Morphology control in crystalline nanoparticle-polymer aggregates.

ABSTRACT: Self-assembly of nanoparticles can be mediated by polymers, but has so far led almost exclusively to nanoparticle aggregates that are amorphous. Here, we employed Coulombic interactions to generate a range of composite materials from mixtures of charged nanoparticles and oppositely charged polymers. The assembly behavior of these nanoparticle/polymer composites depends on their order of addition: polymers added to nanoparticles give rise to stable aggregates, but nanoparticles added to polymers disassemble the initially formed aggregates. The amorphous aggregates were transformed into crystalline ones by transiently increasing the ionic strength of the solution. The morphology of the resulting crystals depended on the length of the polymer: short polymer chains mediated the self-assembly of nanoparticles into strongly faceted crystals, whereas long chains led to pseudospherical nanoparticle/polymer assemblies, within which the crystalline order of nanoparticles was retained.

Block co-polyMOFs: morphology control of polymer-MOF hybrid materials.

Project description:The hybridization of block copolymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to create novel materials (block co-polyMOFs, BCPMOFs) with controlled morphologies is reported. In this study, block copolymers containing poly(1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, H2bdc) and morphology directing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) or poly(cyclooctadiene) (poly(COD)) blocks were synthesized for the preparation of BCPMOFs. Block copolymer architecture and weight fractions were found to have a significant impact on the resulting morphology, mediated through the assembly of polymer precursors prior to MOF formation, as determined through dynamic light scattering. Simple modification of block copolymer weight fraction allowed for tuning of particle size and morphology with either faceted and spherical features. Modification of polymer block architecture represents a simple and powerful method to direct morphology in highly crystalline polyMOF materials. Furthermore, the BCPMOFs could be prepared from both Zr4+ and Zn2+ MOFs, yielding hybrid materials with appreciable surface areas and tuneable porosities. The resulting Zn2+ BCPMOF yielded materials with very narrow size distributions and uniform cubic morphologies. The use of topology in BCPMOFs to direct morphology in block copolymer assemblies may open new methodologies to access complex materials far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Morphology Control of Liposome - RAFT Oligomer Precursors to Complex Polymer Nanostructures.

Project description:Different types of butyl acrylate (BA)-co-acrylic acid (AA) oligomers were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and mixed with extruded 200 nm dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide vesicles. The resulting precursor structures form the basis for subsequent vesicle-templated polymerizations. Systematic variations in temperature, pH, oligomer length, and oligomer composition and their effects on precursor morphology were studied. Surprisingly, different morphologies were obtained, including capsules, protruded capsules, solid spheres, and multicompartment structures. For example, capsules and multicompartment structures were found to result from higher AA contents, and protruded capsules and solid particles resulted from lower AA contents. Subsequent chain extension of the RAFT oligomers resulted in polymer nanostructures resembling the precursor morphologies.

Plasmonic Coupling in Silver Nanoparticle Aggregates and Their Polymer Composite Films for Near<i>-</i>Infrared Photothermal Biofilm Eradication.

Project description:Plasmonic nanoparticles with near-IR (NIR) light absorption are highly attractive in biomedicine for minimally invasive photothermal treatments. However, these optical properties are typically exhibited by plasmonic nanostructures with complex, nonspherical geometries that may prohibit their broad commercialization and further integration into photothermal devices. Herein, we present the single-step aerosol self-assembly of plasmonic nanoaggregates that consisted of spherical silver nanoparticles with tunable extinction from visible to NIR wavelengths. This tunable extinction was achieved by the addition of SiO2 during the flame synthesis of the nanoparticles, which acted as a dielectric spacer between the spherical silver nanoparticles and was also computationally validated by simulating the extinction spectra of similar silver nanoaggregates. These plasmonic nanoaggregates were easily deposited on silicone polymeric surfaces and further encased with a top polymer layer, forming plasmonic photothermal nanocomposite films. The photothermal properties of the NIR nanocomposite films were utilized to eradicate the established biofilms of clinically relevant Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with a relationship observed between the final surface temperature and biofilm eradication.

Morphology Mapping of Nanoparticle-Filled Immiscible Polymer Blends in Flow: The Existence of a Critical Ratio between Nanoparticle Concentration and Droplet Concentration.

Project description:The delicate flow-induced morphology of immiscible polypropylene/polystyrene blends in the presence of silica nanoparticles (NPs) is investigated in a multiparameter space. The morphology map constructed based on in situ morphology observation reveals that a critical ratio of NP concentration to droplet concentration, which strongly depends on the NP surface chemistries and the ratio of the NP concentration to the droplet concentration, exists. Below or above the critical ratio, the NPs display diverse effects on the morphology (promote or suppress droplet coalescence). These results can be interpreted by the competition between the bridging mechanism (acceleratory effect) and the enhanced viscoelasticity (inhibitory effect) exerted by the NPs.

Analog programing of conducting-polymer dendritic interconnections and control of their morphology.

Project description:Although materials and processes are different from biological cells', brain mimicries led to tremendous achievements in parallel information processing via neuromorphic engineering. Inexistent in electronics, we emulate dendritic morphogenesis by electropolymerization in water, aiming in operando material modification for hardware learning. Systematic study of applied voltage-pulse parameters details on tuning independently morphological aspects of micrometric dendrites': fractal number, branching degree, asymmetry, density or length. Growths time-lapse image processing shows spatial features to be dynamically dependent, and expand distinctively before and after conductive bridging with two electro-generated dendrites. Circuit-element analysis and impedance spectroscopy confirms their morphological control in temporal windows where growth kinetics is finely perturbed by the input frequency and duty cycle. By the emulation of one's most preponderant mechanisms for brain's long-term memory, its implementation in vicinity of sensing arrays, neural probes or biochips shall greatly optimize computational costs and recognition required to classify high-dimensional patterns from complex environments.

A Crystalline 1D Dynamic Covalent Polymer.

Project description:The synthesis of crystalline one-dimensional polymers provides a fundamental understanding about the structure-property relationship in polymeric materials and allows the preparation of materials with enhanced thermal, mechanical, and conducting properties. However, the synthesis of crystalline one-dimensional polymers remains a challenge because polymers tend to adopt amorphous or semicrystalline phases. Herein, we report the synthesis of a crystalline one-dimensional polymer in solution by dynamic covalent chemistry. The structure of the polymer has been unambiguously confirmed by microcrystal electron diffraction that together with charge transport studies and theoretical calculations show how the π-stacked chains of the polymer generate optimal channels for charge transport.

Control of Polymer Brush Morphology, Rheology, and Protein Repulsion by Hydrogen Bond Complexation.

Project description:Polymer brushes are widely used to alter the properties of interfaces. In particular, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and similar polymers can make surfaces inert toward biomolecular adsorption. Neutral hydrophilic brushes are normally considered to have static properties at a given temperature. As an example, PEG is not responsive to pH or ionic strength. Here we show that, by simply introducing a polymeric acid such as poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), the highly hydrated brush barrier can change its properties entirely. This is caused by multivalent hydrogen bonds in an extremely pH-sensitive process. Remarkably, it is sufficient to reduce the pH to 5 for complexation to occur at the interface, which is two units higher than in the corresponding bulk systems. Below this critical pH, PMAA starts to bind to PEG in large amounts (comparable to the PEG amount), causing the brush to gradually compact and dehydrate. The brush also undergoes major rheology changes, from viscoelastic to rigid. Furthermore, the protein repelling ability of PEG is lost after reaching a threshold in the amount of PMAA bound. The changes in brush properties are tunable and become more pronounced when more PMAA is bound. The initial brush state is fully recovered when releasing PMAA by returning to physiological pH. Our findings are relevant for many applications involving functional interfaces, such as capture-release of biomolecules.

Aggregation and morphology control enables multiple cases of high-efficiency polymer solar cells.

Project description:Although the field of polymer solar cell has seen much progress in device performance in the past few years, several limitations are holding back its further development. For instance, current high-efficiency (>9.0%) cells are restricted to material combinations that are based on limited donor polymers and only one specific fullerene acceptor. Here we report the achievement of high-performance (efficiencies up to 10.8%, fill factors up to 77%) thick-film polymer solar cells for multiple polymer:fullerene combinations via the formation of a near-ideal polymer:fullerene morphology that contains highly crystalline yet reasonably small polymer domains. This morphology is controlled by the temperature-dependent aggregation behaviour of the donor polymers and is insensitive to the choice of fullerenes. The uncovered aggregation and design rules yield three high-efficiency (>10%) donor polymers and will allow further synthetic advances and matching of both the polymer and fullerene materials, potentially leading to significantly improved performance and increased design flexibility.

Photocleavable Anionic Glues for Light-Responsive Nanoparticle Aggregates.

Project description:Integrating light-sensitive molecules within nanoparticle (NP) assemblies is an attractive approach to fabricate new photoresponsive nanomaterials. Here, we describe the concept of photocleavable anionic glue (PAG): small trianions capable of mediating interactions between (and inducing the aggregation of) cationic NPs by means of electrostatic interactions. Exposure to light converts PAGs into dianionic products incapable of maintaining the NPs in an assembled state, resulting in light-triggered disassembly of NP aggregates. To demonstrate the proof-of-concept, we work with an organic PAG incorporating the UV-cleavable o-nitrobenzyl moiety and an inorganic PAG, the photosensitive trioxalatocobaltate(III) complex, which absorbs light across the entire visible spectrum. Both PAGs were used to prepare either amorphous NP assemblies or regular superlattices with a long-range NP order. These NP aggregates disassembled rapidly upon light exposure for a specific time, which could be tuned by the incident light wavelength or the amount of PAG used. Selective excitation of the inorganic PAG in a system combining the two PAGs results in a photodecomposition product that deactivates the organic PAG, enabling nontrivial disassembly profiles under a single type of external stimulus.
