Hydration counteracts the separation of lanthanides by solvent extraction.

ABSTRACT: The extraction of lanthanides from aqueous nitrate solutions by quaternary ammonium nitrate ionic liquids (e.g., [A336][NO₃]) shows a negative sequence (i.e., light lanthanides are more efficiently extracted than heavy lanthanides), which conflicts with the lanthanide contraction. In this study, we explored the origin of the negative sequence by investigating the extraction of lanthanides from ethylammonium nitrate by [A336][NO₃]. The extraction shows a positive sequence, which is converted to a negative sequence with the addition of water. The transformation from positive to negative sequences reveals that the negative sequence is caused by the hydration of lanthanide ions: hydration of lanthanide ions counteracts the extraction. Therefore, the use of solvents that have weak solvation with lanthanide ions might enhance the separation of the elements by solvent extraction.

Redox stabilization of Am(v) in a biphasic extraction system boosts americium/lanthanides separation efficiency.

Project description:Americium (Am) is a key radioactive element in consideration in nuclear waste treatment. Separation of Am from the fission products, lanthanides, is a prerequisite to minimize the hazardous impact of Am and make utilization of rare Am isotopes, but it represents a great challenge due to the chemical similarity between the two groups of elements. Herein, we realize the separation by first oxidizing Am(iii) to high valent Am(vi) and then converting it to Am(v) in situ in a biphasic extraction system with Bi(v) oxidant incorporated in an organic phase. Am(v) is highly stabilized during the separation process and this leads to record high Ln/Am separation factors (>105) in a single contact over a wide range of acidities.

Yttrium and europium separation by solvent extraction with undiluted thiocyanate ionic liquids.

Project description:An yttrium/europium oxide obtained by the processing of fluorescent lamp waste powder was separated into its individual elements by solvent extraction with two undiluted ionic liquids, trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium thiocyanate, [C101][SCN], and tricaprylmethylammonium thiocyanate, [A336][SCN]. The best extraction performances were observed for [C101][SCN], by using an organic-to-aqueous volume ratio of 1/10 and four counter-current extraction stages. The loaded organic phase was afterwards subjected to scrubbing with a solution of 3 mol L-1 CaCl2 + 0.8 mol L-1 NH4SCN to remove the co-extracted europium. Yttrium was quantitatively stripped from the scrubbed organic phase by deionized water. Yttrium and europium were finally recovered as hydroxides by precipitation with ammonia and then calcined to the corresponding oxides. The conditions thus defined for an efficient yttrium/europium separation from synthetic chloride solutions were afterwards tested on a leachate obtained from the dissolution of a real mixed oxide. The purity of Y2O3 with respect to the rare-earth content was 98.2%; the purity of Eu2O3 with respect to calcium was 98.7%.

Ultrafiltration separation of Am(VI)-polyoxometalate from lanthanides.

Project description:Partitioning of americium from lanthanides (Ln) present in used nuclear fuel plays a key role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy1-3. This task is extremely challenging because thermodynamically stable Am(III) and Ln(III) ions have nearly identical ionic radii and coordination chemistry. Oxidization of Am(III) to Am(VI) produces AmO22+ ions distinct with Ln(III) ions, which has the potential to facilitate separations in principle. However, the rapid reduction of Am(VI) back to Am(III) by radiolysis products and organic reagents required for the traditional separation protocols including solvent and solid extractions hampers practical redox-based separations. Herein, we report a nanoscale polyoxometalate (POM) cluster with a vacancy site compatible with the selective coordination of hexavalent actinides (238U, 237Np, 242Pu and 243Am) over trivalent lanthanides in nitric acid media. To our knowledge, this cluster is the most stable Am(VI) species in aqueous media observed so far. Ultrafiltration-based separation of nanoscale Am(VI)-POM clusters from hydrated lanthanide ions by commercially available, fine-pored membranes enables the development of a once-through americium/lanthanide separation strategy that is highly efficient and rapid, does not involve any organic components and requires minimal energy input.

Antagonistic Role of Aqueous Complexation in the Solvent Extraction and Separation of Rare Earth Ions.

Project description:Solvent extraction is used widely for chemical separations and environmental remediation. Although the kinetics and efficiency of this process rely upon the formation of ion-extractant complexes, it has proven challenging to identify the location of ion-extractant complexation within the solution and its impact on the separation. Here, we use tensiometry and X-ray scattering to characterize the surface of aqueous solutions of lanthanide chlorides and the water-soluble extractant bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP), in the absence of a coexisting organic solvent. These studies restrict ion-extractant interactions to the aqueous phase and its liquid-vapor interface, allowing us to explore the consequences that one or the other is the location of ion-extractant complexation. Unexpectedly, we find that light lanthanides preferentially occupy the liquid-vapor interface. This contradicts our expectation that heavy lanthanides should have a higher interfacial density since they are preferentially extracted by HDEHP in solvent extraction processes. These results reveal the antagonistic role played by ion-extractant complexation within the aqueous phase and clarify the advantages of complexation at the interface. Extractants in common use are often soluble in water, in addition to their organic phase solubility, and similar effects to those described here are expected to be relevant to a variety of separations processes.

Positively charged nanofiltration membrane synthesis, transport models, and lanthanides separation.

Project description:The design and understanding of rejection mechanisms for both positively and negatively charged nanofiltration (NF) membranes are needed for the development of highly selective separation of multivalent ions. In this study, positively charged nanofiltration membranes were created via an addition of commercially available polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) by conventional interfacial polymerization technique. Demonstration of real increase in surface zeta potential, along with other characterization methods, confirmed the addition of weak basic functional groups from PAH. Both positively and negatively charged NF membranes were tested for evaluating their potential as a technology for the recovery or separation of lanthanide cations (neodymium and lanthanum chloride as model salts) from aqueous sources. Particularly, the NF membranes with added PAH performed high and stable lanthanides retentions, with values around 99.3% in mixtures with high ionic strength (100 mM, equivalent to ~6,000 ppm), 99.3% rejection at 85% water recovery (and high Na+/La3+ selectivity, with 0% Na+ rejection starting at 65% recovery), and both constant lanthanum rejection and permeate flux at even pH 2.7. Donnan steric pore model with dielectric exclusion elucidated the transport mechanism of lanthanides and sodium, proving the potential of high selective separation at low permeate fluxes using positively charged NF membranes.

Separation of Lithium from Aluminum-Containing Clay Mineral Leachate Solution Using Energy-Efficient Membrane Solvent Extraction.

Project description:This study investigated a novel membrane solvent extraction (MSX) process for the recovery and separation of lithium (Li) from clay minerals using a cation exchange organic extractant [di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid] (DEHPA). The Li is selectively extracted from clay mineral leachate solution using highly efficient aluminum hydroxide sorbents to form lithium aluminum double hydroxide sulfate (LDH sulfate) as the precipitate. Several delithiation methods have been explored to separate Li from aluminum (Al). LDH sulfate is dissolved in dilute H2SO4 and used as the feed solution, and DEHPA is used to selectively separate Li and Al from the feed solution. The MSX process immobilizes DEHPA in the microporous membrane pores and continuously removes Al from the feed solution to obtain pure Li. The efficiency of DEHPA for the selective separation of Li from Al is determined by measuring its distribution coefficient. This study used the optimum feed solution pH of 3, strip solution concentration of 2 mol/L H2SO4, and an organic phase composition of 30% v/v DEHPA in Isopar-L. The MSX process achieved a Li yield of about 92% and a purity of ⩾ 94%. The results suggest that the innovative MSX technology is a time- and energy-efficient approach for the recovery and separation of high-purity Li for application in Li-ion batteries and other clean energy technologies.

Ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane enables efficient actinides/lanthanides separation.

Project description:Separation of actinides from lanthanides is of great importance for the safe management of nuclear waste and sustainable development of nuclear energy, but it represents a huge challenge due to the chemical complexity of these f-elements. Herein, we report an efficient separation strategy based on ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane. In the presence of a strong oxidizing reagent, the actinides (U, Np, Pu, Am) in a nitric acid solution exist in the high valent and linear dioxo form of actinyl ions while the lanthanides (Ce, Nd, Eu, Gd, etc.) remain as trivalent/tetravalent spheric ions. A task-specific graphene oxide membrane with an interlayer nanochannel spacing between the sizes of hydrated actinyl ions and lanthanides ions is tailored and used as an ionic cut-off filter, which blocks the larger and linear actinyl ions but allows the smaller and spheric lanthanides ions to penetrate through, affording lanthanides/actinides separation factors up to ~400. This work realizes the group separation of actinides from lanthanides under highly acidic conditions by a simple ion sieving strategy and highlights the great potential of utilizing graphene oxide membrane for nuclear waste treatment.

Complexation and Separation of Trivalent Actinides and Lanthanides by a Novel DGA Derived from Macrocyclic Crown Ether: Synthesis, Extraction, and Spectroscopic and Density Functional Theory Studies.

Project description:A DGA-arm-grafted macrocyclic aza-crown ether ligand (Cr6DGA) was synthesized, and its solvent extraction behavior toward trivalent americium and europium in nitric acid medium was studied. The effects of various parameters such as the contact time, temperature, concentration of the extractant, and acidity on the extraction by Cr6DGA were investigated. It was found that in 3 mol/L HNO3, the SFEu/Am value was about 2. The complexation energies calculated by DFT showed that the Eu(III) complexes were more stable than the corresponding Am(III) complexes in gas, aqueous, and organic phases. Furthermore, the coordination study showed that the metal/ligand ratio of the extracted species was 1:2 by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. The time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectra (TRLFS) further proved that the extracted species contained one water molecule, and so the composition of the extracted complexes may be [EuL2NO3(H2O)]2+ or [EuL2(NO3)2(H2O)]+. Finally, DFT calculations revealed that [EuL2(NO3)2(H2O)]+ is a more stable species and the binding energy of Eu(III) with the DGA unit is lower than that with the crown unit.

The Earlier the Better: Structural Analysis and Separation of Lanthanides with Pyrroloquinoline Quinone.

Project description:Lanthanides (Ln) are critical raw materials, however, their mining and purification have a considerable negative environmental impact and sustainable recycling and separation strategies for these elements are needed. In this study, the precipitation and solubility behavior of Ln complexes with pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), the cofactor of recently discovered lanthanide (Ln) dependent methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) enzymes, is presented. In this context, the molecular structure of a biorelevant europium PQQ complex was for the first time elucidated outside a protein environment. The complex crystallizes as an inversion symmetric dimer, Eu2 PQQ2 , with binding of Eu in the biologically relevant pocket of PQQ. LnPQQ and Ln1Ln2PQQ complexes were characterized by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, 151 Eu-Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray total scattering, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). It is shown that a natural enzymatic cofactor is capable to achieve separation by precipitation of the notoriously similar, and thus difficult to separate, lanthanides to some extent.

Separation and Recovery of Scandium from Sulfate Media by Solvent Extraction and Polymer Inclusion Membranes with Amic Acid Extractants.

Project description:We report on the separation and recovery of scandium(III) from sulfate solutions using solvent extraction and a membrane transport system utilizing newly synthesized amic acid extractants. Scandium(III) was quantitatively extracted with 50 mmol dm-3 N-[N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)aminocarbonylmethyl]glycine (D2EHAG) or N-[N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)aminocarbonylmethyl]phenylalanine (D2EHAF) in n-dodecane at pH 2 and easily stripped using a 0.5 mol dm-3 sulfuric acid solution. The extraction mechanisms of scandium(III) extraction with D2EHAG and D2EHAF were examined, and it was established that scandium(III) formed a 1:3 complex with both extractants (HR), that is, Sc(SO4)2 - aq + 1.5(HR)2org ⇄ Sc(SO4)R(HR)2org + H+ aq + SO4 2- aq. The equilibrium constants of extraction were evaluated to be 4.87 and 9.99 (mol dm-3)0.5 for D2EHAG and D2EHAF, respectively. D2EHAG and D2EHAF preferentially extracted scandium(III) with a high selectivity compared to common transition metal ions under high acidic conditions (0 < pH ≤ 3). In addition, scandium(III) was quantitatively transported from a feed solution into a 0.5 mol dm-3 sulfuric acid receiving solution through a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) containing D2EHAF as a carrier. Scandium(III) was completely separated thermodynamically from nickel(II), aluminum(III), cobalt(II), manganese(II), chromium(III), calcium(II), and magnesium(II), and partially separated from iron(III) kinetically using a PIM containing D2EHAF as a carrier. The initial flux value for scandium(III) (J 0,Sc = 1.9 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1) was two times higher than that of iron(III) (J 0,Fe = 9.3 × 10-8 mol m-2 s-1).
