Mechanochemically-Assisted Synthesis of Polyimides.

ABSTRACT: Polyimides were obtained in 99 % yield in under 1 h through the "beat and heat" approach, involving solvent-free vibrational ball milling and a thermal treatment step. The influence of a plethora of additives was explored, such as Lewis acids, Lewis bases, and dehydrating agents, and the mechanochemical reaction was identified to run via a polyamic acid intermediate. The protocol was adopted to a range of substrates inaccessible through solution-based processes, including perylene tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and melamine. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations were conducted to identify the water removal as the crucial step in the reaction mechanism. The presented method is substantially faster and more versatile than the solution-based process.

Mechanochemically Assisted Synthesis of Hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile.

Project description:1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile (HAT CN) was synthesized mechanochemically at room temperature. The coupling of hexaketocyclohexane and diaminomaleonitrile was conducted in 10 min by vibratory ball milling. The effects of milling parameters, acids, dehydrating agents, and liquid-assisted grinding were rationalized. With 67%, the yield of this mechanochemical approach exceeds that of state-of-the-art wet-chemical syntheses while being superior with respect to time-, resource-, and energy-efficiency as quantified via green metrics.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of high thermal stability and colourless polyimides containing pyridine.

Project description:A novel aromatic diamine containing pyridyl side group, 4-pyridine-4,4-bis(3,5-dimethyl-5-aminophenyl)methane (PyDPM), was successfully synthesized via electrophilic substitution reaction. The polyimides (PIs) containing pyridine were obtained via the microwave-assisted one-step polycondensation of the PyDPM with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylether tetracarboxylic dianhydride (ODPA) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Contrarily to the reported similar PIs, these PIs exhibit much higher thermal stability or heat resistance, i.e. high glass transition temperatures (T gs) in the range of 358-473°C, and the decomposition temperatures at 5% weight loss over 476°C under nitrogen. They can afford flexible and strong films with tensile strength of 82.1-93.3 MPa, elongation at break of 3.7%-15.2%, and Young's modulus of 3.3-3.8 GPa. Furthermore, The PI films exhibit good optical transparency with the cut-off wavelength at 313-366 nm and transmittance higher than 73% at 450 nm. The excellent thermal and optical transmittance can be attributed to synthesis method and the introduction of pyridine rings and ortho-methyl groups. The inherent viscosities of PIs via one-step method were found to be 0.58-1.12 dl g-1 in DMAc, much higher than those via two-step method. These results indicate these PIs could be potential candidates for optical substrates of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Mechanochemically-assisted solvent-free and template-free synthesis of zeolites ZSM-5 and mordenite.

Project description:Aluminosilicate-based zeolite materials, such as ZSM-5 and mordenite, are well-studied as catalysts. Typical approaches to synthesize these zeolites require either templates or seeds to direct ordered crystal growth and both of these are expensive and add to the complexity of zeolite synthesis. In this paper, we describe a solvent-free and template-free method to synthesize crystalline ZSM-5 and mordenite zeolites without any added seed crystals. Key to the success of this approach is a mechanochemical precursor pre-reaction step. High-energy ball-milling is used to initiate a solid-state metathesis (exchange) reaction between Na2SiO3 and Al2(SO4)3 reagents, forming crystalline Na2SO4 and well-mixed aluminosilicate precursor. The solid precursor mixture is thermally converted to crystalline ZSM-5 or mordenite at moderate 180 °C temperatures without solvents or an organic amine structure directing template. Variations in Si/Al ratios in the precursor mixture and additions of solid NaOH to the mechanochemical reaction were found to influence the subsequent growth of either crystalline ZSM-5 or mordenite zeolites. The crystalline zeolites from this solvent-free and template free method have high ∼300 m2 g-1 surface areas directly from the synthesis without requiring high-temperature calcination. These materials are also comparably active to their commercial counterparts in cellulose and glucose biomass catalytic conversion to hydroxymethylfurfural.

Mechanochemically assisted morphing of shape shifting polymers.

Project description:Morphing in creatures has inspired various synthetic polymer materials that are capable of shape shifting. The morphing of polymers generally relies on stimuli-active (typically heat and light active) units that fix the shape after a mechanical load-based shape programming. Herein, we report a strategy that uses a mechanochemically active 2,2'-bis(2-phenylindan-1,3-dione) (BPID) mechanophore as a switching unit for mechanochemical morphing. The mechanical load on the polymer triggers the dissociation of the BPID moiety into stable 2-phenylindan-1,3-dione (PID) radicals, whose subsequent spontaneous dimerization regenerates BPID and fixes the temporary shapes that can be effectively recovered to the permanent shapes by heating. A greater extent of BPID activation, through a higher BPID content or mechanical load, leads to higher mechanochemical shape fixity. By contrast, a relatively mechanochemically less active hexaarylbiimidazole (HABI) mechanophore shows a lower fixing efficiency when subjected to the same programing conditions. Another control system without a mechanophore shows a low fixing efficiency comparable to the HABI system. Additionally, the introduction of the BPID moiety also manifests remarkable mechanochromic behavior during the shape programing process, offering a visualizable indicator for the pre-evaluation of morphing efficiency. Unlike conventional mechanical mechanisms that simultaneously induce morphing, such as strain-induced plastic deformation or crystallization, our mechanochemical method allows for shape programming after the mechanical treatment. Our concept has potential for the design of mechanochemically programmable and mechanoresponsive shape shifting polymers.

Mechanochemically assisted hydrolysis in the ADOR process.

Project description:The ADOR (Assembly-Disassembly-Organisation-Reassembly) process for zeolites has been shown to produce a number of previously unknown frameworks inaccessible through conventional synthesis methods. Here, we present successful mechanochemically assisted hydrolysis of germanosilicate zeolite UTL leading to ADOR products under mild conditions, low amounts of solvent and in short reaction times. The expansion of zeolite synthesis into the realm of mechanochemistry opens up feasible pathways regarding the production of these materials, especially for industrial purposes, as well as an exciting application for economical enrichment of materials with the low natural abundance NMR-active isotope of oxygen, 17O. The results from mechanochemically assisted hydrolysis differ from those seen in the traditional ADOR approach: differences that can be attributed to a change in solvent availability.

Mechanochemically-Assisted Passerini Reactions: A Practical and Convenient Method for the Synthesis of Novel α-Acyloxycarboxamide Derivatives.

Project description:A carboxylic acid, an aldehyde, and an isonitrile were combined in a single step (Passerini reaction) under mechanochemical activation to produce several α-acyloxycarboxamide derivatives in high to excellent yields within 15 min of milling. Mechanochemistry, when combined with the diversity provided by multicomponent reactions, enables the efficient synthesis of the target compounds, with great atom economy, shorter reaction times, and experimental simplicity. The method allows for the rapid production of a vast library of complex compounds from a limited number of substrates.

Synthesis and Properties of Cyclopentyl Cardo-Type Polyimides Based on Dicyclopentadiene.

Project description:A crucial polymer intermediate, 4-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclopentyl]-phenol (bisphenol CP), was developed from dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), a key byproduct of the C5 fraction in petrochemicals. On the basis of bisphenol CP, a diamine, 4,4'-((cyclopentane-1,1-diylbis(4,1-phenylene))bis(oxy))-dianiline (cyclopentyl diamine; CPDA) was subsequently obtained through a nucleophilic substitution of bisphenol CP, followed by the hydrogenation process. By using the CPDA diamine, a series of polyimides with cyclopentyl (cardo) units on the backbone were prepared along with a reference polyimide (API-6F) based on 4,4'-(4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(oxy)dianiline (BPAA), and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) for the exploration of structure-properties relationship. Thanks to the presence of cyclopentyl units, this type of cardo polyimides exhibited comparable tensile properties, especially a large elongation (25.4%). It is also worth noting that CPI-6F exhibited better solubility in organic solvents, such as NMP, DMAc, THF, and chloroform, than the other PIs. Gas separation properties were also evaluated for these cardo-type polyimides.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Triphenylamine-Containing Electrochromic Polyimides with Benzimidazole Substituents.

Project description:Two novel electrochromic aromatic polyimides (named as TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI, respectively) with pendent benzimidazole group were synthesized from 1,2-Diphenyl-N,N'-di-4-aminophenyl-5-amino-benzimidazole and 4-Amino-4'-aminophenyl-4″-1-phenyl-benzimidazolyl-phenyl-aniline with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropane) phthalic anhydride (6FDA) via two-step polymerization process, respectively. Then, polyimide films were prepared on ITO-conductive glass by electrostatic spraying, and their electrochromic properties were studied. The results showed that due to the π-π* transitions, the maximum UV-Vis absorption bands of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films were located at about 314 nm and 346 nm, respectively. A pair of reversible redox peaks of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films that were associated with noticeable color changed from original yellow to dark blue and green were observed in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) test. With increasing voltage, new absorption peaks of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films emerged at 755 nm and 762 nm, respectively. The switching/bleaching times of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films were 13 s/16 s and 13.9 s/9.5 s, respectively, showing that these polyimides can be used as novel electrochromic materials.

A facile synthesis of contorted spirobisindane-diamine and its microporous polyimides for gas separation.

Project description:Microporous polyimides (PIM-PIs, KAUST-PIs) and polymers containing Tröger's base (TB) derivatives with improved permeability and selectivity have great importance for separation of environmental gas pairs. Despite the tremendous progress in this field, facile synthesis of microporous polymers at the industrial scale via designing new monomers is still lacking. In this study, a new potential approach for large scale synthesis of spirobisindane diamine (DAS) (3) has been reported from commercially available 5,5',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobisindane (TTSBI) and 3,4-difluoronitrobenzene. A series of DAS diamine based microporous polyimides were also synthesized. The resulting polymer membranes showed high mechanical and thermal properties with tunable gas separation performance.

Synthesis of Highly Gas-Permeable Polyimides of Intrinsic Microporosity Derived from 1,3,6,8-Tetramethyl-2,7-diaminotriptycene.

Project description:A simple synthetic route to a novel sterically hindered triptycene-based diamine, 1,3,6,8-tetramethyl-2,7-diaminotriptycene (TMDAT), and its use in the preparation of high molecular weight polyimides of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-PIs) are reported. The organosoluble TMDAT-derived polyimides displayed high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas ranging between 610 and 850 m2 g-1 and demonstrated excellent thermal stability of up to 510 °C. Introduction of the rigid three-dimensional paddlewheel triptycene framework and the tetramethyl-induced restriction of the imide bond rotation resulted in highly permeable polyimides with moderate gas-pair selectivity. The best performing polyimide made from TMDAT and a triptycene-based dianhydride showed gas transport properties located between the 2008 and 2015 polymer permeability/selectivity trade-off curves with H2 and O2 permeabilities of 2858 and 575 barrer combined with H2/N2 and O2/N2 selectivities of 24 and 4.8, respectively, after 200 days of physical aging.
