One-Pot Synthesis of Melt-Processable Supramolecular Soft Actuators.

ABSTRACT: The application of reprocessable and reprogrammable soft actuators is limited by the synthetic strategies, 3D-shaping capabilities, and small deformations. In this work, melt-processable supramolecular soft actuators based on segmented copolymers containing thiourethane and liquid crystal segments have been prepared via sequential thiol addition reactions in a one-pot approach using commercially available building blocks. The actuators demonstrated immediate, reversible response and weightlifting capabilities with large deformations up to 32 %. Through exploiting the supramolecular cross-links, the material could be recycled and reprogrammed into 3D actuators and welded into an actuator assembly with different deformation modes. Our work offers a one-pot synthesis and straightforward melt-processable approach to prepare supramolecular soft actuators with large deformations that can be reprocessed and reprogrammed into arbitrary 3D shapes.

Direct Ink Writing of Recyclable Supramolecular Soft Actuators.

Project description:Direct ink writing (DIW) of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) has rapidly paved its way into the field of soft actuators and other stimuli-responsive devices. However, currently used LCE systems for DIW require postprinting (photo)polymerization, thereby forming a covalent network, making the process time-consuming and the material nonrecyclable. In this work, a DIW approach is developed for printing a supramolecular poly(thio)urethane LCE to overcome these drawbacks of permanent cross-linking. The thermo-reversible nature of the supramolecular cross-links enables the interplay between melt-processable behavior required for extrusion and formation of the network to fix the alignment. After printing, the actuators demonstrated a reversible contraction of 12.7% or bending and curling motions when printed on a passive substrate. The thermoplastic ink enables recyclability, as shown by cutting and printing the actuators five times. However, the actuation performance diminishes. This work highlights the potential of supramolecular LCE inks for DIW soft circular actuators and other devices.

One-Pot Synthesis of Oxidation-Sensitive Supramolecular Gels and Vesicles.

Project description:Polypeptide-based nanoparticles offer unique advantages from a nanomedicine perspective such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and stimuli-responsive properties to (patho)physiological conditions. Conventionally, self-assembled polypeptide nanostructures are prepared by first synthesizing their constituent amphiphilic polypeptides followed by postpolymerization self-assembly. Herein, we describe the one-pot synthesis of oxidation-sensitive supramolecular micelles and vesicles. This was achieved by polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) of the N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) precursor of methionine using poly(ethylene oxide) as a stabilizing and hydrophilic block in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). By adjusting the hydrophobic block length and concentration, we obtained a range of morphologies from spherical to wormlike micelles, to vesicles. Remarkably, the secondary structure of polypeptides greatly influenced the final morphology of the assemblies. Surprisingly, wormlike micellar morphologies were obtained for a wide range of methionine block lengths and solid contents, with spherical micelles restricted to very short hydrophobic lengths. Wormlike micelles further assembled into oxidation-sensitive, self-standing gels in the reaction pot. Both vesicles and wormlike micelles obtained using this method demonstrated to degrade under controlled oxidant conditions, which would expand their biomedical applications such as in sustained drug release or as cellular scaffolds in tissue engineering.

Besides catalysis, the pot-economy concepts presented herein are also applicable to organometallic and organic reaction methods in general.

One-pot synthesis of polyrotaxanes via acyclic diene metathesis polymerization of supramolecular monomers.

Project description:A one-pot synthesis of polyrotaxanes has been developed. The method employs a supramolecular monomer comprising a polymerizable ammonium salt and crown ether, in combination with dynamic ADMet polymerization. Ultimately, highly efficient complexation, polymerization, and end-capping were accomplished in a single operation to yield polyrotaxanes with M(w) up to 19.3 kDa and >80% of the repeat units being complexed.

Thermoelectric Properties of One-Pot Hydrothermally Synthesized Solution-Processable PEDOT:PSS/MWCNT Composite Materials.

Project description:The combination of organic and inorganic materials has been considered an effective solution for achieving ambient thermoelectric energy harvesting and has been developing rapidly. Here, PEDOT:PSS/MWCNT (PPM) composite hydrogels were synthesized using the self-assembled gelation process of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and the interaction between PEDOT:PSS and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) without the addition of any surfactant. After immersion in dimethyl sulfoxide and freeze-drying, the hydrogel is easily dispersed in water and used as a direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing ink. At room temperature, the PPM-20 printed film with 20 wt% MWCNT solids achieved a maximum power factor of 7.37 μW m-1 K-2 and maintained stable thermoelectric properties during repeated bending cycles. On this basis, a thermoelectric generator (TEG) consisting of five legs was printed, which could be produced to generate an open circuit voltage of 6.4 mV and a maximum output power of 40.48 nW at a temperature gradient of 50 K, confirming its great potential for application in high-performance flexible organic/inorganic thermoelectric materials.

Soft material for soft actuators.

Project description:Inspired by natural muscle, a key challenge in soft robotics is to develop self-contained electrically driven soft actuators with high strain density. Various characteristics of existing technologies, such as the high voltages required to trigger electroactive polymers ( > 1KV), low strain ( < 10%) of shape memory alloys and the need for external compressors and pressure-regulating components for hydraulic or pneumatic fluidicelastomer actuators, limit their practicality for untethered applications. Here we show a single self-contained soft robust composite material that combines the elastic properties of a polymeric matrix and the extreme volume change accompanying liquid-vapor transition. The material combines a high strain (up to 900%) and correspondingly high stress (up to 1.3 MPa) with low density (0.84 g cm-3). Along with its extremely low cost (about 3 cent per gram), simplicity of fabrication and environment-friendliness, these properties could enable new kinds of electrically driven entirely soft robots.The development of self-contained electrically driven soft actuators with high strain density is difficult. Here the authors show a single self-contained soft robust composite material that combines the elastic properties of a polymeric matrix and the extreme volume change accompanying liquid vapour transition.

Widely used in perfumery, (-)-Ambrox is an important ingredient due to its unique scent and excellent fixative function. An environmentally friendly and practical preparation of (-)-Ambrox is still unavailable at present although a lot of attention has been paid to this hot research topic for many years. A one-pot synthesis of (-)-Ambrox was studied starting from (-)-sclareol through oxidation with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a quaternary ammonium phosphomolybdate catalyst {[C5H5NC16H33] [H2PMo12O40]}, which gave the product a 20% overall yield.

Soft electromagnetic actuators.

Project description:Rigid electromagnetic actuators serve our society in a myriad of ways for more than 200 years. However, their bulky nature restricts close collaboration with humans. Here, we introduce soft electromagnetic actuators (SEMAs) by replacing solid metal coils with liquid-metal channels embedded in elastomeric shells. We demonstrate human-friendly, simple, stretchable, fast, durable, and programmable centimeter-scale SEMAs that drive a soft shark, interact with everyday objects, or rapidly mix a dye with water. A multicoil flower SEMA with individually controlled petals blooms or closes within tens of milliseconds, and a cubic SEMA performs programmed, arbitrary motion sequences. We develop a numerical model supporting design and opening potential routes toward miniaturization, reduction of power consumption, and increase in mechanical efficiency. SEMAs are electrically controlled shape-morphing systems that are potentially empowering future applications from soft grippers to minimally invasive medicine.

β-Cyclodextrin: a green supramolecular catalyst assisted eco-friendly one-pot three-component synthesis of biologically active substituted pyrrolidine-2-one.

Project description:A green, novel and eco-efficient synthetic route towards the synthesis of highly substituted bio-active pyrrolidine-2-one derivatives was demonstrated using β-cyclodextrin, a water-soluble supramolecular solid as a green and eco-benign catalyst at room temperature under water-ethanol solvent medium. The exploration of the green catalyst β-cyclodextrin for the metal-free one-pot three-component synthesis of a wide range of highly functionalized bio-active heterocyclic pyrrolidine-2-one moieties from easily available aldehydes and amines explains the superiority and uniqueness of this protocol.

Project description:A new one pot assembly of highly functionalized benzo[a]phenazinone fused chromene/bicyclic scaffolds via a domino Knoevenagel intramolecular hetero-Diels-Alder (IMHDA) strategy using a solid state melt reaction (SSMR) of 2-hydroxynaphthalene 1,4-dione, o-phenylenediamine, O-allyl salicylaldehyde/O-vinyl salicylaldehyde derivatives is reported. The formation of five new bonds (two C-C bonds and three C-O bonds), three six-membered rings, and three stereogenic centers in a one-pot manner is very attractive. Ease of reaction with short time, good yields with water as the only byproduct and work up free procedure are some of the excellent features of the present protocol.
