Consecutive and Selective Double Methylene Insertion of Lithium Carbenoids to Isothiocyanates: A Direct Assembly of Four-Membered Sulfur-Containing Cycles.

ABSTRACT: A formal CH₂ -CH₂ homologation conducted with C1 carbenoids on a carbon electrophile for the obtainment of a four-membered cycle is reported. The logic proposes the consecutive delivery of two single nucleophilic CH₂ units to an isothiocyanate-as competent electrophilic partner-resulting in the assembling of a rare imino-thietane cluster. The single synthetic operation procedure documents genuine chemocontrol, as indicated by the tolerance to various reactive elements decorating the starting materials. Significantly, the double homologation protocol is accomplished directly on a carbon electrophile, thus not requiring the installation of heteroatom-centered manifolds (e.g. boron).

Cytochrome P450-Catalyzed Insertion of Carbenoids into N-H Bonds.

Project description:Expanding nature's catalytic repertoire to include reactions important in synthetic chemistry will open new opportunities for 'green' chemistry and biosynthesis. We demonstrate enzyme-catalyzed insertion of carbenoids into N-H bonds. This type of bond disconnection, which has no counterpart in nature, can be mediated by variants of the cytochrome P450 from Bacillus megaterium. The N-H insertion reaction takes place in water, provides the desired products in 26-83% yield, forms the single addition product exclusively, and does not require slow addition of the diazo component.

Simple Synthesis of Red Iridium(III) Complexes with Sulfur-Contained Four-Membered Ancillary Ligands for OLEDs.

Project description:Phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes have been widely researched for the fabrication of efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, three red Ir(III) complexes named Ir-1, Ir-2, and Ir-3, with Ir-S-C-S four-membered framework rings, were synthesized efficiently at room temperature within 5 min using sulfur-containing ancillary ligands with electron-donating groups of 9,10-dihydro-9,9-dimethylacridine, phenoxazine, and phenothiazine, respectively. Due to the same main ligand of 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline, all Ir(III) complexes showed similar photoluminescence emissions at 622, 619, and 622 nm with phosphorescence quantum yields of 35.4%, 50.4%, and 52.8%, respectively. OLEDs employing these complexes as emitters with the structure of ITO (indium tin oxide)/HAT-CN (dipyra-zino[2,3-f,2',3'-h]quinoxaline-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexacarbonitrile, 5 nm)/TAPC (4,4'-cyclohexylidenebis[N,N-bis-(4-methylphenyl)aniline], 40 nm)/TCTA (4,4″,4″-tris(carbazol-9-yl)triphenylamine, 10 nm)/Ir(III) complex (10 wt%): 2,6DCzPPy (2,6-bis-(3-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)pyridine, 10 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri(mpyrid-3-yl-phenyl)benzene, 50 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) achieved good performance. In particular, the device based on complex Ir-3 with the phenothiazine unit showed the best performance with a maximum brightness of 22,480 cd m-2, a maximum current efficiency of 23.71 cd A-1, and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 18.1%. The research results suggest the Ir(III) complexes with a four-membered ring Ir-S-C-S backbone provide ideas for the rapid preparation of Ir(III) complexes for OLEDs.

Enantioselective intramolecular C-H insertion reactions of donor-donor metal carbenoids.

Project description:The first asymmetric insertion reactions of donor-donor carbenoids, i.e., those with no pendant electron-withdrawing groups, are reported. This process enables the synthesis of densely substituted benzodihydrofurans with high levels of enantio- and diastereoselectivity. Preliminary results show similar efficiency in the preparation of indanes. This new method is used in the first enantioselective synthesis of an oligoresveratrol natural product (E-δ-viniferin).

Nickel-Catalyzed Anionic Cross-Coupling Reaction of Lithium Sulfonimidoyl Alkylidene Carbenoids With Organolithiums.

Project description:The mechanistic platform for a novel nickel0 -catalyzed anionic cross-coupling reaction (ACCR) of lithium sulfonimidoyl alkylidene carbenoids (metalloalkenyl sulfoximines) with organometallic reagents is reported herein, affording substituted alkenylmetals and lithium sulfinamides. The Ni0 -catalyzed ACCR of three different types of metalloalkenyl sulfoximines, including acyclic, axially chiral and exocyclic derivatives, with sp2 organolithiums and sp2 and sp3 Grignard reagents has been studied. The ACCR of metalloalkenyl sulfoximines with PhLi in the presence of the Ni0 -catalyst and precatalyst Ni(PPh3 )2 Cl2 afforded alkenyllithiums, under inversion of configuration at the C atom and complete retention at the S atom. In a combination of experimental and DFT studies, we propose a catalytic cycle of the Ni0 -catalyzed ACCR of lithioalkenyl sulfoximines. Computational studies reveal two distinctive pathways of the ACCR, depending on whether a phosphine or 1,5-cyclooctadiene (COD) is the ligand of the Ni atom. They rectify the underlying importance of forming the key Ni0 -vinylidene intermediate through an indispensable electron-rich Ni0 -center coordinated by phosphine ligands. Fundamentally, we present a mechanistic study in controlling the diastereoselectivity of the alkenyllithium formation via the key lithium sulfinamide coordinated Ni0 -vinylidene complex, which consequently avoids an unselective formation of an alkylidene carbene Ni-complex and ultimately racemic alkenyllithium.

Crumpled graphene-encapsulated sulfur for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur batteries are promising technology in electrical vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. However, their market penetration is seriously impeded by great challenges such as the low electrical conduction of sulfur and lithium sulfides, and lithium polysulfides' shuttling effect. This work shows that such challenges can be partly resolved by encapsulating sulfur in crumpled reduced graphene oxide (S@crGO), which was synthesized by a facile and scalable one-step in situ method. The strong interaction between sulfur and the graphene host, micro- and meso-pore structures, and rich surface functional groups contribute to the high performance of the S@crGO cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Early Failure of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries at Practical Conditions: Crosstalk between Sulfur Cathode and Lithium Anode.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of the most promising next-generation energy storage technologies due to their high theoretical energy and low cost. However, Li-S cells with practically high energy still suffer from a very limited cycle life with reasons which remain unclear. Here, through cell study under practical conditions, it is proved that an internal short circuit (ISC) is a root cause of early cell failure and is ascribed to the crosstalk between the S cathode and Li anode. The cathode topography affects S reactions through influencing the local resistance and electrolyte distribution, particularly under lean electrolyte conditions. The inhomogeneous reactions of S cathodes are easily mirrored by the Li anodes, resulting in exaggerated localized Li plating/stripping, Li filament formation, and eventually cell ISC. Manipulating cathode topography is proven effective to extend the cell cycle life under practical conditions. The findings of this work shed new light on the electrode design for extending cycle life of high-energy Li-S cells, which are also applicable for other rechargeable Li or metal batteries.

Unlocking Liquid Sulfur Chemistry for Fast-Charging Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:A recent study of liquid sulfur produced in an electrochemical cell has prompted further investigation into regulating Li-S oxidation chemistry. In this research, we examined the liquid-to-solid sulfur transition dynamics by visually observing the electrochemical generation of sulfur on a graphene-based substrate. We investigated the charging of polysulfides at various current densities and discovered a quantitative correlation between the size and number density of liquid sulfur droplets and the applied current. However, the areal capacities exhibited less sensitivity. This observation offers valuable insights for designing fast-charging sulfur cathodes. By incorporating liquid sulfur into Li-S batteries with a high sulfur loading of 4.2 mg cm-2, the capacity retention can reach ∼100%, even when increasing the rate from 0.1 to 3 C. This study contributes to a better understanding of the kinetics involved in the liquid-solid sulfur growth in Li-S chemistry and presents viable strategies for optimizing fast-charging operations.

Graphene/Sulfur/Carbon Nanocomposite for High Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:Here, we report a two-step synthesis of graphene/sulfur/carbon ternary composite with a multilayer structure. In this composite, ultrathin S layers are uniformly deposited on graphene nanosheets and covered by a thin layer of amorphous carbon derived from β-cyclodextrin on the surface. Such a unique microstructure, not only improves the electrical conductivity of sulfur, but also effectively inhibits the dissolution of polysulfides during charging/discharging processes. As a result, this ternary nanocomposite exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. It can deliver a high initial discharge and charge capacity of 1410 mAh·g-¹ and 1370 mAh·g-¹, respectively, and a capacity retention of 63.8% can be achieved after 100 cycles at 0.1 C (1 C = 1675 mA·g-¹). A relatively high specific capacity of 450 mAh·g-¹ can still be retained after 200 cycles at a high rate of 2 C. The synthesis process introduced here is simple and broadly applicable to the modification of sulfur cathode for better electrochemical performance.

The phase transfer effect of sulfur in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered to be among the most promising energy storage technologies owing to their high theoretical capacity (1675 mA h g-1). At present, however, discharge mechanisms are complicated and remain a controversial issue. In this work, elemental sulfur, used as an electrical insulator for the cathode, was introduced into batteries for its potential chemical reactions in the electrolyte. A film, prepared by loading elemental sulfur onto glass fiber, was introduced as an interlayer in a Li-S battery. The results demonstrate that elemental sulfur may be reduced to polysulfides even when it functions as an electrical insulator for the cathode. Furthermore, it can improve the overall capacity of the Li-S battery and cycle life. This was verified by simulating the phase equilibrium of the chemical system in Li-S batteries using HSC Chemistry software. We hypothesize that the insulating elemental sulfur could be reduced by polysulfides generated on the cathode, after which they are dissolved in the electrolyte and participate in cathode reactions. This phase transfer effect of sulfur in Li-S batteries revealed a chemical equilibrium in the electrolyte of the Li-S battery, which may form a chemical path embedded into the discharge process of Li-S batteries.

Capacity Fade Analysis of Sulfur Cathodes in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are receiving ever-increasing attention due to their high theoretical energy density and inexpensive raw sulfur materials. However, their rapid capacity fade has been one of the key barriers for their further improvement. It is well accepted that the major degradation mechanisms of S-cathodes include low electrical conductivity of S and sulfides, precipitation of nonconductive Li2S2 and Li2S, and poly-shuttle effects. To determine these degradation factors, a comprehensive study of sulfur cathodes with different amounts of electrolytes is presented here. A survey of the fundamentals of Li-S chemistry with respect to capacity fade is first conducted; then, the parameters obtained through electrochemical performance and characterization are used to determine the key causes of capacity fade in Li-S batteries. It is confirmed that the formation and accumulation of nonconductive Li2S2/Li2S films on sulfur cathode surfaces are the major parameters contributing to the rapid capacity fade of Li-S batteries.
