Stress at work: Self-monitoring of stressors and resources to support employees.

ABSTRACT: High levels of stress at work may have serious consequences for employee functioning and mental health. By providing employees with an easily accessible instrument to regularly evaluate stressors and resources, employee self-monitoring and guidance to support can be accommodated. We evaluated an online self-monitoring tool Brief Assessment of Stress and Energy (BASE). Through their organization, 139 railway emergency services employees were invited to complete BASE and six wellbeing measures. We assessed BASE in two ways: using multiple regression analysis (N = 102, 73.4%), as well as by telephone follow-up interviews during which experts and respondents evaluated the BASE outcome (N = 67, 65.7%). Explained variances of BASE on the six wellbeing measures ranged between 26.6% and 49.9%. Telephone interviews confirmed the BASE outcome. The results indicate that BASE is associated with several measures of wellbeing and accurately refers respondents to counseling. This study shows that BASE is a promising instrument to encourage employees to self-monitor stressors and resources and identify those who need counseling.

Project description:BackgroundDigital technologies are increasingly being integrated into healthcare settings, including emergency departments, with the potential to improve efficiency and patient care. Although digitalisation promises many benefits, the use of digital technologies can also introduce new stressors and challenges among medical staff, which may result in the development of various negative work and health outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to identify existing digital stressors and resources among emergency physicians, examine associations with various work- and health-related parameters, and finally identify the potential need for preventive measures.MethodsIn this quantitative cross-sectional study, an online questionnaire was used to examine the relationship between digital stressors (technostress creators), digital resources (technostress inhibitors), technostress perception as well as mental health, job satisfaction and work engagement among 204 physicians working in German emergency medicine departments. Data collection lasted from December 2022 to April 2023. Validated scales were used for the questionnaire (e.g. "Technostress"-scale and the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ). Descriptive and multiple regression analyses were run to test explorative assumptions.ResultsThe study found medium levels of technostress perception among the participating emergency physicians as well as low levels of persisting technostress inhibitors. The queried physicians on average reported medium levels of exhaustion symptoms, high levels of work engagement and job satisfaction. Significant associations between digital stressors and work- as well as health-related outcomes were analyzed.ConclusionThis study provides a preliminary assessment of the persistence of digital stressors, digital resources and technostress levels, and their potential impact on relevant health and work-related outcomes, among physicians working in German emergency departments. Understanding and mitigating these stressors is essential to promote the well-being of physicians and ensure optimal patient care. As digitisation processes will continue to increase, the need for preventive support measures in dealing with technology stressors is obvious and should be expanded accordingly in the clinics. By integrating such support into everyday hospital life, medical staff in emergency departments can better focus on patient care and mitigate potential stress factors associated with digital technologies.

Project description:BackgroundHigh levels of perceived stress have a negative bearing on health and well-being, and stress is a major public health issue. According to the Stress Process Model, stressors are socially patterned and combine to produce strain. Despite this, most studies on stress have focused on work-related stressors leaving non-work determinants under-investigated. The aim of the present study was to determine the relative importance of work-related and non-work-related stressors and perceived social support for the overall perceived stress level.MethodsSelf-reported data were drawn from the 2017 population-based health survey "How are you?" conducted in the Central Denmark Region (N = 32,417). Data were linked with data drawn from national administrative registers. Work- and non-work-related stressors assessed included major life events, chronic stressors and daily hassles. Perceived social support was assessed using a single question. Overall perceived stress was assessed by the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale. We conducted dominance analyses based on a multiple linear regression model to determine the most important explanatory variables of overall perceived stress. Analyses were weighted and adjusted.ResultsWork- and non-work-related stressors along with perceived social support explained 42.5% of the total variance (R2) in overall perceived stress. The most important explanatory variables were disease, perceived social support and work situation. The stratified analyses produced slightly varying results ("dominance profiles") of perceived stress between subgroups. Work situation was the most important explanatory variable in the employed group. However, adding non-work-related explanatory variables to the analysis tripled the explained variance.ConclusionsThe overall level of perceived stress can be statistically explained by a combination of work- and non-work-related stressors and perceived social support both at population level and in subgroups. The most important explanatory variables of overall perceived stress are disease, perceived social support and work situation. Results indicate that public health strategies aiming to reduce stress should take a comprehensive approach and address a variety of stressor domains rather than focus on a single domain.Trial registrationThe study was approved by the Danish Data Protection Agency (r. no. 2012-58-0006) and registered in the Central Denmark Region (r. no. 1-16-02-593-16).

Project description:BackgroundBangladesh is one of the world's largest garment exporters. Physical working conditions of garment workers are precarious and known to largely affect their health. Research on garment workers' psychosocial working conditions, however, is scarce. We aimed to quantify psychosocial working conditions of garment workers and possible associations with workers' health.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1,118 ready-made garment (RMG) workers in labor colonies in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in February 2021. Descriptive analyses were performed to characterize social stressors (e.g., being bullied at work, poor leadership) and social resources at work (e.g., receiving support at work, vertical trust between management and employees, beneficial leadership) and workers' health (self-reported overall health and 10 specific health complaints). To examine links of social stressors and social resources with self-reported health outcomes we ran multivariable Poisson regression models yielding prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).ResultsWe found low to moderate levels of workplace bullying and high levels of poor leadership (i.e., supervisors not caring about workers' problems). We also found high levels of social support, vertical trust and beneficial leadership (i.e., supervisors taking decisions free of bias). Garment workers frequently suffered from health complaints, first and foremost headache (68.3%), cold (55.3%), and back pain (50.7%). Health outcomes were poorer among workers who reported to be bullied at work versus not bullied (e.g., PR 1.55 [95% CI 1.32-1.92] for poor self-reported health when bullied by colleagues) and health was better among those reporting to feel supported versus unsupported (e.g., PR 0.61 [0.52-0.71] for poor self-reported health when supported by supervisor). Perceived vertical trust between workers and management was weakly associated with better health. Leadership behavior did not display a consistent pattern.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that working conditions of RMG workers are rather good (e.g., characterized by low levels of bullying and high levels of support, vertical trust and beneficial leadership). The majority of workers reported good or very good health, although health complaints were frequently mentioned, first and foremost headache, cold, and back pain. Associations between psychosocial working conditions and health indicate worse working conditions being associated with poorer health.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Policy makers in aging societies aim for the extension of work lives by increasing the official retirement age. Despite these efforts, many people stop working before reaching this retirement age. The main reason for early retirement is poor health. Health in turn is influenced by exposure to the work environment. Furthermore, health and work stress are influenced by education, which may lead to different effects for the lowly and the highly educated. OBJECTIVE:This study examines the relationship between work stress and retirement age. It investigates whether this relationship is mediated by health and moderated by education. Three dimensions of health are taken into account: self-rated health (SRH), depressive symptoms, and high cardiovascular risk diseases (HCVR). METHODS:A German subsample of the longitudinal Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) was linked with register data of the German Public Pension Scheme (SHARE-RV). The sample followed 302 individuals aged 50 to 65 years at baseline from 2004 to 2014. The data contains information on work stress, measured by job control and effort-reward-imbalance (ERI), health, and age of retirement. Multi-group structural equation modeling was applied to analyze the direct and indirect effects of work stress on retirement age via health. Work stress was lagged so that it temporally preceded health and retirement age. RESULTS:Lower job control and poorer SRH lead to a lower retirement age. Health does not operate as a mediator in the relationship between work stress and retirement age. Education moderates the relationship between work stress and health: high ERI leads to better SRH and better physical health of higher educated persons. Low job control increases the risk of depressive symptoms for persons with less education. CONCLUSIONS:Improving stressful working conditions, particularly improving job control, can prolong the working lives of employees and postpone retirement.
