a typical transmittance spectrum with a distinct dip around 820 nm which is attributed to the transition of electrons between the edge of valence band and the Mn-related states within the bandgap. In addition, electroluminescence (EL) spectra obtained from the bipolar devices with Mn-doped GaN active layer also show that considerable Mn-related energy states existed in the bandgap. The position of the Mn-related energy states in the GaN is first evaluated via EL spectra. In addition to the absorption of band edge, the Mn-related energy states behaving like an intermediate band cause an additional sub-band gap absorption. Consequently, the fabricated GaN-based solar cells using Mn-doed GaN as the absorption layer exhibit photocurrent higher than the control devices without Mn doping. Under one-sun air mass 1.5 G testing condition, the short-circuit current of the Mn-doed GaN solar cells can be enhanced by a magnitude of 10 times compared with the cells without Mn doping.

Fullerene-Based Heterojunctions for Non-Selective Absorption Transparent Solar Cells.

Project description:Transparent photovoltaic (TPV) devices have great potential to be applied as smart windows in construction and agriculture fields. TPVs with an average visible transmission (AVT) exceeding 50% are among the strong candidates to build lighting windows since the champion efficiency has already exceeded 10%. However, it is still a challenge in TPVs that semiconductors are generally expensive and transparency is difficult to further enhance, particularly for device AVT exceeding 70%. In this work, we develop a set of fullerene-based heterojunctions to harvest the light. By utilizing the low-cost fullerene as the light-absorbing material and combining it with the transparent electrode, the fabricated TPV device can achieve an AVT of 72.1% with a PCE exceeding 1%. Notably, the device with an AVT of 82% is also successfully demonstrated. This study provides an effective approach for building low-cost and efficient TPV devices.

Solar superstorm of AD 774 recorded subannually by Arctic tree rings.

Project description:Recently, a rapid increase in radiocarbon (14C) was observed in Japanese tree rings at AD 774/775. Various explanations for the anomaly have been offered, such as a supernova, a γ-ray burst, a cometary impact, or an exceptionally large Solar Particle Event (SPE). However, evidence of the origin and exact timing of the event remains incomplete. In particular, a key issue of latitudinal dependence of the 14C intensity has not been addressed yet. Here, we show that the event was most likely caused by the Sun and occurred during the spring of AD 774. Particularly, the event intensities from various locations show a strong correlation with the latitude, demonstrating a particle-induced 14C poleward increase, in accord with the solar origin of the event. Furthermore, both annual 14C data and carbon cycle modelling, and separate earlywood and latewood 14C measurements, confine the photosynthetic carbon fixation to around the midsummer.

Circumpolar status of Arctic ptarmigan: Population dynamics and trends.

Project description:Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) and willow ptarmigan (L. lagopus) are Arctic birds with a circumpolar distribution but there is limited knowledge about their status and trends across their circumpolar distribution. Here, we compiled information from 90 ptarmigan study sites from 7 Arctic countries, where almost half of the sites are still monitored. Rock ptarmigan showed an overall negative trend on Iceland and Greenland, while Svalbard and Newfoundland had positive trends, and no significant trends in Alaska. For willow ptarmigan, there was a negative trend in mid-Sweden and eastern Russia, while northern Fennoscandia, North America and Newfoundland had no significant trends. Both species displayed some periods with population cycles (short 3-6 years and long 9-12 years), but cyclicity changed through time for both species. We propose that simple, cost-efficient systematic surveys that capture the main feature of ptarmigan population dynamics can form the basis for citizen science efforts in order to fill knowledge gaps for the many regions that lack systematic ptarmigan monitoring programs.
