Plant community impact on productivity: Trait diversity or key(stone) species effects?

ABSTRACT: Outside controlled experimental plots, the impact of community attributes on primary productivity has rarely been compared to that of individual species. Here, we identified plant species of high importance for productivity (key species) in >29,000 diverse grassland communities in the European Alps, and compared their effects with those of community-level measures of functional composition (weighted means, variances, skewness and kurtosis). After accounting for the environment, the five most important key species jointly explained more deviance of productivity than any measure of functional composition alone. Key species were generally tall with high specific leaf areas. By dividing the observations according to distinct habitats, the explanatory power of key species and functional composition increased and key-species plant types and functional composition-productivity relationships varied systematically, presumably because of changing interactions and trade-offs between traits. Our results advocate for a careful consideration of species' individual effects on ecosystem functioning in complement to community-level measures.

Project description:IntroductionTajikistan is a typical mountainous country covered by different mountain grasslands that are important pasture resources. Recently, grassland degradation has become widespread due to climate change and human activities and fertilization has been used to improve grassland production. However, fertilizer inputs can substantially alter species diversity, but it is uncl\ear how productivity and species diversity respond to nutrient enrichment in the mountain meadows of Tajikistan.MethodsTherefore, a 5-year (2018-2022) continuous in-situ mineral fertilizer experiment was conducted to examine the effects of three nitrogen (N) levels (0, 30, and 90 kg N ha-1 year-1), two phosphorus (P) levels (0 and 30 kg P ha-1 year-1), and their combinations on above-ground biomass (AGB) and species diversity in a mountain meadow grassland in Ziddi, Varzob region, Tajikistan. Five species diversity metrics-Margalef's species richness (Dma), the Shannon-Wiener index (H), the Simpson index (C), Pielou's equitability index (Epi), and the Evar Species Evenness index (Evar)-were used to measure species diversity.Results and discussionsThe results indicated that the addition of different N and P amounts and their various combinations considerably increased both total and dominant species AGB, with the highest increase occurring in the N90P30 (90 kg N ha-1 year-1 combined with 30 kg P ha-1 year-1) treatment in 2022; during the experiment, the importance value of Prangos pabularia (dominant species) first decreased and then increased, but its dominant status did not change or fluctuate among the years. Furthermore, N, P, and their different combinations had no significant effect on species diversity (Dma, H, C, Epi, and Evar). All the species diversity indexes fluctuated among years, but there was no interaction with mineral fertilizer addition. Total AGB had a negative relationship with species diversity and low concentration N fertilizer addition (N30; P30) strengthened this negative trend. However, this trend decreased under the high N fertilizer condition (N90P30). Overall, nutrient addition to the natural mountain grassland of the Varzob region improved AGB, which meant that there was more forage for local animals. Mineral fertilizers had no significant effect on species diversity, but may enhance P. pabularia dominance in the future, which will help maintain the stability of the plant community and improve the quality of the forage because P. pabularia is an excellent and important winter fodder. Our study suggests that scientific nutrient management could effectively promote grassland production, conserve plant variety, and regenerate degraded grassland, which will counteract the desertification process in northwest Tajikistan mountain meadows.

Project description:Diversity-productivity relationships can differ between forests dominated by different mycorrhizal types and be modulated by specialist and generalist pathogens. However, little is known about how these factors interact to modulate biodiversity effects. We addressed this knowledge gap with a 2-year experiment combining the manipulation of plant richness (one, two, four, eight species) and mycorrhizal tree type (arbuscular mycorrhizal [AM] tree-dominated; ecto-mycorrhizal [ECM] tree-dominated) with fungicide application for leaf pathogens (added or control). Biodiversity effects were quantified for community productivity and its two components (shoots and roots). We observed nonlinear diversity-productivity relationships, with the productivity of ECM tree-dominated communities increasing at low to intermediate diversity and declining at the highest species richness. Foliar fungicide application reduced positive complementarity effects and increased productivity in both ECM tree monocultures as well as eight-species mixtures. This finding suggests that the dilution effects of specialized pathogens may dominate at low diversity, while the spillover effects of generalist pathogens may become dominant at high diversity, resulting in unimodal diversity-productivity relationships. In AM tree-dominated communities, aboveground productivity strongly increased in response to leaf pathogen suppression in eight-species mixtures, and the release from leaf pathogens benefited most of the species that were most productive in fungicide-treated monocultures. This agrees with the prediction that spillover effects of generalist pathogens in diverse plant communities could differentially suppress highly productive species due to the trade-off between growth and defense. In addition, positive biodiversity effects on root production were significantly stronger in AM tree- than ECM tree-dominated communities. Our results demonstrate that relationships between plant diversity and productivity can be nonlinear due to the combined effects of specialized and generalized plant-fungal interactions, depend on plant mycorrhizal type, and differ between aboveground and belowground compartments.
