Polycationic Redox-Active Cyclophanes with Integrated Electron-Rich Diboron Units.

ABSTRACT: Cationic cyclophanes are widely used in a variety of applications in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. In this work the authors systematically study the integration of electron-rich diboron units with B^II atoms into polycationic cyclophanes with viologen-like electron-acceptor units. They also report a first hexacationic cage-compound in which three diboron units connect two tris(4-pyridyl)triazine acceptor units. Moreover, di- and tetracationic open-structure compounds, in which one diboron unit connects two bispyridyl groups, were synthesized and the properties compared to those of the corresponding closed structures (cyclophanes). The combination of diboron electron-donor units and bi- or oligopyridyl electron-acceptor units leads to intriguing optical and redox properties.

Project description:The reductive coupling of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) stabilized (dibromo)vinylborane yields a 1,2-divinyldiborene, which, although isoelectronic to a 1,3,5-triene, displays no extended π conjugation because of twisting of the C2 B2 C2 chain. While this divinyldiborene coordinates to copper(I) and platinum(0) in an η2 -B2 and η4 -C2 B2 fashion, respectively, it undergoes a complex rearrangement to an η4 -1,3-diborete upon complexation with nickel(0).

Super electron donors derived from diboron.

Project description:Single-electron transfer is an important process in organic chemistry, in which a single-electron reductant (electron donor) acts as a key component. Compared with metal-based electron donors, organic electron donors have some unique advantages, such as tunable reduction ability and mild reaction conditions. The development of novel organic electron donors with good reduction ability together with ease of preparation is in high demand. Based on the pyridine-catalyzed radical borylation reaction developed in our laboratory, we have discovered that, the reaction system consisting of a diboron(4) compound, methoxide and a pyridine derivative could smoothly produce super electron donors in situ. Two boryl-pyridine based species, the major one being a trans-2H,2'H-[2,2'-bipyridine]-1,1'-diide borate complex and the minor one being a pyridine radical anion-borate complex, were observed and carefully characterized. These complexes were found to be organic super electron donors unprecedented in literature, and their formation mechanisms were studied by DFT calculations. The diboron/methoxide/pyridine system enables the preparation of organic super electron donors from easily accessible starting materials under mild conditions, which has the potential to be a general and practical single-electron reducing agent in organic synthesis.

Homochiral BINOL-based macrocycles with π-electron-rich, electron-withdrawing or extended spacing units as receptors for C60.

Project description:The "one-pot" synthesis of several homochiral macrocycles has been achieved by using π-electron-rich, electron-deficient or extended aromatic dicarboxylic acids in combination with an axially-chiral dibenzylic alcohol, derived from enantiomerically-pure BINOL. Two series of cyclic adducts with average molecular D 2 and D 3 molecular symmetries, respectively, have been isolated in pure forms. Their yields and selectivities deviate substantially from statistical distributions. NMR and CD spectroscopic methods are efficient and functional in order to highlight the variability of shapes of the covalent macrocyclic frameworks. The larger D 3 cyclic adducts exhibit recognition properties towards C60 in toluene solutions (up to log K a = 3.2) with variable stoichiometries and variable intensities of the charge-tranfer band upon complexation.

Integrated redox-active reagents for photoinduced regio- and stereoselective fluorocarboborylation.

Project description:Vinylboronates and alkylboronates are key components in variegated transformations in all facets of chemical science. The synthesis of vinylboronates and alkylboronates suffers from step-tedious and poor stereoselective procedures. We have developed a regulated radical difunctionalization strategy for the construction of fluorine-containing vinylboronates and alkylboronates with an integrated redox-active reagent IMDN-SO2RF. This bench-stable imidazolium sulfonate cationic salt offers a scalable and operational protocol for the fluoroalkylation-borylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons in a high regio- and stereoselective manner. The products can be further transformed into valuable fluorinated building blocks.

Surface Electron-Hole Rich Species Active in the Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation.

Project description:Iridium and ruthenium and their oxides/hydroxides are the best candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction under harsh acidic conditions owing to the low overpotentials observed for Ru- and Ir-based anodes and the high corrosion resistance of Ir-oxides. Herein, by means of cutting edge operando surface and bulk sensitive X-ray spectroscopy techniques, specifically designed electrode nanofabrication and ab initio DFT calculations, we were able to reveal the electronic structure of the active IrOx centers (i.e., oxidation state) during electrocatalytic oxidation of water in the surface and bulk of high-performance Ir-based catalysts. We found the oxygen evolution reaction is controlled by the formation of empty Ir 5d states in the surface ascribed to the formation of formally IrV species leading to the appearance of electron-deficient oxygen species bound to single iridium atoms (μ1-O and μ1-OH) that are responsible for water activation and oxidation. Oxygen bound to three iridium centers (μ3-O) remains the dominant species in the bulk but do not participate directly in the electrocatalytic reaction, suggesting bulk oxidation is limited. In addition a high coverage of a μ1-OO (peroxo) species during the OER is excluded. Moreover, we provide the first photoelectron spectroscopic evidence in bulk electrolyte that the higher surface-to-bulk ratio in thinner electrodes enhances the material usage involving the precipitation of a significant part of the electrode surface and near-surface active species.

Tailoring superstructure units for improved oxygen redox activity in Li-rich layered oxide battery's positive electrodes.

Project description:The high-voltage oxygen redox activity of Li-rich layered oxides enables additional capacity beyond conventional transition metal (TM) redox contributions and drives the development of positive electrode active materials in secondary Li-based batteries. However, Li-rich layered oxides often face voltage decay during battery operation. In particular, although Li-rich positive electrode active materials with a high nickel content demonstrate improved voltage stability, they suffer from poor discharge capacity. Here, via physicochemical and electrochemical measurements, we investigate the correlation between oxygen redox activity and superstructure units in Li-rich layered oxides, specifically the fractions of LiMn6 and Ni4+-stabilized LiNiMn5 within the TM layer. We prove that an excess of LiNiMn5 hinders the extraction/insertion of lithium ions during Li metal coin cell charging/discharging, resulting in incomplete oxygen redox activity at a cell potential of about 3.3 V. We also demonstrate that lithium content adjustment could be a beneficial approach to tailor the superstructure units. Indeed, we report an improved oxygen redox reversibility for an optimized Li-rich layered oxide with fewer LiNiMn5 units.

1,2,5,6-Tetrakis(guanidino)-Naphthalenes: Electron Donors, Fluorescent Probes and Redox-Active Ligands.

Project description:New redox-active 1,2,5,6-tetrakis(guanidino)-naphthalene compounds, isolable and storable in the neutral and deep-green dicationic redox states and oxidisable further in two one-electron steps to the tetracations, are reported. Protonation switches on blue fluorescence, with the fluorescence intensity (quantum yield) increasing with the degree of protonation. Reactions with N-halogenosuccinimides or N-halogenophthalimides led to a series of new redox-active halogeno- and succinimido-/phthalimido-substituted derivatives. These highly selective reactions are proposed to proceed via the tri- or tetracationic state as the intermediate. The derivatives are oxidised reversibly at slightly higher potentials than that of the unsubstituted compounds to dications and further to tri- and tetracations. The integration of redox-active ligands in the transition-metal complexes shifts the redox potentials to higher values and also allows reversible oxidation in two potentially separated one-electron steps.

Tuning Redox Active Polyoxometalates for Efficient Electron-Coupled Proton-Buffer-Mediated Water Splitting.

Project description:We present strategies to tune the redox properties of polyoxometalate clusters to enhance the electron-coupled proton-buffer-mediated water splitting process, in which the evolution of hydrogen and oxygen can occur in different forms and is separated in time and space. By substituting the heteroatom template in the Keggin-type polyoxometalate cluster, H6 ZnW12 O40 , it is possible to double the number of electrons and protonation in the redox reactions (from two to four). This increase can be achieved with better matching of the energy levels as indicated by the redox potentials, compared to the ones of well-studied H3 PW12 O40 and H4 SiW12 O40 . This means that H6 ZnW12 O40 can act as a high-performance redox mediator in an electrolytic cell for the on-demand generation of hydrogen with a high decoupling efficiency of 95.5 % and an electrochemical energy efficiency of 83.3 %. Furthermore, the H6 ZnW12 O40 cluster also exhibits an excellent cycling behaviour and redox reversibility with almost 100 % H2 -mediated capacity retention during 200 cycles and a high coulombic efficiency >92 % each cycle at 30 mA cm-2 .

Redox-Active Guanidines in Proton-Coupled Electron-Transfer Reactions: Real Alternatives to Benzoquinones?

Project description:Guanidino-functionalized aromatics (GFAs) are readily available, stable organic redox-active compounds. In this work we apply one particular GFA compound, 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(tetramethylguanidino)benzene, in its oxidized form in a variety of oxidation/oxidative coupling reactions to demonstrate the scope of its proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactivity. Addition of an excess of acid boosts its oxidation power, enabling the oxidative coupling of substrates with redox potentials of at least +0.77 V vs. Fc+ /Fc. The green recyclability by catalytic re-oxidation with dioxygen is also shown. Finally, a direct comparison indicates that GFAs are real alternatives to toxic halo- or cyano-substituted benzoquinones.

Redox-active cysteines of a membrane electron transporter DsbD show dual compartment accessibility.

Project description:The membrane-embedded domain of the unusual electron transporter DsbD (DsbDbeta) uses two redox-active cysteines to catalyze electron transfer between thioredoxin-fold polypeptides on opposite sides of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. How the electrons are transferred across the membrane is unknown. Here, we show that DsbDbeta displays an inherent functional and structural symmetry: first, the two cysteines of DsbDbeta can be alkylated from both the cytoplasm and the periplasm. Second, when the two cysteines are disulfide-bonded, cysteine scanning shows that the C-terminal halves of the cysteine-containing transmembrane segments 1 and 4 are exposed to the aqueous environment while the N-terminal halves are not. Third, proline residues located pseudo-symmetrically around the two cysteines are required for redox activity and accessibility of the cysteines. Fourth, mixed disulfide complexes, apparent intermediates in the electron transfer process, are detected between DsbDbeta and thioredoxin molecules on each side of the membrane. We propose a model where the two redox-active cysteines are located at the center of the membrane, accessible on both sides of the membrane to the thioredoxin proteins.
