Streamflow Prediction in Highly Regulated, Transboundary Watersheds Using Multi-Basin Modeling and Remote Sensing Imagery.

ABSTRACT: Despite the potential of remote sensing for monitoring reservoir operation, few studies have investigated the extent to which reservoir releases can be inferred across different spatial and temporal scales. Through evaluating 21 reservoirs in the highly regulated Greater Mekong region, remote sensing imagery was found to be useful in estimating daily storage volumes for within-year and over-year reservoirs (correlation coefficients [CC] ≥ 0.9, normalized root mean squared error [NRMSE] ≤ 31%), but not for run-of-river reservoirs (CC < 0.4, 40% ≤ NRMSE ≤ 270%). Given a large gap in the number of reservoirs between global and local databases, the proposed framework can improve representation of existing reservoirs in the global reservoir database and thus human impacts in hydrological models. Adopting an Integrated Reservoir Operation Scheme within a multi-basin model was found to overcome the limitations of remote sensing and improve streamflow prediction at ungauged cascade reservoir systems where previous modeling approaches were unsuccessful. As a result, daily regulated streamflow was predicted competently across all types of reservoirs (median values of CC = 0.65, NRMSE = 8%, and Kling-Gupta efficiency [KGE] = 0.55) and downstream hydrological stations (median values of CC = 0.94, NRMSE = 8%, and KGE = 0.81). The findings are valuable for helping to understand the impacts of reservoirs and dams on streamflow and for developing more useful adaptation measures to extreme events in data sparse river basins.

Project description:In this work, we have used the Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to examine streamflow variability of the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMRB) associated with changes in the Upper Mekong River Basin (UMRB) inflows. Two hypothetical experiments were formulated and evaluated for the LMRB, where we conducted runoff simulations with multiple inflow changes that include upstream runoff yield increase and decrease scenarios. Streamflow variability of the LMRB was quantified by two streamflow metrics that explain flow variability and predictability, and high flow disturbance. The model experiments were performed for the Lower Mekong River Basin with identical climate, soil, and other watershed characteristics data. Remote sensing precipitation (Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission, TRMM, and Global Precipitation Measurement mission, GPM), meteorological data as well as spatial data that include a digital elevation model, newly developed soil information (Harmonized World Soil Database, HWSD), and land use and land cover were processed as input to the LMRB model simulations. Observed daily streamflow data along the Lower Mekong River from Chiang Sean, Thailand to Kratie, Cambodia were used for calibration and validation. Our work results suggest that the Lower Mekong River streamflow is highly variable and has a low predictability (Colwell index of about 32%). We found that releasing more water from upstream Mekong during rainfall months by 30% would result in a reduction in the Lower Mekong streamflow predictability by about 21%. This reduction in predictability is mainly attributed to a decrease in the Contingency index. Our work shows that the ability to predict floods/droughts at the Lower Mekong River would be reduced if there is any anticipated change (i.e., increase/decrease) from UMRB releases. Our results also show that releasing more flows from the upstream Mekong would also affect flood duration and the frequency of flood occurrences downstream. The results of this work thus help to quantify the sensitivity of streamflow variability at the Lower Mekong River Basin to upstream anthropogenic changes.

Project description:GIS and remote sensing techniques were effectively used to analyse the morphometric parameters including linear, geometric, basin texture (aerial) and relief aspects of the Halda River Basin, Bangladesh. Along with measuring the morphometric parameters using predetermined formulas, advanced geo-computing tools of spatial analysis, cartography, math, geoprocessing and geometric analysis were employed to carry out the spatial distribution of selected parameters, especially aerial parameters. The linear aspect indicates the basin is six-order and oval-shaped. The bifurcation ratio (4.03) and relevant parameters indicate the moderate effect of geology and structural control is evident. The mean stream length (1.27) and Rho value (ranges between 0.11 and 0.20) indicate high runoff in steep areas and hydrologic storage capacity in flat areas. The stream frequency (0.83), drainage density (1.22), drainage intensity (0.68), infiltration ratio (1.02), length of the overland flow (0.41), and constant of channel maintenance (0.82) indicate the presence of moderate hard rock, less structural disturbances and moderate to high surface runoff in the basin. Basin relief (489 m), relative relief (2.02), ruggedness number (400), Melton's ruggedness number (12.43), and mean slope (9.33%) indicate the potential of high erosion and material transfer. The spatial distribution of selected aerial aspects significantly correlated to elevation and slope. The hierarchical pattern and spatial distribution of the morphometric parameters indicate areas with high slopes and lower-order streams have a high potential to be affected by soil erosion, landslides and flash floods, elsewhere, the areas with low slopes are prone to short-duration riverine floods. The research findings will help policymakers for integrated river basin management, agricultural development, and water management. In addition, researchers of morphohydrological, geological and climatological research will be beneficiary.
