Electrified ammonia production as a commodity and energy storage medium to connect the food, energy, and trade sectors.

ABSTRACT: Ammonia, a versatile chemical that is distributed and traded widely, can be used as an energy storage medium. We carried out detailed analyses on the potential economic risks and benefits of using power-to-ammonia in three use pathways in the food, energy, and trade sectors, i.e., local sales, energy storage, and export under different levelized cost of ammonia (LCOA) scenarios. The base-case LCOA is lower than the market price, making local sales and export pathways profitable, and yet the energy storage pathway is at a loss unless ammonia-to-power efficiency is significantly improved. Four different combined use scenarios were also studied. Results show that under the base case LCOA and market assumptions, the combined use pathway leads to a loss of US$30 million. But a combined use pathway can become more profitable when there are higher predicted ammonia prices, larger export demand for low-carbon ammonia, and technology development.

Trade policy announcements can increase price volatility in global food commodity markets.

Project description:Many countries use trade policy to insulate their domestic markets from price volatility. However, there is a widespread concern that such policies-particularly export restrictions-may amplify global price volatility, adversely affecting other countries. Here, using an original dataset on trade policy announcements on wheat and maize encompassing the food price crises of 2007-2008 and 2010-2011, we show that the announcement of trade policy changes can increase global price volatility. This effect applies not only to export restrictions but also to import liberalization measures and is most pronounced when markets are tight (stocks are low). Policymakers should work towards increasing stock levels to mitigate price volatility effects of trade policy changes. When markets are tight, export restrictions and import liberalizations should be avoided.

Trade war effects: evidence from sectors of energy and resources in Africa.

Project description:The US government proposes to impose tariffs on up to $50 billion of Chinese imports leading to significant concerns over the Trade War between the US and China. The article evaluates and examines the market responses of companies in both countries, depending on their direct and indirect exposures to US-China trade. Moreover, this paper fills the gap in literature about deglobalization in Energy and Resources Sectors in Africa. This paper proves the idea that US companies that are more dependent on exports and imports from China have lower stock and bond returns, and, at the same time, higher default risks in the short time aspect. The article found Trade War effects in energy and resources companies in Africa in the last years: on ownership rank, on credit country rank, on default risks and on their profitability. The paper also demonstrates that companies' indirect exposure to US-China trade through domestic input-output links affects their responses to news on the subject matter. These findings suggest that the state of US-China trade of energy and resources is much more complex than the simplistic view of global trade that was in the beginning of Trade War with China. As a result of the Trade War, the real changes in stock prices of China companies (-0.07%) in energy and resource sectors is less than the same changes in US companies in Africa (-0.32%) in 2019. Also, the probability of default of Chinese companies (average default probability changed in -0.08%) in energy and resource sectors changed less than the same rank of US companies in Africa (average default probability changed by -0.84%).

Network structure impacts global commodity trade growth and resilience.

Project description:Global commodity trade networks are critical to our collective sustainable development. Their increasing interconnectedness pose two practical questions: (i) Do the current network configurations support their further growth? (ii) How resilient are these networks to economic shocks? We analyze the data of global commodity trade flows from 1996 to 2012 to evaluate the relationship between structural properties of the global commodity trade networks and (a) their dynamic growth, as well as (b) the resilience of their growth with respect to the 2009 global economic shock. Specifically, we explore the role of network efficiency and redundancy using the information theory-based network flow analysis. We find that, while network efficiency is positively correlated with growth, highly efficient systems appear to be less resilient, losing more and gaining less growth following an economic shock. While all examined networks are rather redundant, we find that network redundancy does not hinder their growth. Moreover, systems exhibiting higher levels of redundancy lose less and gain more growth following an economic shock. We suggest that a strategy to support making global trade networks more efficient via, e.g., preferential trade agreements and higher specialization, can promote their further growth; while a strategy to increase the global trade networks' redundancy via e.g., more abundant free-trade agreements, can improve their resilience to global economic shocks.

Gaussian Bayesian network model of healthcare, food and energy sectors in the pandemic: Turkiye case.

Project description:Healthcare, food, and energy are the basic needs of life in the globalizing world. Humankind's quest to maintain a healthy life and find ways to meet its needs has continued since its existence. The causal relations between the healthcare, food, and energy sectors are explored using data from the pandemic when COVID-19 was a global risk, and human health sustainability underwent a complicated process. It aims to examine the interaction between the healthcare, food, and energy sectors and model the causal relationship within the framework of probabilistic dependencies. For this purpose, the relationships between these sectors during the pandemic are modeled via Bayesian Networks (BNs). This highly successful inference method makes the complex structure of causal relationships graphically understandable. The data consists of stock returns at the end of the business day between March 11, 2020, when the pandemic was declared, and December 26, 2022. Data on 13 stocks actively traded on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (BIST) during the 700 days were obtained from tr.investing.com. Causal modeling uses Gaussian Bayesian Networks (GBNs) for continuous variables. To make the inferences drawn from the data more successful and minimize the loss of information, the GBN model is built with continuous variables. The posterior Probability Density Functions (PDFs) of the stocks in the network are constructed over the structure of the Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) of the BNs, and inferences are made by querying possible cases (tips). Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations are performed with the posterior PDFs, and measures of the central tendency of the stocks are calculated. GBNs are used to generate daily return estimates for ULKER with the lowest MSE (1.06e-03) and RMSE (3.22e-02) values and ULUUN with the highest MSE (3.43e-03) and RMSE (5.83e-02) values.

Chemical looping of metal nitride catalysts: low-pressure ammonia synthesis for energy storage.

Project description:The activity of many heterogeneous catalysts is limited by strong correlations between activation energies and adsorption energies of reaction intermediates. Although the reaction is thermodynamically favourable at ambient temperature and pressure, the catalytic synthesis of ammonia (NH3), a fertilizer and chemical fuel, from N2 and H2 requires some of the most extreme conditions of the chemical industry. We demonstrate how ammonia can be produced at ambient pressure from air, water, and concentrated sunlight as renewable source of process heat via nitrogen reduction with a looped metal nitride, followed by separate hydrogenation of the lattice nitrogen into ammonia. Separating ammonia synthesis into two reaction steps introduces an additional degree of freedom when designing catalysts with desirable activation and adsorption energies. We discuss the hydrogenation of alkali and alkaline earth metal nitrides and the reduction of transition metal nitrides to outline a promoting role of lattice hydrogen in ammonia evolution. This is rationalized via electronic structure calculations with the activity of nitrogen vacancies controlling the redox-intercalation of hydrogen and the formation and hydrogenation of adsorbed nitrogen species. The predicted trends are confirmed experimentally with evolution of 56.3, 80.7, and 128 μmol NH3 per mol metal per min at 1 bar and above 550 °C via reduction of Mn6N2.58 to Mn4N and hydrogenation of Ca3N2 and Sr2N to Ca2NH and SrH2, respectively.

Mapping food surveillance chains through different sectors.

Project description:European countries are investing in strengthening disease surveillance from a One Health (OH) perspective. During the MATRIX project, in the context of the One Health European Joint Programme, existing surveillance chains across the sectors of animal health, food safety, and public health have been investigated through questionnaires. Provided information has then been selected to be displayed in a single slide using an implemented mapping template. Two real-life scenarios are presented as case studies: the surveillance activities in place in France for Salmonella in the pork meat food chain, and in Norway for Listeria monocytogenes in the dairy food chain. The results collected through the questionnaires and the lessons learnt during the mapping process are reported, to share the advantages and drawbacks of the methodology. Moreover, the presented template could be adjusted and applied to different contexts. Mapping the components of existing disease surveillance systems is a fundamental step in understanding the relationships between its components, and subsequently facilitating their collaboration and integration under a OH approach.

Origins of food crops connect countries worldwide

Project description:Research into the origins of food plants has led to the recognition that specific geographical regions around the world have been of particular importance to the development of agricultural crops. Yet the relative contributions of these different regions in the context of current food systems have not been quantified. Here we determine the origins (‘primary regions of diversity’) of the crops comprising the food supplies and agricultural production of countries worldwide. We estimate the degree to which countries use crops from regions of diversity other than their own (‘foreign crops’), and quantify changes in this usage over the past 50 years. Countries are highly interconnected with regard to primary regions of diversity of the crops they cultivate and/or consume. Foreign crops are extensively used in food supplies (68.7% of national food supplies as a global mean are derived from foreign crops) and production systems (69.3% of crops grown are foreign). Foreign crop usage has increased significantly over the past 50 years, including in countries with high indigenous crop diversity. The results provide a novel perspective on the ongoing globalization of food systems worldwide, and bolster evidence for the importance of international collaboration on genetic resource conservation and exchange.

Cultivation of ammonia-oxidising archaea on solid medium.

Project description:Ammonia-oxidising archaea (AOA) are environmentally important microorganisms involved in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen. Routine cultivation of AOA is exclusively performed in liquid cultures and reports on their growth on solid medium are scarce. The ability to grow AOA on solid medium would be beneficial for not only the purification of enrichment cultures but also for developing genetic tools. The aim of this study was to develop a reliable method for growing individual colonies from AOA cultures on solid medium. Three phylogenetically distinct AOA strains were tested: 'Candidatus Nitrosocosmicus franklandus C13', Nitrososphaera viennensis EN76 and 'Candidatus Nitrosotalea sinensis Nd2'. Of the gelling agents tested, agar and Bacto-agar severely inhibited growth of all three strains. In contrast, both 'Ca. N. franklandus C13' and N. viennensis EN76 tolerated Phytagel™ while the acidophilic 'Ca. N. sinensis Nd2' was completely inhibited. Based on these observations, we developed a Liquid-Solid (LS) method that involves immobilising cells in Phytagel™ and overlaying with liquid medium. This approach resulted in the development of visible distinct colonies from 'Ca. N. franklandus C13' and N. viennensis EN76 cultures and lays the groundwork for the genetic manipulation of this group of microorganisms.

Overcoming Energy Storage-Loss Trade-Offs in Polymer Dielectrics Through the Synergistic Tuning of Electronic Effects in π-Conjugated Polystyrenes.

Project description:Achieving high-performance dielectric materials remains a significant challenge due to the inherent trade-offs between high energy storage density and low energy loss. A central difficulty lies in identifying a suitable dipolar unit that can enhance the polarity and dielectric constant of the material while effectively suppressing the high energy losses associated with polarization relaxation, charge injection, and conduction. To address this, a novel strategy is proposed that introduces electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on the benzene ring of polystyrene-based polymers, creating bulky dipole groups that are resistant to reorientation under an electric field. This approach mitigates relaxation losses associated with dipole reorientation and manipulates the band structure via substituent modification to suppress conduction losses. Additionally, the deformation of the π-electron cloud under an electric field enhances the dielectric constant and energy storage density. Ultimately, the optimized chlorostyrene-methyl methacrylate (MMA) copolymer exhibits an 85% discharge efficiency and an energy storage density of 18.3 J cm- 3, nearly three times that of styrene-based copolymers under the same conditions. This study introduces a new approach for designing high-energy density, low-loss polymer dielectric materials by precisely controlling electron-donating and electron-withdrawing effects to modulate the distribution of π-conjugated electron clouds.

ZmICE1a regulates the defence–storage trade-off in maize endosperm [RNA-seq]

Project description:The endosperm of cereal grains feeds the entire world as major food supply, however little is known for its defense responses during endosperm development. Inducer of CBF Expression 1 (ICE1) is a known regulator of cold tolerance in plants. ICE1 has a monocot-specific homologue that is preferentially expressed in cereal grains but with an unclear regulatory function. Here, we characterized the function of monocot-specific ZmICE1 (ZmICE1a) in maize (Zea mays) kernel. mRNA in situ hybridization (ISH) revealed that ZmICE1a is predominantly expressed in the peripheral endosperm (AL, SAL, and BETL). Loss-of-function of ZmICE1a reduced starch content and kernel weight. RNA-seq analysis revealed contradicted expression patterns between starch synthesis genes and genes involved in defense and phytohormone synthesis in zmice1a developing endosperm. Coupled with CUT&Tag-seq analysis, we found that ZmICE1a positively regulates genes in starch synthesis, while negatively regulates genes in AL-specific defense and the synthesis of IAA and JA. Explant assays revealed that exogenous IAA or JA induces the expression of numerous defense genes. mRNA ISH assays revealed that the defense genes induced by IAA and JA, exhibit distinct spatial specific expression in BETL and SAL, respectively. Moreover, we dissected a JA-ZmJAZ9-ZmICE1a-MPI signaling axis involved in JA-mediated defense regulation. Overall, our study revealed ZmICE1a as a key regulatory for endosperm defense responses, and coordinates defense-storage tradeoffs during endosperm development.
